DEPOSITORS ALARMED AS ATM THEFT RISES SHARPLY

ATM card skimming is so big in Tanzania today that you can at anytime fall victim to cybercrime through ATM withdrawals. According to our sources, the problem is so rife in the country that cybercriminals operating in various parts of the country are now reportedly withdrawing hundreds of millions of shillings from banks countrywide through ATM cards.

GAS TO DOUBLE SUPPLY OF POWER BY 2016: TANESCO

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania aims to double its power production to 3,000 megawatts by 2016 at a cost of around $1.21 billion to meet rising demand by using its vast natural gas supplies; Reuters reported yesterday quoting an official with the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco).

Decklan Mhaiki, deputy managing director for investments at  the state-run Tanesco said the country’s installed capacity stood at 1,500 megawatts (MW), against a peak power demand of 900 MW. The full installed capacity is however rarely available due to power plant outages and drought, the news agencies published.

FORMER MEDICAL STORES DEPARTMENT BOSS IN COURT OVER FAKE HIV TEST KITS

Dar es Salaam.  Former Medical Stores Department (MSD) acting director general Sylvester Matandiko has finally appeared before the Kisutu Resident Magistrates’ Court to answer charges related to the importation of fake HIV test kits.

Mr Matandiko is charged along with three others. They are Sadiki Materu, a Quality Assurance manager of MSD as well as Zainabu Mfaume and Joseph Nchimbi, registrars from the Private Health Laboratories Board with several counts including occasioning a Sh3 billion loss through a transaction involving importation of defective bioline HIV test kits.

BANK FRAUD SUSPECTS IN KENYA, FBI WARDS

Nairobi, Thursday. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has asked Kenya to help arrest a ring of international bank hackers and cyber criminals based in the country.

The group, comprising Nigerians, targets banks and has stolen $2.5 billion (Sh215 billion) from banks and other institutions around the world.

Three other suspects, who are also wanted by the US law enforcement agency, are believed to operate from Lagos, Nigeria, while a fourth is based in Dubai, the United Arabs Emirate.

TURNOVER UP 500% AS DAR ES SALAAM STOCK EXCHANGE RELAXES RULES

Turnover at the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange has grown more than fivefold over the past five years, as a result of measures taken to increase the frequency of transactions.

DSE chief executive officer Molemi Marwa said that stringent regulations had discouraged companies seeking capital from listing and investors from buying shares.

“The relatively low liquidity had in the past made it somewhat unattractive for issuers and some investors to participate, but things have changed significantly in the past few months,” Mr Marwa said.

$600 MILLION HIGHWAY TO LINK KENYA, TANZANIA

The East African Community is finalising plans for a transnational highway to link the Kenyan and Tanzanian coasts.

The 460km highway, expected to cost $600 million, will start in Malindi, pass through Mombasa and Lunga Lunga on the Kenyan side, across to Tanga, then on through Pangani and Saadani to Bagamoyo in northeastern Tanzania.

The road is hoped to increase regional trade by linking the port of Mombasa in Kenya to northeastern Tanzania.

The Uganda police have recovered President Uhuru Kenyatta’s escort car after help from the suspect’s girlfriend, who lured him into a security trap at Wandegeya, a Kampala suburb.

A police source said the suspect, who was arrested driving Uhuru’s stolen BMW, is a Ugandan but his identity was concealed for fear to jeopardise the investigations. The suspect was arrested by the police Flying Squad operatives as he was meeting his girlfriend in Wandegeya, a Kampala suburb on Tuesday night. The vehicle had been vandalised, according to another police source who declined to be named because the issue involves another country.

TANZANIA'S TAXMAN WANTS REVIEW OF GAS, MINING DEALS

The Tanzania Revenues Authority (TRA) wants to review all contracts signed between the government and investors in the lucrative mining sector so that the country in order to collect more revenue from them. However, there is already concern that if not well handled, the move could create uncertainty and fear among foreign investors.

TRA yesterday announced that it was looking for consultants to renegotiate all the Mining Development Agreements (MDAs) and Production Sharing Agreements (PSAs) signed between the government and investors to arrest possible revenue leakages.

TANZANIA: ENOC AFRICA WINS ANOTHER TENDER TO IMPORT FUEL

A Tanzanian oil company, ENOC Africa, has won a tender to import fuel under the Petroleum Bulk Procurement System (BPS) for the month of October, this year.

The tender that attracted six oil companies including five foreign and international companies, was awarded to ENOC Africa after offering the lowest Weighted Average Premium per Metric Ton of 45.771 US dollars per MT.

Other companies (all international) that participated in the tender include Addax Energy SA which quoted 49.18 US dollars per MT, Augusta Energy SA (48.854 US dollars per MT) and Gapco (K) Ltd (47.543 US dollars per MT).

TANZANIA NATIONAL REINSURANCE CORPORATION KEEN TO CONSOLIDATE REINSURANCE BUSINESS

Some three years ago, the historical town of Bagamoyo, located about 60 kilometres north of Dar es Salaam, was hit by twin disasters as fire razed two luxurious hotels on the Indian Ocean beach.

In the mid-morning of March 23, 2009, the Paradise Holiday Resort and the neighbouring Oceanic Bay Hotel, horribly went ablaze and the properties worth billions of shillings were totally gutted down, following what was said to be an electrical fault.

TIGO TANZANIA LAUNCHES TIGO MATIC ATM IN DAR

A new mobile money feature on automated machines dubbed Tigo Matic, which enables customers to deposit and withdraw money from their Tigo Pesa accounts round the clock, has been launched.

