Tanzanian consumers have been advised to purchase Apple products from authorised dealers and enjoy manufacturers warranty, the assurance of paying for quality and genuine products.

The advise was given yesterday by Vipul Shah, the CEO of istore, during the launch of the outlet, which is ranked as Apple Premium Reseller, the highest distribution partnership with Apple.

“Being an Apple Premium Reseller  shows that the reseller is committed to investing in and building the Apple brand and that Apple recognises this effort and will use the APR as its main partner in country,” Shah said.

The CEO noted that buying from the APR-ranked dealer have an added advantage in that the prices will be the same as those in other parts of the world, cutting down the necessity for importing from abroad.
He noted that while Apple products may appear to be expensive, in reality they offer value for money, noting that while prices of apple products have remained constant since 2010, the technology of the products have appreciated.

BULGARIA'S CENTRAL BANK REVOKES LICENSE OF TROUBLED LENDER K.T.B.

The main office of Corporate Commercial Bank, or K.T.B., in Sofia, Bulgaria, on Thursday.

LONDON — Bulgaria’s central bank on Thursday revoked the license of one of the country’s biggest lenders and moved to open bankruptcy proceedings.

The lender, Corporate Commercial Bank, also known as K.T.B., has been closed since a bank run in June, leaving businesses and consumers without access to about $4 billion in deposits.

The move on Thursday halts all activities at the bank and opens the way for the payment of more than half of the deposits — about $2.3 billion, which are insured by the state under European Union law. The depositors, hundreds of whom have been staging near-weekly protests since August, will have access to their money beginning early next month, the central bank said.

In a statement on Thursday, the central bank said that because of a write-off after an audit last month, K.T.B. had negative capital of 3.75 billion leva, or a shortfall of $2.4 billion. The central bank said it had asked a court to begin bankruptcy proceedings.

The 32 meter-wide bridge, will have six lanes – three in each direction – and two pedestrian and cyclist lanes with a width of 2.5 meters. There will also be a toll-bridge plaza on either side of the bridge.

NSSF is funding 60 per cent of the Tsh. 214.6 billion project, while the government of Tanzania is contributing 40 per cent of the remaining cost. The bridge will be one of its kind in East and Central Africa, and is one of the most important milestone projects ever to be undertaken by the government since independence.

TANZANIAN PARLIAMENT TO DEBATE IPTL PROBE REPORTS

Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman Zitto Kabwe.

Dodoma. Parliament will debate two investigation reports on the $122 million (Sh207 billion) Independent Power Tanzania Limited (IPTL) controversy during its ongoing sitting, The Citizen has learnt.
The move is a big blow to the government, which initially wanted the reports to be tabled in the next sitting scheduled for February 2015 on the grounds that the office of the Controller and Auditor General (CAG) was had yet to conclude its investigation.
Parliament’s Steering Committee, which met on Tuesday evening under the chairmanship of Deputy Speaker Job Ndugai, agreed that reports compiled by CAG and the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau be tabled on November 27 for debate.

PCCB BOSS SUBMITS ESCROW ACCOUNT PROBE DOSIER TO THE PRIME MINISTER

PCCB Boss, Edward Hosea

Dar es Salaam, Tuesday November 4 2014: The Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) has submitted to Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda its investigation report about the multibillion-shilling Tegeta escrow account, it was confirmed yesterday.
The PCCB move comes as the Controller and Auditor General (CAG) was yesterday accused of deliberately delaying the final report to prevent Parliament from debating it.
But the move also came as a relief for the government, which has been under pressure by the donor community to complete investigations and prosecute those responsible for the scandal.
Donors announced last month that they were suspending general budget support totalling about Sh1 trillion, pending the completion and outcome of the investigation.
When the $122 million (Sh207billion as per the current exchange rate) escrow saga first emerged, the CAG’s office promised to finish the forensic audit within 45 days.

