AfDB GEARS UP FOR KEY ROLE IN POST-2015 DEVELOPMENT AGENDA

A high-level African Development Bank (AfDB) delegation led by its new President, Akinwumi Adesina, will ensure that Africa’s voice is heard at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in New York from September 25-27.

Building on President Adesina’s five-point vision, to “Light up and Power Africa. Feed Africa. Integrate Africa. Industrialize Africa. Improve quality of life for the people of Africa”, the Bank commits to play a catalytic role to mobilise funds for the Social Development Goals (SDGs).

The post-2015 agenda provides a new global framework for countries to better focus, coordinate and integrate their efforts as they work towards sustainable development, while eradicating poverty in all its forms. The new 17 SDGs are universal set of goals, targets and indicators that UN Member States are expected to use to frame their national development plans and policies over the next 15 years. The SDGs follow, and expand on, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which were agreed by governments in 2000, and which are due to expire at the end of this year.

ECOBANK FOUNDATION SUPPORTS LONGSTANDING PARTNERSHIP WITH WACP AND RCP LONDON TO REDUCE IMPACT OF HIV, TUBERCULOSIS AND MALARIA

The Ecobank Foundation, along with two of its partners, the West African College of Physicians and the Royal College of Physicians (London) today launched the second year of a strategic partnership to reduce the impact of HIV, tuberculosis and malaria.

The Millennium Development Goal 6 Partnership for African Clinical Training, also known by the acronym ‘M-PACT,’ is a three-year project sponsored by the Ecobank Foundation, and managed by the West African College of Physicians together with the Royal College of Physicians, London.

Through helping to build local capacity, the project supports member countries of the West African College of Physicians in tackling HIV, tuberculosis and malaria. In the first year of the partnership, the project delivered three clinical training courses, one each in Nigeria, Ghana and Senegal. The cities were Ibadan, Accra and Dakar, respectively. The project trained 94 doctors in total, while two ‘Doctors as Educators’ courses were organised in Ibadan and Accra, aimed at raising the skills of local trainers.

WORLD SET TO 'FINISH THE JOB' OF ENDING POVERTY IN THE NEXT 15 YEARS

The UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals are built
around the mantra, ‘leave no one behind’.

From September 25-27, world leaders meet at the United Nations General Assembly in New York to adopt a new development plan of action for ending poverty, dubbed the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The SDGs — an ambitious set of 17 goals and 169 targets — are expected to build on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which were established in 2,000 and expire this year.

The eight MDGs (and 21 targets) placed people at the centre, and helped to improve the lives of many around the world. Yet despite the progress made, there are pockets of those that have been left behind, including poor women in rural areas and other vulnerable and marginalised groups.

Consequently, the agenda of the SDGs is to “finish the job and leave no one behind,” over the next 15 years, on three interconnected fronts — ending extreme poverty; fighting inequality and injustice; and fixing climate change.

INTERNET USERS TO PAY FLAT RATE WHEN ROAMING IN EAST AFRICA STATES

Internet charges for mobile phone users roaming across East Africa are set to come down, with the Kenyan regulator pushing for a harmonised rate within the region in a meeting set for this week.

Telecommunications regulators from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan are expected to meet this week in Nairobi to deliberate on the harmonisation process.

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) director general Francis Wangusi said in an interview last week that harmonisation of the charges was part of a wider strategy by the four regional regulators that will also see a common tariff adopted for mobile money transfers and SMS.

HSBC COULD STAY IN UK, HINTS CHAIRMAN DOUGLAS FLINT

HSBC’s chairman has suggested the bank could retain its domicile in the UK, as his bank mulls moving its headquarters back to the Far East.

Douglas Flint warned that he expected the Black Monday stock market crash, which was sparked in China, would be repeated, and that Britain’s regulatory system was better suited to a global banking titan.

“Regulatory regimes reflect their constituents, and most markets outside the UK, US and EU are essentially regional as the banks there are domestic or are subsidiaries of international banks,” he said in a lecture at Cass Business School in London. “There is a common platform of rules under Basel, but the application is domestic.

“London has the biggest concentration of international banks and is one of the two largest financial centres in the world, and the regulatory expertise here reflects that need.”

AfDB PUTS ENERGY ON THE FRONT BURNER OF AFRICA'S DEVELOPMENT

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has placed energy squarely on the front burner of its development agenda, for a continent on which some 645 million, more than half of the population, do not have access to reliable electricity. Africa’s “energy poverty” is a paradox, given that the continent is blessed with vast raw energy resources. A two-day debate on the subject ended in Abidjan today.

AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina believes that Africa’s energy deficit is the continent’s most glaring challenge. He puts it at the top of his five-point agenda for his Presidency: “light up and power Africa; feed Africa; integrate Africa; industrialise Africa and improve quality of life for the people of Africa”.

