GGML: PIONEERING ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP IN THE MINING INDUSTRY

An area in Geita GGML has implemented a comprehensive land rehabilitation programme, planting nearly half a million trees and helping to promote biodiversity and mitigate land degradation.

As the globe marks the World Environment Day (today 5th) with a powerful call to action for the protection of the environment, the day established by the United Nations, serves as a platform to raise awareness about the most pressing environmental challenges we face and inspire us to find solutions.

With this year’s theme: Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience, in Tanzania, where several mining activities are taking place and with their nature, we must ask ourselves how they also take part in protecting the environment.

Taking a case study of Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML), a subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti, it has been making waves in protecting the environment in line with the government directives as also spelled in objectives of World Environment Day.

Shedding light on this, the company’s Senior Manager - Health, Safety and Environment Dr. Kiva Mvungi noted that their dedication to environmental sustainability manifests in a series of well-defined practices and initiatives that have redefined the mining landscape in Tanzania.

He added: “Before acquiring our mining license, we had to comply with all the regulations and prepare policies geared towards environmental protection and sustainability. Additionally, every year as GGML together with other key stakeholders, we prepare budgets for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which must adhere to addressing environmental issues.

Environmental rehabilitation

Recognising the impact of mining on the land, the company has been implementing comprehensive land rehabilitation programmes, which involve progressive reclamation efforts during the mining process, with a focus on reforestation and soil improvement. For instance, in collaboration with local communities, the company has planted about 473,000 trees, thereby promoting biodiversity and mitigating land degradation.

Water Management

GGML implements a rigorous water management strategy, optimising water usage throughout their operations. One of the company’s most notable projects is the In Situ Water Remediation initiative, which uses naturally occurring bacteria to remediate sulphate in groundwater.

This innovative approach helps to maintain the quality of groundwater, which is essential for both the ecosystem and local communities. Again, as the company’s operations require the use of a significant amount of heavy machinery and equipment using oil, which can mix with water during the mining process, it forces the application of the Drizit Oil Water Separator that is a responsible method of waste management and safeguards the health of wildlife and local communities.

Community Engagement

GGML proactively engages with local communities, fostering a sense of shared responsibility for environmental protection. The company's education programmes and collaborative initiatives empower residents to become active stewards of their environment.

GGML's land rehabilitation programme has demonstrably reduced the company's environmental footprint. The restored land provides habitat for wildlife, prevents soil erosion, and contributes to improved air and water quality. These efforts have been recognised by the Ministry of Minerals and always citing it as a leading exemplary sustainable mining company for their environmental stewardship.

Industry recognition

GGML's innovative practices have not gone unnoticed within the mining industry. They have been featured in industry publications for their leadership in sustainable mining practices and have been awarded the Best Company for its focus on environmental protection and occupational health and safety at the Tanzania Mining & Investment Forum in 2023.

Employee wellbeing

GGML's commitment to environmental safety has resulted in a decrease in workplace injuries and accidents, fostering a safer and healthier work environment for employees.

Community development

The company’s community initiatives have improved the quality of life for many in the local Geita community, especially in areas education, healthcare, and infrastructure developments.

Industry and stakeholder perspective

Commenting on this, Simon Shayo, Vice President of Sustainability & Corporate Affairs (Africa) at AngloGold Ashanti, of which Geita Gold Mining Limited is a subsidiary of the company said that as the demand for minerals continues to grow, sustainable mining practices will become increasingly important and not only contribute to environmental protection but also ensure long-term profitability and social responsibility.

Legacy of sustainability

GGML's approach to environmental protection, coupled with their unwavering commitment to community engagement, demonstrate that responsible mining practices are not only possible, but essential for a sustainable future.

Here, the company’s legacy extends far beyond its gold production. They have established a new standard for environmental stewardship, inspiring others to embrace a future where economic prosperity and environmental well-being go hand-in-hand. As we observe World Environment Day, GGML serves as a powerful reminder that even within the most resource-intensive industries, innovation and dedication can pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable tomorrow.