UCHUMI SUPERMARKET ACQUIRES DAR'S SIFAMART SUPERMARKET

Nairobi/Dar es Salaam. Uchumi supermarket has acquired a store in Tanzania as part of its aggressive expansion plan in that market. Chief executive Jonathan Ciano said the acquisition of the outlet from Dar es Salaam-based Sifamart Supermarkets was concluded last week in a deal financed by debt.
Uchumi is yet to decide whether to take over a second branch operated by Sifamart in the same city. The acquisition is part of the supermarket’s planned expansion in Tanzania over the next eight months, when it expects to have opened a total of six stores in Dar es Salaam, Morogoro, Arusha and Mwanza.
The latest expansion increased Uchumi’s branches in Tanzania to five.
“Uchumi concluded closely guarded discussions with the management of Sifamart, allowing Uchumi to take over the operations … effective November 1, 2014,” Mr Ciano said.
“The acquisition was supported by our financiers who have leased the supermarket equipment to Uchumi and our esteemed suppliers who have enabled the working capital to the tune of TSh1.02 billion (Sh53 million),” Mr Ciano said.

12 IRANIAN NATIONALS CHARGED WITH SH 2 BILLION DRUG HAUL

Dar es Salaam. Some 12 Iranian nationals were yesterday charged at the Kisutu court with trafficking in drugs worth over Sh2 billion.
The accused were brought before Resident Magistrate Janeth Kaluyenda but were not required to enter any plea because the court has no jurisdiction to hear the case. The foreigners were all returned to remand prison.
According to prosecution led by state attorney Hellen Mushi, the accused committed the offence contrary to section 16(b) of the Drugs and Prevention of Illicit Trafficking in Drugs Act, Cap number 95 of 2002 as amended by written laws number 6 of 2012.

CHINESE DIPLOMATIC STAFF 'WENT ON ILLEGAL IVORY BUYING SPREE'

Elephant tusks. It's alleged that Chinese diplomatic and military staff went on buying sprees for illegal ivory while on official visits to Tanzania.

Chinese diplomatic and military staff went on buying sprees for illegal ivory while on official visits to Tanzania, sending prices soaring, an environmental activist group said Thursday.
Tens of thousands of elephants are estimated to be slaughtered in Africa each year to feed rising Asian demand for ivory products, mostly from China, the continent's biggest trading partner.
When Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Tanzania in 2013, members of his government and business delegation bought so much ivory that local prices doubled to $700 per kilogram, the UK-based Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) said in a report, citing ivory traders in the Dar es Salaam.

EAST AFRICA OIL SAFE FROM PRICE DROP - POLICIES ARE THE PROBLEM

Tougher government terms that will squeeze corporate rewards, not the sharp crude price drop, are the more potent threat to east Africa's oil boom.
Tougher government terms that will squeeze corporate rewards, not the sharp crude price drop, are the more potent threat to east Africa's oil boom.
The 25 per cent fall in oil prices to below $85 a barrel from July has rattled high-cost producers, but industry insiders say Kenya and Uganda have enough oil to secure investment.
"These projects are long-term, multi-decade projects and hence short term variations in the oil price don't fundamentally change their value," Britain's Tullow Oil, a major regional player, said in a statement toReuters.
Uganda and Kenya have together found about 2 billion barrels of recoverable crude to date, part of a string of finds that could soon make the region a major global supplier of oil and gas, although it has yet to ship a single cargo.

KENYA, BURUNDI MOVE UP IN WORLD BANK'S RANKING OF BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT

Kenya and Burundi are the only East African countries that have registered improvements in their business environment, according to the World Bank’s 2015 Ease of Doing Business Report.

Kenya improved by a single position in the global competitiveness ranking, to stand at position 136 this year, up from 137 in 2013, while Burundi moved up four positions from 156 in 2013 to 152 this year.
Tanzania’s ranking dropped from position 130 to 131, while Uganda was ranked 150.
Within the EAC, Rwanda and Burundi were singled out as the countries that have registered improvements in the business environment even though Rwanda dropped from position 32 to 46. The World Bank attributed this drop to a change of methodology used in making the rankings.

REGIONAL ECONOMIES BANK ON BONDS

Newly-built Terminal 1A at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Kenya has invited bids for a bond to fund expansion of the airport.

Kenya has invited bids for a 12-year infrastructure bond worth $224 million in a tap sale to, among other things, fund expansion of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at a cost of $72.3 million.
“The bids will be received up to November 20, or until the amount is allocated to bids once they are submitted, or whichever comes first,” Kenya’s Central Bank said in a statement.
The Kenya Airports Authority has been under pressure to complete the project, which will see the airport’s overall passenger capacity rise to more than 30 million per year, up from 7 million.
In October, the first tranche of $169 million of the bond, with an average yield of 11.263 per cent, was oversubscribed.

