Driving environmental sustainability while supporting long-term economic growth
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania — April 22, 2026 — In celebration of Earth Day 2026, Stanbic Bank Tanzania has launched its Blue Roots campaign, a bold, continent-wide tree planting initiative under its parent company, Standard Bank Group. The campaign aims to plant one million trees across Africa, symbolising the Group’s one million business clients and reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development.
As part of this ambitious initiative, Stanbic Tanzania has pledged to plant 50,000 trees nationwide, contributing to environmental conservation while promoting healthier and more resilient communities.
A Step Towards Greener Communities
The campaign was officially launched at the Bank’s Head Office in Dar es Salaam, where leadership and staff took part in a symbolic tree planting exercise. The event highlighted Stanbic’s ongoing commitment to responsible growth and environmental stewardship.
For more than three decades, Stanbic Tanzania has played a pivotal role in the country’s socio-economic transformation—supporting businesses, enabling trade, and contributing to national development. The Blue Roots campaign builds on this legacy by aligning economic progress with environmental sustainability.
Building on a Strong Environmental Track Record
Stanbic’s commitment to environmental protection is not new. Over the past five years, the Bank has planted more than 102,850 trees across Tanzania, demonstrating a sustained effort to enhance green spaces and promote environmental awareness at the community level.
Tree planting initiatives such as Blue Roots offer far-reaching benefits—from improving air quality and soil health to protecting water sources and fostering healthier living environments. These efforts also contribute to long-term climate resilience, a key priority for sustainable development.
Leadership Perspectives
Speaking during the launch, Omari Mtiga, Head of Personal and Private Banking at Stanbic Bank Tanzania, emphasized the importance of balancing growth with environmental responsibility:
“For over 30 years, Stanbic has grown alongside Tanzania, supporting businesses and contributing to the country’s progress. The Blue Roots campaign reflects our commitment to continue building growth that also protects the environment and creates long-term value.”
Annette Nkini, Specialist in Sustainability and ESG Performance, highlighted the broader impact of the initiative:
“Tree planting is one of the ways we invest in communities and the future. Through our programmes, we aim to deliver impact that supports both people and the environment in a practical and meaningful way.”
