PRESIDENT JAKAYA KIKWETE UNDERGOES SURGERY IN U.S.A.

President Jakaya Kikwete chats with Tanzania's ambassador to the US Liberata Mulamula who paid him a visit at the Johns Hopkins Hospital after surgery Sunday.

Dar es Salaam. President Jakaya Kikwete has been successfully operated on in the United States, Ikulu announced yesterday.
An official a statement issued by the Directorate of Presidential Communication said the Head of State had underwent a prostate surgery at the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
Mr Kikwete left the country on Thursday evening for the US for what his handlers said was a medical check-up. The operation under specialist doctors was carried out on Saturday and lasted one and a half hours.
The State House said medical experts who checked the President recommended a surgery.

WHY EMIRATES LAUNCHED A SECOND SERVICE TO DAR ES SALAAM

QUESTION: First, what principally motivated and prompted you to start the second service to Dar es Salaam?
ANSWER: Our services have gone from strength to strength over the years and for the last 17 years we have operated in this market, we have seen demand for our services growing. This has necessitated the introduction of additional five weekly flights out of Dar es Salaam, which means we now offer our customers more choice and convenience from Tanzania to Dubai and Europe, the Middle East, the United States, the Indian sub-continent, Australasia and the Far East.
Through the second service to Dar es Salaam, Emirates will be able to connect even more people and cargo with Tanzania. Could you briefly outline the size of cargo and number of passengers carried by Emirates on the Tanzanian route?
In our last financial year we carried over 180,000 customers on the route and an average of 6,600 tonnes of cargo. It’s important to note that Emirates is the only facility that carries fresh chilled meat out of Tanzania to Gulf Cooperation Council countries and approximately we carry 100 tonnes per month on the Dar es Salaam–Dubai route.
How do the figures above compare with last year’s and when the carrier started flying to the country?
Emirates started a twice weekly service between Dubai and Dar es Salaam linked with Nairobi on October 28, 1997 using Airbus A310-300. Following steady growth and demand on the route over the years, the frequency and capacity was increased and the flight was delinked from Nairobi, becoming a daily non-stop service between Dubai and Dar es Salaam in 2006.

WE'RE FACING THREATS OVER IPTL, ZITTO KABWE

PAC Chairman, Zitto Kabwe.

Dar es Salaam. Members of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) claim they are being intimidated by powerful politicians with vested interest in the Tegeta escrow account saga.
According to a statement released yesterday by PAC chairman Zitto Kabwe, the hate messages aimed at mudslinging and preventing the committee from tabling a report by the Controller and Auditor General on the controversy are being circulated among MPs and the general public through social media.
The committee’s report scheduled for tabling at the end of this month is poised to shed light on what transpired in the withdrawal of $122 million (Sh207 billion) from the Tegeta escrow account to purportedly pay for the sale of IPTL to a private company.
Even though the content of the report has not been made public, insiders say the investigation is likely to send shock waves within the corridors of power owing to the positions of those implicated in the controversial deal.

TANZANIA'S MARKETING PLAN TO BOOST TOURISM

Tanzania's Natural Resources and Tourism Minister, Lazaro Nyalandu.

Tanzania is developing a contingency plan to restore confidence in the tourism sector due to the threat of Ebola.
The outbreak of deadly Ebola in West Africa has put the country’s $1.9 million tourism sector under renewed pressure.
Tourism, a major foreign currency earner — surpassing gold — had begun to recover from the shocks of 2008’s global financial crisis, which almost brought the sector to its knees.
Key industry players say tourist arrivals in Tanzania have dropped by 25 per cent, despite the country being almost 5,600km away from the Ebola-stricken countries of West Africa.

STANBIC BANK UGANDA BETS BIG ON YUAN-BASED PRODUCTS

Stanbic Bank Tower, Kampala, Uganda.

Stanbic Uganda’s new package of yuan transactional products has raised the stakes among local lenders in the battle for a stake in trade between Uganda and China.
The listed bank joined the exclusive club of local lenders offering yuan transactional products.
The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) currently owns 21 per cent shares in Standard Bank Group of South Africa, a strategic position that has created numerous synergies in areas of trade, investment and financial trading operations.
Through this partnership, ICBC will offer settlement services for foreign exchange transactions between the Uganda shilling and the yuan.
Standard Chartered Uganda rolled out yuan business products in 2010.

