NMB BANK PLC. SHAREHOLDERS APPROVE TZS 68.5 BILLION DIVIDEND PAYOUT FOR 2020
NMB Bank Plc. Shareholders Approve TZS 68.5 billion dividend payout for 2020, a 43% increase over 2019 dividend payment
At its 21st Annual General Meeting held on June 4th 2021, shareholders of NMB Bank Plc., Tanzania’s leading financial institution, approved a dividend payout of TZS 137 per share, amounting to TZS 68.5 billion, for the financial year ended 31st December 2020.
The TZS 68.5 billion dividend payout is a 43% increase compared to the dividend payout of TZS 48 billion paid for the year ended 31 December 2019.
This marks the third consecutive annual increase in the company’s dividend. The dividend will be paid on or about 16th June 2021.
The 43% increase in dividend payout reflects the excellent 2020 annual results, and the strength of the Bank’s capital position. In a year which was shaped by uncertainty in the overall global operating environment due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the bank recorded a 45% rise in profit after tax to TZS 206 billion in 2020, setting a record in the Tanzanian banking industry. The bank also recorded an industry-best 51% cost-to-income ratio and a 5% NPL ratio at the end of December 2020, both being within regulatory limits. This demonstrates the bank’s continued commitment to operational efficiency (cost controls) and improved risk management over lending portfolio. Furthermore, the bank’s strong first quarter 2021 results affirm the disciplined execution of the bank’s strategy, with the profit after tax increasing 33% from the first quarter of 2020 to TZS 65 billion in the quarter ended 31st March 2021.

Smart Codes has launched its umbrella company, Smart Africa Group (SAG) that will house all its 5 departments that have since been registered as independent companies and are becoming subsidiaries. Over the years Smart Codes has grown from a Tech led company to one that offers different services in marketing, technology, and innovation. The move now is to have a more structured approach where all the services are broken down to fit the 5 subsidiaries.
Smart Codes started in 2010 with Edwin Bruno as the founder. The company was then incorporated in 2014 as an LLC and continues to grow. Throughout this time the focus of the company has been pushing forward digital transformation for its clients and partners. This does not change, however, the company is setting the stage to do even more in this same direction.
“Creating SAG enables the company to manage growth and increase trust from clients. SAG’s functions with this new structure, are advisory, leadership, and direction. It will oversee operations, provide a unified vision for the group, help to defend the interests of the clients, and ensure that each subsidiary continues to experience the same level of growth that Smart Codes has had so far. By creating SAG we can ensure that we have the best talent, tools, and processes” said Edwin Bruno Chief Executive Officer (CEO) & Chief Visionary Officer (CVO) at SAG.

AFRICA’S BIGGEST OFFICIAL LENDER: CHINA OR THE WORLD BANK?
![]() |
| Zambia's President Edgar Lungu, left, shake hands with China's President Xi Jinping, in Beijing, China, Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018. |
Is this true in Africa (All references to Africa in this article refer to all of Africa, including North Africa, rather than only sub-Saharan Africa)? It depends on how you define “official”. Available evidence shows that while credits from all Chinese financiers, including commercial banks and corporations, to African governments and state-owned enterprises, exceed those of the World Bank, the World Bank is still the largest official creditor in Africa.
The World Bank confirms that China is the world’s largest bilateral official creditor, meaning that it is the largest single creditor country. The Paris Club group of bilateral lenders comprising mostly developed countries from the global North were once large bilateral lenders in Africa, but by 2017 debt to the Paris Club amounted to less than 5% of external debt in Africa. Other bilateral lenders include Russia, India and Turkey, but their overseas lending programs are smaller than China’s.

SAFETY TIPS & HACKS FOR EVERY BOLT USER TO REMEMBER
As the fastest-growing ride-hailing platform in Africa, Bolt provides riders tips and hacks that will keep them moving about safely at a touch of a button.
Bolt is active in 4 cities within Tanzania – Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Arusha and Dodoma. Bolt offers you great service with the best prices in town.
Here are 5 tips and hacks to get the best out of your Bolt Experience.
- Request and wait for your driver inside - When you order for a ride, avoid spending time outside alone with your phone in your hand. Wait indoors until the app shows your driver is arriving. This way, you are safe until your driver arrives.
- Double-check the car and its registration plate - When you are matched with a Bolt driver, you receive information about his name, vehicle model and car plate number from the app. Be sure that the vehicle that arrives is the same one you requested on the app. If anything doesn’t reflect what’s on the app, do not get in the vehicle and report to Bolt via the in-app support tab.
- Buckle In - Always wear a seatbelt! It doesn’t matter if you’re sitting in the front or back. Also, keep your hands and body parts within the vehicle when the car is in motion and keep calm till you arrive at your destination.