TANZANIA GOVERNMENT, ORYX DIFFER ON MANAGEMENT OF OIL RESERVE

Tanzania plans to start a strategic petroleum reserve (SPR) at the Tanzania Italian Petroleum Refinery (Tiper) by January.
But the government and Swiss company Oryx Energies, who jointly own Tiper, have differed on who should manage the reserve.
Ministry of Energy and Minerals resource commissioner Stanley Malisa said they were in negotiations with the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), which has the mandate to manage the storage facility, and an Omani company on when to start supplying the reserve.
“The plan is to have at least 50,000 metric tonnes stored monthly once the SPR kicks off,” he said.

Between December 2011 and December 2012, domestic companies’ value grew by Tsh3 trillion ($1.7 billion), up from Tsh2.4 trillion ($1.3 billion).

KENYA PLANS US$145 MILLION e-REGISTRATION OF ADULTS, CHILDREN BY OCTOBER 2015

At the swipe of an e-card, all information on individuals, including relatives, bank accounts and property will be revealed.

An Israeli firm has been contracted to set up and manage the fresh registration of Kenyan citizens on a digital platform, setting in motion a process that will see all data on individuals and their assets stored in one data bank, starting February next year.
The government expects that once the $145 million registry is set up, all Kenyan nationals, including children, will be issued with electronic national identity cards by October next year. The new IDs will then be used universally from 2016.
The e-card will contain biodata of each individual, their kin, assets, bank accounts, driving licence, passport number and personal identification number (PIN) and an array of information that could also enhance the war against tax evasion, loan default and corruption.
The government also hopes the new IDs, similar to social security numbers in place in the United Kingdom and the United States of America, will aid the war against terror.

MUSEVENI JOLTS INVESTORS AT LONDON SUMMIT AS HE REJECTS LOANS

Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni says he is not convinced of the wisdom of using private investment funding for the energy sector, or for the construction of future power plants.

A high-level summit aimed at promoting a $250 billion investment drive across sub-Saharan Africa has been overshadowed by criticism from international investors over comments made by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
Uganda’s leader told 450 investors at The Global African Investment Summit in London, held from October 20 to 23, that he was not convinced of the wisdom of using private investment funding for the energy sector, or for the construction of future power plants.
Instead, he said, he was counting on China to provide $10 billion to build much of his country’s infrastructure backbone because Beijing offers the cheapest capital, does not interfere in African politics and has “big money” available.
His remarks, which were given widespread publicity in the Wall Street Journal and Britain’s Financial Times, drew a chorus of criticism from investors.

DANGOTE CEMENT SEEKS LICENCE FOR 75 MW POWER PLANT IN TANZANIA

Nigeria's Dangote Cement has applied for a licence to build a 75 megawatt coal-fired plant in Tanzania.

Nigeria's Dangote Cement has applied for a licence to build a 75 megawatt coal-fired plant in Tanzania that would power a $500 million cement factory now under construction, Tanzania's energy watchdog said.
Sub-Saharan Africa's leading cement producer plans to roll out plants across Africa to reach an annual capacity of 62 million tonnes by 2017, up from a projected 42 million tonnes this year.
But any corporate expansion plan in Africa must contend with power shortages, which are common across the continent. Businesses often complain that poor or erratic supplies deter investors and push up costs.

TOP TANZANIAN OFFICIALS ARRESTED IN ROW OVER OIL, GAS CONTRACTS

Offshore oil and gas exploration in the Indian Ocean. Top officials at Tanzania’s state-owned oil agency were arrested on charges of failing to release to parliament oil and gas contracts the government signed with foreign and local investors.

Top officials at Tanzania’s state-owned oil agency were arrested this week on charges of failing to release to parliament oil and gas contracts the government signed with foreign and local investors.
The arrests on Monday bring to a head a simmering row over whether Tanzania is getting a fair deal for its newfound natural resources.
Huge offshore gas finds promise to lift the east African nation into the ranks of middle-income countries by 2030 and free it from dependency on foreign aid. However, the government has insisted on keeping terms of production-sharing agreements secret, raising suspicion over whom they benefit.
The Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts (PAC) instructed police to arrest James Andelile, acting director general of Tanzania Petroleum Development Corp (TPDC), and its board chairman Michael Mwanda for refusing to comply with its November 3 deadline for releasing 26 oil and gas contracts to the parliamentary oversight panel.
