AngloGold Ashanti's Vice President for Sustainability and Corporate Affairs (Africa), Mr. Simon Shayo (left), leading the U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania, Dr. Michael A. Battle Sr., and the Managing Director of Geita Gold Mining (GGML), Mr. Duan Archery, shortly after the launch event of the GGML Kili Challenge campaign 2024, to raise funds and promote efforts to combat HIV/AIDS in the country. The event took place in Dar es Salaam recently. The campaign is being conducted in collaboration between GGML and the Tanzania Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS).

The U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania, H.E. Michael A. Battle Sr., launched the GGML Kili Challenge 2024 campaign at a fundraising dinner aiming to raise $1 million to support the Tanzanian government's efforts in combating HIV/AIDS. The pledged contributions are expected to be fulfilled by mid-July 2024.

The Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) Kilimanjaro Challenge against HIV/AIDS, established in 2002, is a charitable partnership that brings together the government, through the Tanzania Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS), and GGML to raise funds and promote efforts to fight the disease in the country. One of the most well-known fundraising activities for this cause is the Kili Challenge, which involves climbing and cycling around Mount Kilimanjaro annually. In its 22nd year, the campaign will commence on July 19 and conclude on July 25 this year.

Participants purchase Challenge tickets as part of their fundraising campaign. While some of the fees cover the mountain climbing and cycling expenses, the majority of the funds go into the Kili Trust Fund, which supports the national fight against HIV/AIDS. The Kili Fund is a major contributor to the National AIDS Trust Fund.

Speaking at the launch event in Dar es Salaam recently, the U.S. Ambassador praised GGML and TACAIDS for collaborating on a campaign that assists the government in combating the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country.

"As many of you know, the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, known as PEPFAR, has been a cornerstone in the global fight against HIV/AIDS for over 20 years. Since its inception in 2003, PEPFAR has heavily invested in Tanzania, supporting various projects to control this epidemic and contributing over $7 billion. During this time, we have made significant progress, with over 1.5 million people now receiving life-saving treatment through PEPFAR support. Additionally, we have significantly reduced AIDS-related deaths and new HIV infections.

HUMAN-CENTRIC, HYBRID AI OPENS UP NEW POSSIBILITIES

By Won-joon Choi, EVP & Head of R&D Office, Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics

We are at the beginning of the most exciting, and probably one of the most historic technological moments. The era of mobile AI is here – which Samsung opened up by introducing Galaxy AI features on the Galaxy S24 series, our first AI phone.

Revolutionizing Mobile Experiences with a Hybrid AI Approach

To bring the real-life benefits of generative AI technology to the Galaxy S24 series, we took a hybrid approach to our AI integration. AI offers so many possibilities, and we believe mobile devices are the primary access point for unlocking its potential as users around the globe continue to rely on their phones for most of their day-to-day needs.

The essential role that mobile devices play in everyday life means they are very personal items that people use during many critical and memorable moments. We understand these behaviors and believe smartphones should work harder so that users can truly make the most of important moments in a just simpler, more intuitive, and more epic way. We also recognize the importance of privacy which is why we give users full control over what they share and what they keep private.

We believe our hybrid approach is the most practical and reliable solution to meet all these needs and puts Samsung ahead of the curve. We are providing users with a balance between the instant responsiveness and extra privacy assurance of on-device AI, and the versatility of cloud-based AI through open collaborations with industry-leading partners in offering a variety of functions they need for daily life.

Expanding Possibilities with On-device AI

We made the ‘Live Translate’ feature on-device AI-based, because voice calls are the most basic feature of a smartphone, yet also an intimate and private means of communication. Samsung has committed to empowering users to communicate without language barriers, while at the same time ensuring every communication is safe and private.

GGML: PIONEERING ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP IN THE MINING INDUSTRY

An area in Geita GGML has implemented a comprehensive land rehabilitation programme, planting nearly half a million trees and helping to promote biodiversity and mitigate land degradation.

As the globe marks the World Environment Day (today 5th) with a powerful call to action for the protection of the environment, the day established by the United Nations, serves as a platform to raise awareness about the most pressing environmental challenges we face and inspire us to find solutions.

With this year’s theme: Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience, in Tanzania, where several mining activities are taking place and with their nature, we must ask ourselves how they also take part in protecting the environment.

Taking a case study of Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML), a subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti, it has been making waves in protecting the environment in line with the government directives as also spelled in objectives of World Environment Day.

Shedding light on this, the company’s Senior Manager - Health, Safety and Environment Dr. Kiva Mvungi noted that their dedication to environmental sustainability manifests in a series of well-defined practices and initiatives that have redefined the mining landscape in Tanzania.