APPLE SAYS SALES OF NEW iPHONES ARE OFF TO A STRONG START

15 September 2015 - Apple said on Monday that advance orders of its new iPhones were on pace to beat the 10 million units the previous versions logged in their first weekend last year, a feat that analysts attributed to the inclusion of sales from China.

The Chinese debut of the prior models, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, was delayed last year as the company awaited approval from regulators. Many analysts say China is poised to overtake theUnited States as Apple’s biggest market.

Searching for signs of whether Apple can top its 2014 performance, investors were initially encouraged by the company’s remarks but later tempered their enthusiasm. Apple shares were up 0.7% in afternoon trading after rising as much as 2.3% earlier in the session.

Apple did not disclose the specific number of advance orders it received for the new iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. Analysts had expected about 4.5 million for the first 24 hours, compared with 4 million during the first day last year.

Apple began taking preorders on Saturday for the phones, which will begin shipping Sept. 25.

September 12, 2015: Lafarge Tanzania has commissioned a community water project of over Tsh 10 million to the Songwe Viwandani village in Mbeya region. This project consists of a water storage tank and equipment to supply drinking water for this village.

Speaking at the brief ceremony on the site, the Lafarge Tanzania CEO Catherine Langreney said that Lafarge Tanzania was committed to helping the communities get access to clean water by providing long term and sustainable solutions through provision sustainable water sources as a way of giving back to the community.

“Lafarge Tanzania recognizes that water is a basic need and an important catalyst for both economic and social development of the country. Finding sustainable solutions to the problems of our people underscores our commitment to the communities in which we operate” said Langreney adding that clean, accessible water is essential to the health of communities and it is critical to environment and essential for economic prosperity.

According to the survey released by Jovago Tanzania, it shows that since 2011 Smartphone penetration remains popular compared to feature phones, by increasing from 3% in 2011 to 15% in 2015 and is projected to reach 33% by 2018.

But also, Samsung Metro being the most popular brand among the top five handsets, Nokia Lumia 520, Samsung Galaxy SIV, Nokia S60 and iPhone are among the top brands enjoying popularity in the East African market.

Through a series of agreements between the US government and their respective home nations, the Middle Eastern trio — dubbed the ME3 — have increased their presence in the US market.

However, American, United, and Delta Air Lines — the three biggest US airlines, dubbed the US3— allege that ME3's explosive growth and lavish spending are a result of billions of dollars of unfair government subsidies.

Now the US3 wants the federal government to do something about the subsidies, that they say let ME3 encroach on their turf.

DAR INSPIRED TO RECYCLE TRASH INTO HIGH END PRODUCTS

Dar es Salaam residents have been challenged to creatively recycle trash materials and convert them into new materials or products of higher value and quality - which would lead to economic empowerment while giving waste materials a new purpose and most importantly avoiding adding them to landfill.

Sarah Scott, the CEO of Archipelago Productions, organizers of the Msasani Beach Clean Up and Anza Upcycle Fiesta which took place at Msasani Beach in Dar es Salaam over the weekend said during the event that waste products can be turned into treasure and people can make money from it while keeping the environment clean at the same time.

Scott, who has been instrumental in the cleanup of the Msasani beachfront, says there is a lot of trash on this beach that can’t be reused but there are a lot of objects in the streets that can be reused.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) is hosting a High Level Stakeholder Consultative Meeting on the theme “Towards a New Deal on Energy for Africa”, at the Bank’s Abidjan headquarters, on September 17-18, 2015, to review the Bank’s energy activities and chart the way for a transformative partnership on energy for Africa.

The event will bring together leaders in the energy sector to craft next steps towards a Transformative Partnership on Energy for Africa to provide a major platform for structured private sector, multilateral and bilateral partnerships and financing to solve Africa’s energy challenge.

The Meeting will also articulate implementation actions to inform the New Deal on Energy for Africa and identify opportunities for scaling up renewable energy on the continent.

READ INTERNATIONAL TO BUILD MORE SECONDARY LIBRARIES IN TANZANIA

AIMING to address the distinct lack of access to educational resources in Tanzanian secondary schools, an international Non Governmental Organization (NGO) READ International, has announced plans to build more than 500 libraries in the country in ten years.

“Though the support from our mutual donors we are planning to build at least 50 libraries every year,” Rob Wilson, the founder of READ International said in Dar es Salaam during the 10th anniversary of READ International.

“In 10 years we have donated 1.4 million books and we have refurbished 72 libraries so far. With more support from different education stakeholders we can achieve even more in the next 10 years. We now want to aim bigger than ever before but that means we'll need support more than ever before to reach the path to sustainable education development in the country,” he said.
