October 10, 2026 - Equity Group Holdings Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. James Mwangi, has been appointed to the South North Commission on Development, a global body established to rethink cooperation between the Global North and Global South in advancing sustainable development.
The appointment places an experienced African private sector leader at the centre of international discussions on development financing, economic partnerships and inclusive growth. It also carries significance for Tanzania, where financial inclusion, access to capital, agricultural development, youth entrepreneurship and digital transformation remain important drivers of economic growth.
The South North Commission is an independent body established by the German government and co-chaired by former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and former Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla. Dr. Mwangi is one of two business leaders appointed to the Commission and the only business leader representing Africa.
He joins prominent global figures, including World Bank President Ajay Banga, World Trade Organization Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, United Nations Development Programme Administrator Alexander De Croo and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Denis Mukwege.
Commenting on his appointment, Dr. Mwangi emphasised the need to reposition Africa's role in global development discussions.
“Africa should no longer be seen through the lens of aid. It is a source of growth, talent, innovation and investment,” said Dr. Mwangi.
Equity Bank Tanzania Highlights Significance for Local Markets
Equity Bank Tanzania Managing Director Isabela Maganga said Dr. Mwangi's appointment was significant for Tanzania because it brings practical African private sector experience into global discussions on development financing and inclusive economic growth.
“Dr. Mwangi’s appointment to the South North Commission on Development is a proud moment for Equity and a significant signal for markets such as Tanzania. It reinforces the importance of development models that move beyond aid and focus on unlocking local enterprise, financing productive sectors and building institutions that can support long-term growth,” said Maganga.
She added that the Commission's focus aligns with efforts to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), farmers, entrepreneurs, women, young people and businesses through financial solutions that enable them to expand operations, create jobs and participate more fully in the economy.
For Tanzania, stronger development partnerships and access to financing are particularly relevant to strengthening local businesses, improving agricultural value chains and mobilising investment for productive economic activities.
Commission to Shape Future Global Development Cooperation
The South North Commission builds on the legacy of the North-South Commission, chaired by former German Chancellor Willy Brandt from 1977.
The Commission is scheduled to hold its first meeting in Bangkok on October 16 and 17, 2026, alongside the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings. It is expected to present interim findings in 2027 and a final report at the end of 2028.
Its recommendations are expected to contribute to shaping the global development agenda beyond the United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
Dr. Mwangi brings 35 years of experience in demonstrating how private capital and financial inclusion can support development at scale.
Equity Group serves 23.3 million customers across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan. According to the Group, 98 per cent of its transactions now take place outside traditional bank branches, reflecting the growing role of digital channels in expanding access to financial services.
Mobilising Private Capital for Inclusive Growth
The Commission's work is relevant to Tanzania's development priorities, including mobilising private investment, strengthening domestic financial institutions, expanding financing for SMEs and agriculture, creating employment opportunities for young people and building climate resilience.
Alongside Dr. Mwangi's role on the Commission, Equity Group will continue advancing initiatives such as the Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan, private sector financing for development, the Accra Reset and the Africa Prosperity Compact.
The Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan is a US$6 billion initiative backed by partners including the International Finance Corporation (IFC), British International Investment (BII) and the Dutch entrepreneurial development bank FMO. The plan aims to reach 100 million customers and five million borrowing businesses by 2030.
For Equity Bank Tanzania, Dr. Mwangi's appointment reinforces the role of private sector leadership in advancing development approaches that are practical, inclusive and measurable. It also highlights the importance of connecting individuals and businesses to finance, skills, markets and technology to support sustainable long-term growth.
As Tanzania continues to advance financial inclusion and build a more digitally enabled economy, the appointment provides an opportunity for African private sector experience to contribute to shaping international development cooperation, with financial inclusion remaining an important pathway to enterprise growth, job creation and shared prosperity.
