LAFARGE TANZANIA HANDS OVER COMMUNITY WATER PROJECT TO SONGWE VIWANDANI VILLAGE IN MBEYA

The Lafarge Tanzania CEO, Catherine Langreney and the Mbeya District Commissioner, Nyirembe Sabi cut the ribbon to launch the water project donated by Lafarge Tanzania to Songwe Viwandani village in Mbeya region over the weekend.

September 12, 2015: Lafarge Tanzania has commissioned a community water project of over Tsh 10 million to the Songwe Viwandani village in Mbeya region. This project consists of a water storage tank and equipment to supply drinking water for this village.

Speaking at the brief ceremony on the site, the Lafarge Tanzania CEO Catherine Langreney said that Lafarge Tanzania was committed to helping the communities get access to clean water by providing long term and sustainable solutions through provision sustainable water sources as a way of giving back to the community.

“Lafarge Tanzania recognizes that water is a basic need and an important catalyst for both economic and social development of the country. Finding sustainable solutions to the problems of our people underscores our commitment to the communities in which we operate” said Langreney adding that clean, accessible water is essential to the health of communities and it is critical to environment and essential for economic prosperity.

Langreney emphasized that provision of clean water supply in the village means improved sanitation and better living conditions for the Songwe village residents. “People were crossing Tunduma highway road to come and fetch water from the Lafarge Tanzania estate houses posing a serious safety risk to the community”

Officiating as Guest of honor at the commissioning, the Mbeya District Commissioner, Mr. Nyirembe Sabi commended Lafarge Tanzania for the initiative adding that it is a demonstration of effective corporate social responsibility that should be emulated by other business entities.

“Communities and environment need clean, accessible water to thrive, I am glad that this facility will provide the community with the much-needed resource and wish to thank Lafarge Tanzania for their efforts”, said Nyirembe. The DC reiterated government’s commitment to continue working with the private sector by supporting initiatives that impact positively on the communities.

Lafarge Tanzania’s commitment to enriching lives also extends to the communities, through the affordable housing project which aims at helping communities in Songwe get access to decent and affordable housing.
