In this article, we address the categories of biometric SIM card registration, the necessary documentation required to register SIM cards for each category of registration, recent developments on SIM card registration and penalties for non-compliance.

Categories of biometric SIM card registration

The SCR Regulations provide 10 biometric SIM card registration categories which are; individual, company, company employee, institution, minor, visitor, foreigner, refugee, diplomat, and diplomatic institution. For purposes of this briefing, we will focus on the categories listed below:
  • Individual: An individual must register a SIM card by presenting his or her NIDA ID to the service provider. The service provider shall verify the individual’s fingerprint with NIDA. Verification is done online or electronically and the SIM card shall be registered by the individual’s name.

The following certified copies and information must be availed to the service provider: the company’s Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) certificate, business license, incorporation, compliance or registration certificate and the company representative’s NIDA ID. The company representative’s fingerprint shall then be verified by the service provider with NIDA once for a batch of SIM cards. The SIM cards will be registered in the company’s name. Visitors with visa exemption are required to present only a certified copy of a valid passport. A Visitor’s fingerprint verification shall be conducted by the service provider with NIDA or the Immigration Department. The SIM card shall be registered by the Visitor’s name.
  • Foreigner: A foreigner must present his or her NIDA ID to the service provider and fingerprint verification will be done with NIDA. The SIM card shall then be registered by the Foreigner’s name.

TELCOS ARE HELPING TANZANIA’S ECONOMY BECOME ONE OF THE MOST DYNAMIC IN THE REGION

Recent economic news has shown that there are reasons to be optimistic about the country’s economy. According to the latest estimates by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Tanzanian economy is forecasted to grow at 5.2 per cent this year.

These figures mirror earlier research by The Legatum Institute, a UK-based think tank, which highlighted that the country’s economy has secured its position as one of the fastest growing in East Africa.

The research points to a number of factors which have helped to contribute to the country’s overall growth rate. This includes measures ushered in by the government to help drive cross-sector investment and put the economy on the pathway to industrialisation.

Recent news coverage has reported on a number of these initiatives. This includes the construction of new roads and the upgrade of the Dar es Salaam Port to facilitate the flow of more goods in and out of the country.

COVID-19 IS ACCELERATING THE CHANGING ROLE OF ACCOUNTANTS IN BUSINESS: HERE’S HOW

Even before the current global crisis, businesses were facing a multitude of challenges and opportunities in a rapidly changing environment. A world where customers and society are more demanding, where resources are increasingly constrained, where business models are being disrupted, and where intangible assets represent a growing proportion of the value of an enterprise.

The covid-19 pandemic has only heightened these issues, accelerated the pace of change, and constricted the time to respond. Organizations are having to reconsider their business and operating models to take into account changes in supply chains and working practices, as well as changed customer and stakeholder behaviors, needs and expectations.

And as business evolves, the nature of work and the contributions made by professional accountants must also evolve. The IFAC’s Professional Accountants in Business (PAIB) Advisory Group has been exploring the evolution over the last few years, and it remains high on our agenda.

Unchanged in this period of uncertainty is the opportunity for chief financial officers (CFOs) and their finance teams to enhance their contribution to the business in which they operate. For CFOs in particular, in their roles as co-pilots, they must work in partnership with leadership to make difficult decisions, help navigate the crisis, and facilitate any necessary change to ensure longer-term business resilience.

Less than a year ago, IFAC set out its vision for the CFO and finance function. It highlights many priority areas for accountants to consider as organizations shift their focus from crisis mode to recovery and longer-term strategic considerations.

TANZANIA HAS WHAT IT TAKES TO BE ‘AFRICAN ECONOMIC GIANT’

Tanzanian President John Magufuli waves as he attends a ceremony marking the country’s 58th independence anniversary in 2019.
East Africa’s sleeping giant is finally awakening. Right in the middle of the global Coronavirus pandemic, Tanzania has provided a rare piece of good news — on 1 July 2020, the country achieved its middle-income vision five years ahead of schedule.

As a coastal economy bordering eight countries, six of which are nearly or completely land-locked, Tanzania is well-situated to become a regional economic and transit hub. The country is endowed with rich renewable and non-renewable resources that can power not only its own economic transformation but that of its neighbours as well.

Reporting on Africa tends to swing between two extremes: Africa is either a hopeless basket case or a rising continent. What is often conspicuously lacking is a more nuanced analysis of the unspectacular progress that is being made. Tanzania’s case shows that no country is pre-ordained to remain underdeveloped.

Tanzania is potentially an African economic giant due to what I call its unique characteristics — strategic location, diverse resources, and political stability. Perhaps most crucially, the country has enjoyed decades of political stability, with hardly any of the conflicts that have affected almost all its neighbours since independence in the 1960s.

During the presidency of Benjamin Mkapa, Tanzanian stakeholders began the exercise of formulating the country’s development vision. In 1995, a team of experts was the focal point of this exercise under the auspices of the Planning Commission. Participation took different forms, including symposiums, interviews, dialogues, and meetings that brought together different social groups.
