NMB FOUNATION ALLOCATES TZS 1 BILLION TO EMPOWER 50 YOUNG TANZANIANS THROUGH NURU YANGU SCHOLARSHIP

Fifty high-performing young Tanzanians from financially disadvantaged families are set to receive university education and career-readiness support after NMB Foundation (NMBF), in partnership with NMB Bank, allocated TZS 1 billion for the 2026/27 academic year.

The support will be provided through the third intake of the Nuru Yangu Scholarship and Mentorship Programme, an initiative aimed at removing financial barriers that prevent academically capable young Tanzanians from pursuing higher education.

Applications are open from today, September 3, until September 18, 2026, and must be submitted through the official NMB Foundation website, foundation.nmbbank.co.tz

The programme targets Tanzanian students who completed Form Six in 2026 with a Division One score of between three and five points, demonstrate financial need and are preparing to join recognised higher learning institutions in Tanzania.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam, NMB Foundation General Manager Nelson Karumuna said the 50 successful applicants would join 101 students who benefited from the programme’s first two intakes.

Their inclusion will bring the total number of beneficiaries to 151 students. NMBF has invested more than TZS 2.1 billion in supporting the first two cohorts, with another TZS 1 billion committed to the 2026/27 intake.

“The support will cover tuition fees, living expenses, field practical training, compulsory university charges and learning materials, including laptops,” Karumuna said.

He added that beneficiaries would also receive academic mentorship, leadership development, employment preparation and practical learning opportunities designed to help them succeed both at university and in their future careers.

Karumuna emphasised that the application process is completely free, warning applicants against individuals or organisations claiming to facilitate or sell scholarship opportunities.

“No individual or organisation has been authorised to sell or facilitate scholarship places,” he said, adding that selection would be based on the published criteria and a detailed verification process to ensure the support reaches eligible students.

The Nuru Yangu Scholarship and Mentorship Programme was launched on May 19, 2022, with the objective of addressing financial barriers that prevent academically talented young Tanzanians from accessing higher education.

The programme's impact is reflected in the experiences of its beneficiaries.

Elia Johnson Kaberege, who graduated with a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Dar es Salaam in 2025, said the scholarship covered education costs that his family could not afford.

Another beneficiary, Irene John Busorwa, a graduate of Mzumbe University, said financial difficulties had nearly prevented her from enrolling at university. Through Nuru Yangu, she received support throughout her three years of study and has since secured employment with an audit firm.

NMB Foundation is encouraging eligible young Tanzanians to take advantage of the opportunity and submit their applications through the official website before the September 18, 2026 deadline.
