TANZANIA TOPPLES SOUTH AFRICA AS KENYA’S TOP SOURCE OF IMPORTS IN AFRICA

Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta (right) and his Tanzania counterpart President Samia Suluhu Hassan having a word during Kenya-Tanzania Business Forum at Serena Hotel on May 5, 2021.

Tanzania has become the largest source market for Kenya on the continent after overtaking South Africa, partly on the back of increased orders of maize and rice by millers.

Official trade statistics show expenditure on goods trucked from Tanzania nearly doubled last year to Sh54.47 billion from Sh27.88 billion the year before.

The 95.38 percent, or Sh26.59 billion, bump in imports catapulted Tanzania to the top position in Africa after orders from South Africa fell 3.72 percent to Sh44.08 billion, according to data collated by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS).

“Imports from Tanzania nearly doubled from Sh27.9 billion in 2020 to Sh54.5 billion in 2021 partly attributable to increase in imports of maize and rice from this country,” KNBS analysts wrote in the Economic Survey 2022.

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta and his counterpart Samia Suluhu in May last year pledged to end persistent strained trade relations between the two largest economies in the six-nation East African Community bloc which have, for years, hindered the smooth flow of goods and services.

Ms Suluhu’s visit to Nairobi touched off a series of joint trade meetings aimed at flattening barriers to the flow of goods.

PRESIDENT SAMIA KEEN ON GAS PIPELINE

President Samia Suluhu Hassan bids farewell to President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda at State House in Entebbe yesterday after a two-day state tour of Uganda.

While implementation of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) from Uganda to Tanzania is taking shape, plans are afoot to construct a parallel pipeline to transport natural gas from Dar es Salaam to Kampala through the same passage, President Samia has revealed.

President Samia who returned to the country yesterday after a two-day state visit in Uganda at the invitation of her host, President Yoweri Museveni, was upbeat that development of the gas pipeline will be realised.

The Tanzanian leader made the assurance on Tuesday during a Business Summit organised by the Private Sector Foundation of Uganda (PSFU).

INSIDE TANZANIA, UGANDA DEALS SEALED DURING PRESIDENT SAMIA’S STATE VISIT TO UGANDA

President Samia Suluhu Hassan is briefed by Roofings Group Chairman and Executive Director, Sikander Lalani on operations at the firm’s factory in Kampala yesterday. The firm manufactures steel products, including roofing sheets and pipes.

Kampala - Tanzania has agreed to cut a road toll by about 71 percent on the Uganda-bound cargo trucks as part of the consensus reached during the meeting of leaders of the two countries.

From mid-last year, Tanzania government charged $500 on Ugandan cargo trucks as fees collected for road repairs and maintenance.

Kampala immediately protested and filed a complaint with the East African Community (EAC) Council of Ministers accusing Dodoma of breaching the Common Market Protocol by imposing different road user charges to partner states in the same trading bloc. The Common Market is one of the pillars of the seven member regional bloc.

However, starting next financial year, which kicks-off this July, Tanzania will charge $10 per 100km on the cargo trucks plying the 1,485km Mutukula-Dar es Salaam route.

The $10 translates into about $144 for the distance, down from the $500.

While Dodoma had increased the levy on Uganda-bound cargo trucks, it maintained that of $152 charged on Rwanda-bound cargo trucks. Tanzania serves as gateway to the sea to its landlocked neighbours Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Malawi, mainly through the Dar es Salaam port.

Energy Minister, January Makamba presents the government's report on the oil situation in the country to the National Assembly in Dodoma yesterday to announce a sum of 100 billion Shillings in grants to cushion against the rising prices of petroleum products in the country for the remaining period of the financial year 2021/2022.
  • Outlines long-term measures, MPs congratulate President Samia
The government has dished out a total of 100bn/- as an emergency measure to subsidise and cushion the skyrocketing fuel prices with effect from next month.

Announcing the measure in the National Assembly on Tuesday, Minister for Energy, January Makamba said President Samia Suluhu Hassan having convened a meeting with Ministers directed for instituting the measure to bring relief to Tanzanians.

Elaborating, the Minister noted that the funds released in fuel relief package will not affect development projects.

He said the Head of State ordered tightening of government expenditure for the remaining days of the ending financial year (2021/2022) before the kick-off of the new financial year, so that the money saved could help Tanzanians in securing the relief.

The Minister said the relief in fuel prices will be felt from 1st June, 2022 because oil dealers had already incurred import costs for the fuel stock that is currently in the market.

“The prices issued by the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) in May (May Cap Prices) included importation costs that oil dealers already incurred,” explained the Minister.

According to the Minister, government is in the final stages of acquiring loans from the World Bank (WB) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) that will be used in the next financial year to subsidise fuel and other commodities that directly touch people’s lives.

SILVERLANDS TANZANIA NAMED AMONGST AFRICA’S FASTEST GROWING COMPANIES IN THE FINANCIAL TIMES’ 2022 SURVEY

London, 3 May 2022Silverlands Tanzania Limited (Silverlands Tanzania) has been named as one of Africa’s Fastest Growing Companies 2022 in an inaugural report published today by The Financial Times. The report names the top 75 companies across the continent as measured by the strongest revenue growth between 2017 and 2020. Only six businesses from the agricultural sector made the top 75.

Silverlands Tanzania was one of only two Tanzanian companies making the top 75 and it achieved an extraordinary revenue growth of 40.4% p.a., ranking 25th overall, and has continued to achieve similar growth rates despite the pandemic.

SilverStreet Capital, a leading impact investment advisor, first invested into Silverlands Tanzania in 2014 with an aim to positively impact smallholder poultry and grain farmers in East Africa, an industry that was previously poorly developed.

Silverlands Tanzania is an integrated poultry business that produces high quality poultry feed and day-old chicks. From a standing start in 2014, it is now the largest feed producer in Tanzania and the third largest producer of day-old chicks, selling 14 million in 2021.

Before Silverlands I created Silverlands Tanzania, the Tanzanian poultry sector remained undeveloped because of inefficient breeds and poor-quality feed. STL introduced new poultry breeds for layers and broilers as well as the Sasso breed, a dual-purpose breed suited to the free-range, village environment. Silverlands Tanzania’s chick and feed products are aimed at smallholder farmers who represent the very large majority of poultry production in Tanzania. With better feed and breeds, Tanzanian poultry farmers are able to produce poultry profitably and demand growth has been substantial. Increased chicken and egg production has helped to reduce stunting in children, a common problem in Sub-Saharan Africa.
