WAYS THROUGH WHICH TANZANIA CAN FURTHER SUPPORT ITS PRIVATE SECTOR
According to the Legatum Institute – a UK-based think tank – this growth has been made possible through investment efforts from the country’s public and private sectors. As such, Tanzania has become a major exporter of minerals and precious metals such as gold. As well as this, the country is home to a vibrant tourism sector thanks to the country’s well-known conservation areas and national parks.
Going forward, investment and engagement from the country’s private sector are likely to continue to form an important component of the country’s economic growth through tax revenue, job creation and tech innovation.
For example, according to the United States Agency for International Development, the private sector already employs 70 per cent of the country’s youth.
Tanzania’s prosperous private sector is a reason for optimism for the country’s future growth. Despite this, there remain ways we can further support this sector in years to come.

MANAGING YOUR INVESTMENTS DURING A PERIOD OF TURMOIL
By Vimal Kumar, Chief Executive: Retail and Business Banking, Digital and Customer Experience, Absa Regional Operations
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected every sector of society across the globe, with everyone impacted from an economic, health and social perspective. While the majority of people have focused on stability and job security during this period, affluent and high-net-worth individuals (HNWI) saw an erosion to their personal net worth as economic activity and investments deteriorated during the pandemic.
As individuals tried to remain as liquid as possible during this period, some of the key trends reflected were the shifting of deposits to secure banks, while automation and digitalisation were further embraced to offer customers the convenience and flexibility to manage their investments at their convenience.
How has COVID-19 affected investors?
The tremendous uncertainty has caused cascading waves of destruction across global economies, and impacted many in the high-net-worth individual (HNWI) and affluent brackets.
COVID-19 has affected all parts of society. In comparison to the working class, where the focus is holding onto jobs, high net worth individuals have been heavily impacted due to the wealth destruction that is occurring. Investors are seeing erosion in personal net worth and a good percentage are worried about consumer confidence due to the global recession, job losses and reduction of investments into economies.

EXPERTS: TANZANIA IS WELL PLACED TO REAP THE BENEFITS OF M-HEALTH INITIATIVES
In recent years, the evolution of digital technology has emerged as a key trend. This has in turn presented many countries with a number of benefits and innovative ways of overcoming a variety of challenges. The rise in digital health – or m-health – is one example.
For many healthcare providers, m-health is providing new ways of managing and delivering healthcare. According to Deloitte, a professional services company, m-health is helping to empower patients and practitioners. For example, people can research their symptoms or share their experiences with others to help identify treatment solutions.
With a growing digital landscape and mobile penetration rate that is set to continue, industry experts have indicated that Tanzania is well placed to reap the benefits of m-health initiatives.
For example, m-health can provide patients with a way of researching their ailments and – in some cases – remove the need for people to attend a physical consultation. Elsewhere, SMS services have also played a key role in disseminating health and nutritional tips for mothers and their newborn babies.
