Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, continues to build its presence in Africa through a new codeshare agreement with kulula, South Africa’s award-winning low cost carrier.

The codeshare deal offers Etihad Airways customers flight options to a number of key cities in South Africa that include Cape Town, Durban, George and East London via Johannesburg.

Etihad Airways will place its EY code on kulula’s scheduled flights between Johannesburg and these popular coastal cities. This agreement allows guests access to through-check-in and baggage transfer to their final destination.

FASTJET will today start flying an Embraer E190 on domestic routes as it begins transitioning its Airbus A319 fleet to Embraer airplanes in line with its long term operational and financial stability strategy.

The firm’s country General Manager, Mr John Corse, told reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday that switching to a small aircraft, which uses less fuel and has a better maintenance interval, was a key part of the airline’s turnaround strategy.

PRESIDENT Joseph Kabila of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has expressed his admiration for the state of peace enjoyed by Tanzania and praised successive country’s presidents over the feat.

“My country is very big and rich, but we lack peace in some parts; I wish that DRC will become peaceful like Tanzania one day,” President Kabila said on Tuesday at the state banquet hosted for him by President John Magufuli.

Kenya is expected to finally sign a deal paving the way for setting up of a Sh3 billion regional headquarters of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in Nairobi.

The country risks losing out to Ethiopia in the race to host the regional headquarters of the multilateral lender over a diplomatic row.

At the centre of the row is delay in granting the multilateral lender and its staff diplomatic status, a condition Ethiopia is said to have agreed to making Addis Ababa a formidable contender against Nairobi.

Afreximbank had indicated it would move to Addis if Kenya does not grant it diplomatic status by the end of last month.

BARCLAYS SELLS EGYPTIAN BUSINESS TO MOROCCO'S ATTIJARIWAFA BANK

Oct 4 - Britain's Barclays has completed the sale of its Egyptian business to Morocco's Attijariwafa Bank as part of its shift towards focusing on the United States and Britain.

The sale will mean a cut of about 2 billion pounds ($2.55 billion) in Barclays' risk-weighted assets, it said on Tuesday, boosting the bank's core capital ratio by about 0.1 percent.

Barclays did not give a price for the transaction, although sources previously told Reuters they valued the business at around $400 million.

The London-based lender is seeking to sell its African operations as part of a plan by Chief Executive Jes Staley to simplify its structure and improve shareholder returns.

CBA Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Ngunze said the service will leverage on the same advantages it has over other banking channels to record success in Rwanda as it has done in the three African countries.

KENYA DEPOSITORS PILE PRESSURE ON EX-IMPERIAL BANK DIRECTORS

Pressure on Tuesday continued to pile on directors of the fallen Imperial Bank after depositors sought to be enjoined in a new suit in which the directors face a freeze on their assets in a bid to recover a Sh45 billion loss that sent the lender into receivership.

Through lawyer Josephine Kogweno, the depositors say the orders sought in the suit “will affect them directly as account holders and depositors at Imperial Bank Limited”.

“The depositors and their families are already suffering due to the illegalities at the said bank,” an affidavit presented yesterday at the High Court reads.

The case has been re-allocated to a new judge, as the former proceeds on leave, and will be mentioned this morning for directions.

TWIGA BANCORP POSTS 869M/- PROFIT IN FIRST HALF OF 2016

Twiga Bancorp has posted a net profit of 869m/- in the first half of this year, thanks to turnaround strategies that have helped the bank to snap a five year loss trend.

The bank Chief Executive Officer, Mr Cosmas Kimario said the first half of the year profit was the first in five years time since 2010 and had revived hopes of promising prospects for the bank.

“We have changed our strategies and our projections for the next five years are promising,” Mr Kimario told Daily News on Monday after the launch of a Kariakoo branch of the bank in Dar es Salaam.

“This year we are targeting to make a profit of 3.0bn/- and prospects are pointing toward meeting the goal,” he said. The bank, with around 150 workforce, assets are hovering at 110bn/- and customers deposits are also around the same level as assets.

Ilemela District Commissioner, Dr. Leonard Masale opens a package of maize seeds to launch a new insurance scheme for crops dubbed 'Airtel Money Linda Mbegu Yako' in Mwanza yesterday. The new insurance product is supported by Airtel, ACRE, SeedCo and UAP insurance company.

Farmers in Mwanza, Kagera Shinyanga and Mara regions will start benefiting from a new insurance scheme which will refund them the cost of buying maize seeds if they fail to grow due to unfavourable weather.

