TWO DECADES AGO, TELEVISION WAS A SYMBOL OF WEALTH

By Manish Jangra, Country Head, Samsung Electronics Tanzania.

Dar es Salaam - If you ask me to name the most common electrical appliance that Tanzanians had at home over the past two decades, I will tell you that it was the television.

You might be surprised, but that's largely the reality compared to the current situation where almost every household activity is done with a home appliance.

If you asked anyone during that time why they didn’t buy an electric stove, kettle, refrigerator, washing machine, blender, or air conditioner, they would tell you that it was a luxury to have them and that they increased electricity expenses, thus the cost of living.

But the situation has changed significantly; many people are considering different ways to simplify their daily lives, by doing multiple things within a short time.

According to Statista, in 2024, revenue in the household appliances market in Tanzania reached 3.03 billion US dollars. This market is estimated to grow annually by 5.54% (CAGR 2024-2028).

By 2024, online sales are expected to contribute 1.1% of all revenue in the household appliances market in Tanzania. In addition, the household appliances market is expected to experience a growth of 3.9% in 2025.

AfDB PRESIDENT TO CO-CHAIR CLEAN COOKING SUMMIT WITH LEADERS OF TANZANIA, NORWAY & INTERNATIONAL ENERGY AGENCY

  • Global leaders from government, private sector and civil society will meet in Paris on 14 May for the first-ever leaders’ summit dedicated to making 2024 a turning point for clean cooking access in Africa.
The African Development Bank Group President Dr Akinwumi Adesina will co-chair the upcoming Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa alongside President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre of Norway and International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol.

An estimated four in five Africans cook their meals over open fires and traditional stoves, using wood, charcoal, animal dung and other polluting fuels. The practice has devastating impacts on health, gender equality, and the environment, with 600,000 Africans, mainly women and children, dying annually from indoor pollution.

Dr Adesina said: “Access to clean cooking isn’t merely an energy issue. It is a fundamental human right, and a promise for a healthier, and more sustainable future. The African Development Bank is committed to tackling this challenge head-on, and I am therefore pleased to co-chair the Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa alongside distinguished global leaders.”

“President Suluhu Hassan, Prime Minister Støre and I are delighted to welcome President Adesina as a co-chair for the Summit,” said Dr Birol. “The African Development Bank has been involved in early preparations and has been a critical partner for the IEA on the issue of clean cooking. Its support will be an invaluable addition to this major Summit, which aims to deliver strong policy recommendations and additional financial commitments, while cementing clean cooking as a global priority for years to come.”

TBL, CRDB FOUNDATION COLLABORATE ON PRE-FINANCING BARLEY FARMING

Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL), one of Tanzania’s top manufacturers and employers and a key partner in the socio-economic development of the country, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the CRDB Bank Foundation to collaboratively implement the Barley Farming Pre-financing Seed Capital Scheme.

This collaboration, rooted in TBL's Smart Agriculture Initiative, represents a key milestone in the company's efforts to promote sustainable farming practices and empower local communities across Tanzania.

The TBL’s Smart Agriculture Initiative aims to equip 100% of its direct farmers by 2025, ensuring they are skilled, connected, and financially empowered. By focusing on cultivating sorghum, barley, and grapes, which are essential resources for TBL's operations, the initiative directly supports farmers in enhancing productivity and leveraging natural resources efficiently.

With excitement for the collaboration, Michelle Kilpin, Tanzania Breweries Limited Managing Director, said: “By combining the efforts of both TBL and CRDB Bank Foundation, the partnership aims to significantly boost the barley sector and enhance the economic welfare of small-holder farmers in Tanzania.

I believe our partnership is a good example of how collaboration can play a positive role in bringing about positive change and creating value for various stakeholders. Having reached this milestone today, we are confident that it will be the catalyst for similar activities across the country, and we believe that this initiative will be an inspiration to others.”

Through this alliance with the CRDB Bank Foundation, TBL seeks to integrate financially empowered criteria into its smart agriculture framework, enabling farmers to adopt sustainable practices that promote environmental stewardship and reduce reliance on chemical inputs.

This partnership underscores TBL's broader commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 2, which emphasizes achieving zero hunger; SDG 12, for responsible consumption and production; SDG 13, for climate action; and SDG 17, to enhance partnership for the goals.

The Foundation’s initiative, named the iMbeju program, aims to boost the barley sector and enhance the economic welfare of small-holder farmers across Manyara, Karatu, and Monduli Districts for the 2024 agriculture season. The TBL and CRDB Bank Foundation aspire to drive long-term sustainability and resilience in the agriculture sector.

The CRDB Bank Foundation Managing Director, Ms. Tully Esther Mwambapa, says the iMbeju program has been on the market for almost a year now and has attracted a huge number of youth and women, its primary target. To date, she says that the program, which involves financial literacy training and the provision of seed capital, has trained around 250,000 women and offered seed capital to the tune of TZS 5 billion.
