ETHIOPIA'S PARLIAMENT APPROVES SAHLE-WORK ZEWDE AS FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT

Sahle-Work Zewde, director-general of the United Nations Office at Nairobi, prepares to address delegates attending the first United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) in Nairobi, Kenya June 23, 2014.
ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopia’s parliament has approved senior diplomat Sahle-Work Zewde as the country’s first female president, proceedings on state television showed, cementing another shift in the country’s political system from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Sahle-Work is at present U.N. under-secretary general and special representative of the secretary general to the African Union. She replaces Mulatu Teshome Wirtu, who tendered his resignation to parliament earlier on Wednesday.

The president’s post is a ceremonial one in Ethiopia. The prime minister, who is the head of state, holds executive power.

“In a historic move, the two Houses has elected Ambassador Shalework Zewde as the next President of #Ethiopia. She is the first female head of state in modern Ethiopia,” Fitsum Arega, Abiy’s chief of staff, said on Twitter.

“In a patriarchal society such as ours, the appointment of a female head of state not only sets the standard for the future but also normalises women as decision-makers in public life.”

Last week, when the prime minister reshuffled his cabinet, he appointed 10 female ministers, making Ethiopia the third country in Africa, after Rwanda and Seychelles, to achieve gender parity in their cabinets.

CRDB PLEDGES MORE SUPPORT FOR FINANCIAL INCLUSION DRIVE

The new CRDB Bank chief executive, Mr Abdulmajid Nsekela.
In Summary

The Finance and Planning Minister, Dr Phillip Mpango held discussions with the new chief executive officer for CRDB Bank Plc late last week where he (Dr Mpango) said the government expects the country’s largest lender (by asset size and customers’ deposits) to increase lending to agriculture. He also asked CRDB and the entire banking sector to consider further reductions of interest on loans while cautioning the banking industry against illegal activities such as money laundering.

Dar es Salaam. The new CRDB Bank chief executive, Abdulmajid Nsekela, has pledged full support for the government’s financial inclusion push.

Additionally, he said the lender would implement a comprehensive strategy aimed at contributing more to economic growth and job creation. The promise comes at a time when statistics show that Tanzania’s financial inclusion agenda is doing well, being driven largely by mobile money transactions. However, banked Tanzanians are still below 20 percent of the country’s adult population.

Speaking during a meeting with the Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Philip Mpango, in Dar es Salaam, Mr. Nsekela said CRDB Bank would partner with various government institutions to increase the number of Tanzanians who have access to banking services.

"We have been supporting farmers and the entire agribusiness value chain for years…We support fishing and dairy farming…We have also set a goal to reach all districts by the year 2022. We have tailor-made products that cater for the needs of all segments from the affluent, corporate, small and medium enterprises to the food vendor,” he said.

THE CONCORDE MADE ITS FINAL FLIGHT 15 YEARS AGO AND SUPERSONIC AIR TRAVEL HAS YET TO RECOVER — HERE'S A LOOK BACK AT ITS AWESOME HISTORY

  • British Airways operated its final commercial Concorde flight on October 24, 2003, from New York's JFK International Airport to London Heathrow.
  • It was the last commercial passenger flight for the Concorde in a career that began in 1976.
  • A total of 14 Concordes entered service with British Airways and Air France
  • Co-developed by the British and the French, Concorde was the first and only viable supersonic commercial airliner.
  • The Concorde could cruise at Mach 2.02 or around 1,340 mph at fly comfortably at altitudes of up to 60,000 feet.
For a fleeting thirty years during the 20th century, supersonic commercial air travel was a reality. But on October 24, 2003, that era came to an abrupt end.
That day, British Airways operated its last commercial Concorde service from JFK International Airport to London Heathrow. Air France pulled its Concordes from service a few months earlier. Thus, it would be the Concorde's last ever commercial flight in a career that started in January 1976.
The Anglo-French Concorde was co-developed by BAC, a forerunner of BAE Systems, and Aerospatiale, now a part of Airbus.
The Concorde was never the commercial success for which its creators had hoped. Environmental and operational limitations of the Concorde limited its commercial appeal among airline customers. Only 20 of the planes were ever built and just 14 of them were production aircraft. The Concorde saw service with only two airlines — Air France and British Airways — on just two routes.
However, its lack of commercial success doesn't diminish its role as an icon of modern aviation and as a technological marvel.
In fact, 15 years after its last flight for British Airways, the world is still without a viable form of supersonic passenger service.
Here's a look back at the awesome history of the Aerospatiale-BAC Concorde supersonic airliner:

BANKING IN THE DIGITAL ERA

Charles Mhina, Head of Transactional Products and Services,
Stanbic Bank Tanzania,
Email: MhinaC@stanbic.com
New disruptive technologies are changing the way we do banking in Tanzania and the rest of Africa.