Dubbed as ‘Linda Mbegu’, the new product is a crop insurance which will ensure that in the event of rainfall failures the farmer will get the equivalent of the number of bags of seeds they purchased replaced enabling them to replant in the next season.

The free crop insurance service jointly launched here on Monday by Airtel Company, Acre Africa, Seed Co and UAP Insurance Tanzania will require a farmer to enter the special card number found inside the seed bag to ensure their seeds are insured for 21 days upon activation.

Trade volumes between Tanzania and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have significantly surged from 23.1 billion/- in 2009 to 393.6 billion/- last year with the latter pledging to continue using the Dar es Salaam Port for transportation of its imports and exports.

It is against the backdrop of the booming business that the government, through the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), has extended the grace period for DRC-destined cargo from 14 to 30 days in which cargo at the port will be exempted from storage charges.

“Almost 50 per cent of our businesses in Eastern DRC are conducted through the Dar es Salaam Port and we will continue using the facility.

The Government of Congo is equally happy that some challenges faced the harbour in past years have been solved in recent months,” DRC President Joseph Kabila assured President John Magufuli in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

Stanbic Bank Tanzania has been crowned the best custodian bank in Tanzania by Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) for the role the financial institution plays in safeguarding assets of institutional and individual investors at the bourse.

Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner (RC) Paul Makonda has urged public institutions to make use of the Tanzania Telecommunication Company Limited (TTCL) products to make it grow and contribute to robust telecom sector.

Mr Makonda said in Dar es Salaam on Monday at the launch of the TTCL customer services week he will begin by persuading all public institutions working under his authority as way of supporting government efforts to make TTCL market leader. He said also the use of the various TTCL services is a way of giving support to the government initiative to repossess telecom firm by 100 per cent.

“I call upon all public enterprises that owe the TTCL to clear their outstanding debts before taking legal measures. The telecom firm will continue offering high quality services if customers pay debts on time,” he said.

Police in Dar es Salaam Special Zone, through the traffic unit, has collected 464,790,000/- from fines spanning over 15,493 traffic offences in five days.

The Dar es Salaam Special Zone Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Simon Sirro, said the money was collected from September 27 to October 2 in various areas in the city as the country was marking the Road Safety Week.

According to him, the 14,006 seized vehicles include 1,487 motorcycles, 4,765 commuter buses and 9,241 private cars and lorries. “There are some of motorcyclists, who have already appeared in court for not wearing helmets and carrying more than one passenger,” he told reporters.

The zonal police chief observed that road safety was still a serious problem in the country and urged all road users not to ignore road safety regulations to avoid accidents.

Meanwhile, Mr Sirro said police are holding for interrogation a suspected hardcore bandit identified as Musa Katela alias Ferrali (36) for allegedly possessing a gun and his involvement in separate armed robbery in the city.

FASTJET SELLS ONLY OWNED AIRCRAFT TO RAISE $8 MILLION

Struggling African low cost carrier Fastjet is raising 8 million US dollars by selling its only wholly-owned aircraft.

Fastjet Chief Executive Nico Bezuidenhout said, in a statement that “The sale of our Airbus A319 is an important step in our stabilisation plan and our move towards a more appropriate size of fleet.

“Its early days but the plan is progressing well and the money raised from this sale will be used to drive its continued implementation,” he said. The disposal of the Airbus A319 is part of a fleet reduction plan as it moves to smaller aircraft on short term leases.

“The use of proceeds will be utilised as working capital for the implementation of Fastjet’s stabilisation plan as outlined in the company’s interim results announcement,” he said.

ARUSHA RESIDENT LOSES 4-YEAR SAVINGS VIA PRIMITIVE STORAGE

Chaos marred the construction site at Mianzini area here as people scrambled for the bundles of bank notes, which the excavators uncovered from underground.

From the underground bunker, the excavators had retrieved wads of cash amounting to about 35m/- during the demolition of buildings in the ongoing construction works to expand and upgrade the Mianzini – Ikiding’a road.

The money was uncovered from the underground chamber inside one of the houses whose walls were demolished. The house belongs to Mr Christopher Akonaay, a farmer who has reportedly been storing his hard earned cash in the trench on monthly installments for the past seven years.

The livestock keeper, endowed with a large herd of cattle, supplies milk to many families and institutions around Arusha City and its suburbs, earning up to 1.5m/- monthly. Mr Akonaay was away selling milk in town, when the excavators struck the area.

