DAR ES SALAAM, 15 September 2015 - Ahead of Jovago’s launch of its hotel booking application this month (September), smart phones are still ruling the market but featured phones are complementing them according to a survey done in East Africa.
According to the survey released by Jovago Tanzania, it shows that since 2011 Smartphone penetration remains popular compared to feature phones, by increasing from 3% in 2011 to 15% in 2015 and is projected to reach 33% by 2018.
But also, Samsung Metro being the most popular brand among the top five handsets, Nokia Lumia 520, Samsung Galaxy SIV, Nokia S60 and iPhone are among the top brands enjoying popularity in the East African market.
Andrea Guzzoni, Country Manager of Jovago Tanzania explained that, “regarding online habits in the region, the survey establishes that 38% of customers use mobile phones to surf the net while 62% use computers, however only 14% of the customers use mobile phones to book their hotel rooms while 86% use computers”.
Regarding mobile payments, Kenya leads the pack in East Africa with 68% of customers paying through their handsets compared to 56% in Tanzania and 50% in Uganda. The EA countries are far ahead in this regard compared to West Africa where the continent’s largest economy, Nigeria has only 13% payments being made through mobile phones while Senegal has 24%.