Tigo's Head of Customer Operations, Mr Zaeem Khan said on Tuesday that the new Tigo Pesa service is an added feature to the initial services provided by the machine, which included paying bills and airtime recharge.

TANZANIA: BODABODA BIKES TO BE LICENCED

Moshi — Surface and Marine Transport Regulation Authority (SUMATRA) has announced sweeping measures against bodaboda owners and riders throughout the country in a move to tackle the accidents that cause numerous losses of lives.

SUMATRA Director General, Mr Gilliard Ngewe, said on Tuesday that no person will be allowed to ferry a passenger with motorcycle or tricycle if they do not have licences that are to be issued to only members of Bodaboda Association.

"We are going to take drastic measures because we cannot stay idle while people are dying from bodaboda accidents. This is devastating situation as the number of deaths surpasses even that of patients who die from malaria and AIDS.

TANZANIA: NO RELIEF FOR GASOLINE MOTORISTS AS FUEL PUMP PRICES GO UP

There will be no relief for motorists using gasoline engines this month as pump prices for petrol continued to go up, thus forcing them to make extra spending.

But the situation is different with diesel engines users where prices have continued to register a decline since May, this year, to the month under review.

Since most of the cargo trucks and buses are diesel engines, the continued price falling means majority of the people will enjoy stability of transport costs. The situation is also translated into easing prices for various goods.

BANK OF AFRICA TANZANIA, VODACOM SEAL DEAL TO OFFER SOFT LOANS TO DISTRIBUTORS

VODACOM and Bank of Africa Tanzania have sealed a deal that will enable telecom's company distributors to secure loans without collateral security at favourable terms for better services provision to their clients.

Under the partnership arrangement, Vodacom distributors will be entitled to take a minimum loan of 10m/- to the maximum of 75m/- at the interest rate of 1.7 per cent per month at one year payback period.

AZAM FC SEALS NATIONAL MICROFINANCE BANK SPONSORSHIP DEAL

After weeks of speculations, the National Microfinance Bank (NMB) and Mainland Premier League champions Azam FC have officially sealed a two-year undisclosed sponsorship contract.

The deal was signed at the club's base inside Chamazi Stadium on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam yesterday by Azam's Chairman, Said Mohamed and NMB Chief Executive Officer, Mark Wiessing. Shortly after signing the deal Mohamed said that from now onwards NMB will be Azam's main sponsor.

Zanzibar citizens can now buy TUKUZA electricity through their mobile phone's EzyPesa service, thanks to a recently inaugurated technological innovation.

The technology is popularly known as 'Tukuza', the Kiswahili abbreviation of the words 'Tumia Umeme Kwa Uangalifu Zanzibar', which means buying electricity according to what you can afford. Zantel Chief Executive Officer, Mr Pratap Ghose, said at the launching event on Wednesday in Zanzibar that the new service is a result of partnership between Zantel and Zanzibar Electric Company Limited (ZECO).

"We are happy that this new service will give ZECO and Zantel customers' additional convenience to access electricity using their EzyPesa accounts on their mobile phones, from anywhere and anytime, thereby saving time spent in queues," he said.

TANZANIA: WISDOM NEEDED IN DUAL CITIZENSHIP ENDORSEMENT

Debate on dual citizenship is still raging in the Constituent Assembly (CA). It has been reported that most committees have supported the idea of granting "special status" as opposed to dual-citizenship to people of Tanzanian origin who have willingly obtained citizenship in foreign countries.

The second draft constitution compiled by the now defunct Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) proposes special privileges to the ex-citizens to distinguish them with foreigners.

This has, however, been contested by Tanzanians in the Diaspora who have been craving to be granted dual-citizenship. Dual citizenship laws are very stringent, and each country has its own unique set of standards and criteria for granting citizenship to individuals.

TANZANIA: 23 SHOPS CLOSED DOWN OVER NON-USE OF EFDs

As shops in Kariakoo, Dar es Salaam, remained closed for the third consecutive day yesterday following protests by some traders over the use of electronic fiscal devices (EFDs), the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has closed down 23 shops in Namanga area, Kinondoni municipality, after failing to comply with the use of the gadgets.

Closure of the shops in the area is an outcome of an ongoing campaign launched by TRA, in collaboration with the police, several days ago to inspect the use of EFDs countrywide in the wake of opposition by traders to use the machines.

TANZANIA AGITATING FOR MORE TRANSPARENCY IN MINING

Six years ago, in 2008, President Jakaya Kikwete, on a visit to a European country, expressed Tanzania's willingness to join the global coalition of governments, companies and civil society working together to improve openness and accountable management of revenues from natural resources, Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).

Six years later, Tanzania had not only joined EITI, but had also formed its local chapter, Tanzania Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative Multi-Stakeholder Group (TEITI-MSG).

The initiative attained a complaint status and published its fourth Reconciliation report with the number of reporting companies rising from 9 mining companies and 3 gas companies in the first report in February 2011 to a total of 47 companies, of which 24 were in oil and gas industry.

BUILDERS SET TO BENEFIT AS CEMENT FIRMS FIGHT FOR REGIONAL MARKET

Cement production in East Africa is expected to rise sharply in the next three years due to investments by new entrants and existing players expanding to defend their market shares, heralding further price gains for builders.

Karsan Ramji & Sons Ltd, Dangote Group of Nigeria and Cemtech Ltd, a subsidiary of Sanghi Group of India, are among new entrants in Kenya working to complete their factories while Savanna Cement Ltd and National Cement Company Ltd are increasing their capacity.

Sector analyst Faida Investment Bank said Kenya’s cement production is expected to grow to 11.1 million tonnes per annum by 2017, a 53 per cent growth from 7.25 million tonnes produced last year.