He added: “Before acquiring our mining license, we had to comply with all the regulations and prepare policies geared towards environmental protection and sustainability. Additionally, every year as GGML together with other key stakeholders, we prepare budgets for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which must adhere to addressing environmental issues.

ENCOURAGING LOCAL PARTICIPATION: GGML COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE MINING

Deputy Minister of Minerals, Dr. Steven Kiruswa (pictured centre) visited GGML's exhibition stand at the 3rd Local Content Compliance Forum held at the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC) in May 2024. Pictured from left to right with the Minister are Dominic Marandu, GGML's Manager for Learning and Development, Rhoda Lugazia, GGML's Senior Communications Officer, David Nzaligo, GGML's Senior Legal Counsel, and Gilbert Mworia, GGML's Senior Manager (Sustainability).

The Tanzanian government's push for greater local participation in the mining sector has yielded remarkable results, thanks to the Mining Act of 2017/ 2018 and its subsequent amendments in 2019. This landmark legislation prioritises the involvement of Tanzanian companies and individuals, paving the way for a more inclusive and sustainable mining industry.

Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML), a subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti, has emerged as a shining example of responsible mining by wholeheartedly embracing these regulations. The company's commitment to local content goes beyond mere compliance, as evidenced by its active pursuit of opportunities to work with local suppliers, contractors, and service providers.

While the implementation of the Mining Code on Local Content has presented its fair share of challenges, GGML's continued commitment to sustainability and community development has been instrumental in overcoming these hurdles. The company has facilitated increased local content through a number of initiatives, including hosting community forums, workshops and capacity building programmes.

These efforts have enabled local businesses, including youth, women, and people with disabilities, to improve their business acumen and effectively compete for opportunities within GGML's supply chain. As a result, the number of active Geita-based businesses contracting with GGML has increased from 73 in January 2020 to 96 in December 2023, and the value of business awarded to Geita suppliers has increased from 7% of local spending in Q1 2020 to 9.4% in Q4 2023.

ECOBANK CELEBRATES REMARKABLE GROWTH ALIGNED WITH ECOBANK GROUP'S SUCCESS

Ecobank Tanzania Managing Director - Dr. Charles Asiedu as he goes into details of the remarkable financial results of the bank for 2023 and Q1 of 2024.

Dar es Salaam, June 2024 – Ecobank Tanzania proudly announces exceptional growth and significant achievements for Q1 2024 which was a continuation of robust performance of the financial year 2023. The bank attributes its success to the steadfast support of its customers, partners, and employees.

In the first three months of the year, revenues increased by 66% to almost TZS10 billion compared to Q1 2023 following increased lending to support the economy of Tanzania and growing business volumes underscored by customer acceptance of its products. Growing by nearly 5 times compared to Q1 2023, profit before tax was TZS3.5 billion, making the bank among the best performing banks on the market. The profit growth was supported by controlled cost and decreased impairment charge arising from Non-Performing Loans (NPL) ratio consistently being under 3% for the past two years. Operating efficiency continued to improve resulting from widening positive jaws between revenue and cost. Thus, cost to income ratio trended to less than 60% for the first time compared to 77% a year ago. We also returned better to shareholders as annualized return on equity improved to 44% from just 12% in 2023.

These impressive results reflect the increasing customer confidence in our business as deposit grew over the one-year period by 68% to TZS 313 billion influencing assets growth of 27% to TZS 415 billion. On the back of strong growth in deposits, we were able to support our client businesses as we grew our loan book by more than TZS 65 billion to TZS 157 billion from TZS 90 billion.

LEVERAGING TECHNOLOGY FOR A GREENER WORLD

By Samsung Electronics East Africa - Tanzania Country Lead, Manish Jangra.

As the urgency to combat climate change escalates, technology companies are uniquely positioned to drive environmental sustainability. Samsung, a global tech giant, exemplifies this potential through its innovative approaches and commitment to greener practices. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, Samsung is not only transforming the way we live but also paving the way for a more sustainable future.

Samsung Electronics assesses a product’s entire life cycle, including the sourcing, production, distribution, product use and recycling phases. At the production stage, it aims to expand the development and application of recycled materials with a lower carbon footprint. At the distribution stage, it is working to minimize packaging volume and weight to reduce carbon emissions. Through initiatives like improving the energy efficiency of chargers, it is trying to improve the environmental impact at the use stage. This initiative is part of a broader industry trend, with similar companies moving towards more sustainable packaging.

The increasing accumulation of electronic waste (e-waste) across the globe has become a concern for environmentalists and tech stakeholders, prompting campaigns to minimize the production of non-essential electronic accessories. One of the biggest challenges facing the recycling industry in Tanzania is the lack of adequate infrastructure. Many areas lack proper waste management systems, which means that a lot of waste, including plastic waste, ends up in landfills or pollutes the environment.