Gone are the days of long queues and waiting times on the phone for simple inquiries such as checking your account balance. The world is firmly entrenched in the digital era not only through innovations in social networks but across all sectors from health to financial services.

The digital revolution began in the late 1950s and has advanced significantly in the 21st century where in the banking sector customers have round-the-clock access to their accounts thanks to the advancements in technology. The change in the way people do their banking has been a game changer that has provided tailor made solutions that cater to the life of the individual.

In Tanzania, the advantages of the digitization have simplified the lives of business owners, employees and customers. Similarly, gone are the days when employees would be issued their salaries in the form of cheques; a direct deposit and notification via sms or email alerts employees that their pay has been credited to their account. Additionally, customers no longer have to carry bags of money when shopping as transacting has been made easier by simply swiping a card which comes with the added advantage of convenience and enhanced security for the customer.

This digital transformation has also improved the service delivery by banks and reduced human error. For instance, the updated Stanbic Bank mobile application addresses the frequent error made by customers when sending money to beneficiaries. Whereas in the past one would have to input the beneficiary’s telephone number, the upgraded app allows one to pick the number directly from the address/phone book, thereby eliminating the chance of inputting a wrong beneficiary number.

ADVOCATING FOR NATIONWIDE CONNECTIVITY/CONNECTING THE UNCONNECTED TANZANIANS – ONE REGION AT A TIME

No matter what part of the world you live in, communication is a vital aspect of everyday life facilitating connection between people. The use of phones has evolved from interactions with friends and family to tools that enable commercial transactions for businesses. In Tanzania, the highest rate of mobile phone penetration is in urban areas however 67.6% of the population resides in rural areas where connectivity remains a challenge.

A Deloitte study of 40 African economies reveals that the introduction of mobile networks has the potential to influence socio-economic development for individuals and villages in remote areas. Additionally, the study shows that 1% increase in market penetration leads to an increase of 0.28 percentage points in GDP and 1% increase in internet penetration increases the GDP growth rate by 0.077 percentage points in the economy.

We live in a world where a person in the southern highlands of Tanzania needs to be able to access breaking news as it happens from his mobile phone and also have the ability to use the same phone to source commercial opportunities in other parts of Tanzania. Without enabling rural access it would take a long time for information to reach people in rural areas thus hindering their progress.

According to FinScope Tanzania 2017, 78% of Tanzanian adults in rural areas have a financial access point within a 5km radius. Due to the limited footprint of traditional bank branches, the majority of financial service providers found within a 5km radius are mobile money agents whose presence facilitate transactions that allow for residents to participate in economic activities that improve their livelihoods. Rural connectivity empowers the lives of those that reside great distances from urban centers.

WHAT TYPE OF UBER RIDER ARE YOU?

Uber recently celebrated it’s 5th year anniversary in Africa. That’s major. For a brand that first launched its operations in Africa in the bustling city of Johannesburg in 2014, Uber is now available in thirteen other cities in Africa, including Tanzania, Lagos, Cape Town, Accra and Nairobi in Sub-Saharan Africa, and Cairo and Alexandria in Egypt, North Africa.

Since making great strides in Africa, one that has remained constant with Uber is its Riders. Driver-partners all over the African continent attest to the fact that they interact with a diverse and unique range of Riders on a daily basis - which makes their time on the app even more interesting!

Each Rider brings their own unique identity and flavour - whether it’s the ones who ride shotgun striking up friendly banter with the driver-partner, or the ones who prefer the backseat to catch up on work, or even the ones who like the radio on… really loud, each one of them continues to contribute to Uber’s exciting journey.

Here are 10 types of Riders you’ll meet on an Uber trip - which of them are you?

The Navigator Pro
This Rider gives maps a run for their money, and is probably one of the driver-partner favourite type of Riders. This Rider knows alternative routes like the back of their hand and is a gem for when the main roads are backed up. With their insights on back-roads and shorter routes, you’ll zip past the traffic and still make that Monday meeting in Dar es Salaam. While driver-partners do have GPS, it’s always appreciated when a rider can provide an uncharted route that is both quick and effective.

The Human Wikipedia
Some Riders prefer sitting in the front with the driver-partners, and these types usually strike up conversations about really interesting things. Like the best place to eat the best curries in Dar es Salaam, or where to get really affordable mechanics in the area. This Rider is a treasure-trove of local information and makes sure that the trip is full of laughs and extremely useful information. Did someone say 5-stars?

The Auxcellent Rider
For some Riders, music defines the trip, and a great track, irrespective of the distance, will make it memorable. Whether it’s jamming to the latest track by Diamond Platnumz or Ali Kiba this type of Rider wants to be in charge of the music on their trip and they often request for an aux cable. The music is usually so good that the driver-partner gets put in the mood for the weekend, whether it’s the weekend or not.