The houses had previously earmarked for demolition to pave way for the road construction project but the residents in the area rushed to file a case in court last June, protesting against the move.

When the court ruling came out in favour of the government, the graders did not wait for the property owners to file another suit, but proceeded to knock down the walls.

TWIGA BANCORP ENTERS KARIAKOO WITH A BANG

Twiga Bancorp Bank has opened a new branch at the business bustling Kariakoo area, realising 8bn/- in customer deposits within just two days.

“We have brought the banking services close to our customers and they have indeed embraced the bank,” said the bank’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Cosmas Kimario,in Dar es Salaam yesterday, noting however that some of the deposits were transferred from the city branch.

“We expect this branch to contribute 25 per cent of the bank’s total revenues…and, signs are pointing to a bright future,” said Mr Kimario at the soft opening of the branch yesterday.

The branch, at the junction of Likoma and Aggrey Streets, has four teller counters, with each teller capable of completing a transaction within three minutes, translating into 20 transactions per hour and 120 a day.

President John Magufuli yesterday invited Cuban investors to develop pharmaceutical industries in the country as the two friendly nations agreed to cooperate in five areas.

Dr Magufuli asked the visiting Cuban Vice President, Mr Salvador Valdes Mesa, to help in persuading the Cuban investors to Tanzania, saying the establishment of pharmaceutical industries in the country will guarantee drug availability at affordable prices.

He also asked Mr Mesa to influence Cuban investors to Tanzania’s sugar sector, promising the government inclination to offer them land for production and guarantee all necessary support.

“I understand that Cuba is advanced in both sugar and medicine production, I therefore ask you to convince investors from your country to consider investing in Tanzania... the government will offer them full cooperation,” said Dr Magufuli.

VODACOM REFUTES CLAIMS ABOUT M-PESA SERVICE

Vodacom has refuted claims circulating in social media and online platforms that hackers are withdrawing money from M-Pesa without the concent of owners.

The mobile phone company said in a statement that the claims are false aiming at frustrating M-Pesa customers and damage the image of the company.

“The circulating message, that aims at misleading our customers and general public...Vodacom warns its over 9 million M-Pesa customers against acting upon this unscrupulous message (and any others like it) for it has not originated from the Company, the statement reads in part.

According to the statement, the claims indicate that hackers are at work withdrawing money from individuals’ M-Pesa Accounts without the account owners’ consent. “We urge our customers to confidently continue using our M-Pesa services and to contact our Call Centre whenever they need assistance.

The DSE Members’ Awards is an initiative by the DSE whose objective is to recognize and award members of the DSE that have demonstrated and excelled in areas of: good corporate governance; investor protection; sustainable growth of their businesses; engagement with investors and the public, as well as good fundamental performance and corporate social responsibilities.

DSE Members Awards (2016) had focused on identifying a single winner in each of the following categories:

1. Best Listed Company of the Year in the Main Investment Market (MIM) segment;
2. Best Listed Company of the Year in the Enterprise Growth Market (EGM)segment;
3. Best Stock Broker of the Year;
4. Best Custodian of the Year;
5. Best Digital Media of the Year for Reporting Financial News; and
6. Best Print Media of the Year for Reporting Financial News.

The qualifying participants under the first four (4) categories are members of the DSE who have been operational for the whole of the year 2015. The other two categories were media houses that provided consistent coverage of news related to financial markets and more specifically for the last year 2015.

Dar es Salaam - A soft drinks bottling company SBC Tanzania Limited has handed over Sh. 50 million to Prime Minister, Kassim Majaliwa in support of the government's efforts to help the needy victims and survivors of the September 10, 2016 earthquake in Kagera which killed 17 people and injured hundred.

The company which is commonly known as Pepsi donated the funds as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility. Being part of the Tanzanian community, which has for years been supporting our business, we feel obliged to give our support in return through social development as well as when such bad moments come" The SBC Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Avinash Jha said.

Benki ya Posta Tanzania (TPB) imetoa mchango wa madawati na viti 50 vyote vikiwa na thamani ya shilingi Milioni Nane kwa Shule ya Sekondari ya Ikoma, iliyopo Wilayani Serengeti Mkoani Mara. Mchango huo wa madawati ulikabidhiwa kwa Mkuu wa Wilaya ya Serengeti Nurdin Babu na Afisa Mtendaji Mkuu wa (TPB) Sabasaba Moshingi, kwenye hafla fupi iliyofanyika shuleni hapo.

