GEITA GOLD MINING CHAMPIONS PSYCHOSOCIAL WELLBEING AT NATIONAL OSHA SAFETY WEEK 2026

Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML), a subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti and one of Tanzania’s leading gold producers, is reinforcing its commitment to holistic workplace safety through active participation in the national exhibition organized by the Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA). The event is scheduled to take place in Njombe from 24 to 30 April 2026.

GGML’s presence at OSHA Safety Week underscores a forward-looking approach to occupational health—one that goes beyond traditional compliance to prioritise psychosocial wellbeing, an increasingly critical component of modern workplace safety frameworks.

Elevating Psychosocial Health in the Workplace

This year’s World Day for Safety and Health at Work, marked on 28 April, is guided by the theme: “Good Psychosocial Working Environments: A Pathway to Thriving Workers and Strong Organisations.” The theme highlights the growing recognition that factors such as workload management, communication practices, leadership styles, and organisational support systems are just as vital as physical safety measures.

For GGML, this is not a new direction but a reaffirmation of its long-standing values.

At the heart of GGML’s operations is a safety-first culture that places the physical and mental wellbeing of its workforce above all business objectives. This philosophy is anchored in the company’s broader values of respect, collaboration, and people-centric leadership.

Leadership Perspective: Wellbeing as a Performance Driver

The wellbeing of our people is not separate from the performance of this mine—it is the foundation of it,” said Ashraf Suryaningrat. “A productive, thriving operation depends on a workforce that is healthy, supported, and respected. OSHA Safety Week provides a vital platform to reaffirm that commitment while contributing to the national dialogue on psychosocial health.”

This perspective reflects a growing global consensus: organisations that invest in employee wellbeing are better positioned to achieve sustainable performance and resilience.

Integrated Health and Wellness Systems

GGML has established a comprehensive on-site health infrastructure staffed by qualified professionals, ensuring employees have access to medical services, occupational health monitoring, and continuous wellness support. These services are complemented by structured programmes designed to promote active lifestyles and mental wellbeing.

Importantly, the company extends its health and safety initiatives beyond its operations. Through partnerships with local health facilities and government bodies, GGML contributes to improved healthcare access across communities in the Geita Region.

Our participation in OSHA Safety Week reflects our belief that workplace safety must be holistic,” noted Dr. Kiva Mvungi. “We are here not only to showcase our systems but to actively engage in shaping a broader understanding of employee wellbeing—covering physical health, mental resilience, and a sense of dignity and purpose at work.”

Recognised Excellence in Safety Leadership

GGML’s leadership in occupational safety and health continues to gain national recognition. At the 2025 OSHA Gala, the company earned an impressive 11 awards, including a top national honour for exceptional leadership in workplace safety and health.

This track record positions GGML as a benchmark for best practices in Tanzania’s extractive sector and beyond.

Driving the National Conversation Forward

As Tanzania continues to strengthen its occupational safety landscape, GGML’s participation in OSHA Safety Week 2026 signals a broader shift in how organisations define and deliver workplace safety. By placing psychosocial wellbeing at the centre of its strategy, the company is not only protecting its workforce but also shaping a more sustainable and human-centred future of work.

Through collaboration with stakeholders and continued investment in people, GGML is helping to redefine safety—not just as protection from harm, but as the foundation for thriving individuals and resilient organisations.