Akizungumza wakati wa makabidhiano hayo, Sabasaba Moshingi alisema kuwa benki yake imeamua kutoa viti pamoja na madawati hayo ili kuhakikisha kuwa wanafunzi wote watakaoanza kutumia shule hiyo hapo mwakani watakaa kwenye mazingira mazuri yanayofaa. Pia alitoa pongezi nyingi kwa uongozi wa Kijiji hicho cha Ikoma kwa bidii zao zilizohakikisha kuwa wanakamilisha ujenzi wa madarasa pamoja na maabara, tayari kwa kupokea wanafunzi mwaka ujao. DAR RESIDENTS TO ENJOY FREE WI-FI IN PUBLIC, RECREATIONAL AREAS

Vice - President Samia Suluhu Hassan has launched a project of installing Wi-Fi services in public and recreational places in Dar es Salaam at the weekend.

The implementation of the project by the Tanzania Telecommunication Company Limited (TTCL) will expand communication services to reach more people and boost economic growth.

Vice-President commended TTCL for executing the project of making internet services reliable to the bigger part of the city particularly in public and recreational places.

“I commend you for making this project a reality... and hope with planting of trees in different parts of the city including recreational places, people will get access into internet services,” she said.

On his part, the Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner (RC) Mr Paul Makonda said the project is one of the fifth phase government efforts to improve various services, in particular communication and internet services to all.

NIC GETS NEW BOARD CHAIRPERSON

President John Magufuli has appointed Mr. Laston Thomas the new chairperson of National Insurance Corporation’s (NIC) Board of Directors.

Mr Thomas fills the position left vacant by Dr Edmund Mndolwa whose term of service had expired.

According to statement issued by the Directorate of Presidential Communication, the appointment of Mr Thomas was with effect from yesterday.

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, has reinforced its support to Tanzania's Education sector

At a handover ceremony co-hosted by the Chinese Embassy and Huawei Tanzania, the company announced that Seeds for the future, its flagship CSR program, will benefit another 10 students from Tanzania in 2017, and Huawei will donate 60 million shillings to support the government to repair some of the affected schools in Kagera region, where a terrible earthquake happened earlier this month.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Kassim Majaliwa, the Prime Minister for Tanzania, commended Huawei for cultivating ICT talents for Tanzania, and being a responsible corporate citizen.

SAMSUNG TO RESUME S. KOREA SALES OF NEW NOTE 7 PHONES

SEOUL (AFP) - Samsung said Thursday it would resume sales of new Galaxy Note 7 smartphones in South Korea this week, hoping to turn the page on the troubled device after an ongoing global recall prompted by battery explosions.

The company on September 2 suspended sales of the oversized "phablet" and recalled 2.5 million units shipped worldwide after faulty batteries caused the phones to explode while charging.

With the recall underway in 10 nations where the device had been launched, 60 percent of users in Samsung's key market, the US, had swapped their handsets for replacements provided by the company, as of Tuesday.

Eighty percent of Note 7 customers are expected to complete the exchange this week in South Korea, where sales of new phones equipped with fault-free batteries will resume on Saturday, Samsung said in a statement.

TANZANIAN ECONOMY POSTS 6.7 PC GROWTH IN 2016 FIRST HALF

The economy grew 6.7 per cent in the first half of 2016 compared to 5.7 per cent of the corresponding period last year boosted by fast growth in transportation, mining and gas and communication sectors.

The Bank of Tanzania Governor, Prof. Benno Ndulu told reporters in Dar es Salaam today that the growth rate of the second quarter in 2016 which reached 7.9 per cent had offset the dismal performance in the first quarter of 5.8 per cent and put the nation firmly on course to meet growth targets of 7.2 per cent for 2016.

“It is obvious that we are on track to meet the growth target of 7.2 per cent putting in mind July to December is the period of exports of main cash crops and it when tourism season reaches its peak,” he said.

Exports of main cash crops and tourism receipts would add to projections of huge expansion in construction sector on the back of huge infrastructure projects including construction of the standard gauge railway line, Uganda oil pipeline and ports expansion.

The National Bureau of Statistics announced on Thursday that the economy had expanded 7.9 per cent in the second quarter of 2016 compared to 5.8 per cent during the same time last year driven by mining, manufacturing and energy sectors.