TANZANIA, KENYA TO LINK THEIR POWER GRIDS

Tanzania is planning to construct a 400kV power transmission line that will interconnect its national power grid with Kenya’s.
The transmission line will start from Namanga to Singida through Arusha and Manyara up to Isinya in Kenya.
Project manager Khalid James said the project will cost Tanzania Tsh379.9 billion ($228 million).
The project will interconnect Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya.
“The interconnection with Kenya will help deal with power fluctuations. When we have excess power we can supply Kenya and vice versa,” he said.
Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2015 and end in 2016.
The plan also involves upgrading the Singida substation to 400kV and supply electricity to villages along the transmission line.

ANTI-POACHING REPORT POINT AN ACCUSING FINGER AT CHINESE DIPLOMATS IN DAR ES SALAAM

Both governments dismiss as baseless conservation agency’s report that says crooks used visit by Chinese president to smuggle ivory out of Tanzania.

Tanzania is once again on the spot over poaching after a new report accused Chinese diplomats of smuggling ivory out of the country using the presidential plane during a state visit by their president.
The report by the London-based Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) has angered the Tanzanian government, which reads mischief in it.
The government reacted by accusing the West of trying to “spoil the good relationship” between Tanzania and China. Foreign Minister Bernard Membe told parliament the sources of information quoted in the report were questionable, and that the agency had no proof.
According to EIA, the ivory was bought during the weeks leading up to the visit by President Xi Jinping in March 2013. It adds that ivory had been smuggled out of Tanzania in a similar manner during other high-level visits since 2010.

FINANCIAL CRISIS REPEAT COULD FORCE BANK OF ENGLAND TO BAIL OUT MARKETS

A repeat of the 2008 financial crisis could require the Bank of England to rescue trillion-dollar financial markets because business lending has shifted away from traditional banks, the BoE governor Mark Carney has said.
Speaking at a gathering of central bankers in Paris on Friday, Carney said a structural shift away from bank lending meant markets for bonds and derivatives could come under pressure in a repeat of the crisis and could need the support of central bank funds.
Tighter regulations imposed on banks had raised lending costs and encouraged businesses to seek loans from other sources, he said. But while reducing the dominance of bank lending was a positive step, it could mean Threadneedle Street extending its sphere of influence to protect financial markets from collapse.

JPMORGAN TO CUT 3,000 MORE RETAIL BANKING JOBS

(Reuters) - JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N), the largest U.S. bank by assets, said it would cut 3,000 more jobs than previously expected in its retail banking division.
The bank said it would reduce 4,000 jobs in its card, merchant services and auto unit, up from the 2,000 previously announced. The bank is also cutting 7,000 jobs in its mortgage banking unit, up from 6,000.
JPMorgan will have eliminated 27,000 jobs by the year-end from its consumer bank unit over two years, even after additions for more risk controls and regulatory compliance.
Some 18,000 jobs will have been taken out of mortgage banking, where the company has less work to do refinancing loans and handling troubled mortgages left from the financial crisis.

BURGER KING TESTS INDIA WATERS, STARTS WITH 12 OUTLETS

(Reuters) - U.S. fast food chain Burger King Worldwide (BKW.N) will open about 12 outlets in India over the next 60-90 days, Rajeev Varman, chief executive of the hamburger chain's India unit said on Saturday.

The chain announced last year a tie-up with the Everstone Group to develop the Burger King brand presence in the country. In India, the hamburger chain has changed its menu to sell mutton, chicken and veggie sandwiches.

"In the long run, India is going to be one of the largest markets globally. Burger King most certainly sees India as one of the biggest opportunities in the future," Varman said ahead of the chain's first store opening in New Delhi.

Burger King is a late entrant in the country. Rival McDonald's Corp (MCD.N) has been around for close to two decades and has already grown its network in tier two and three cities.

"Turkey, China and Russia are each growing by around 100 restaurants a year. Here in India, we will set up our first few restaurants and use that to fine-tune our operating model before determining our growth plans," Varman said in an email.

WHY EAST AFRICAN CURRENCIES ARE STEADILY LOSING GROUND

Bank of Tanzania (BoT) Governor Benno Ndulu told The Citizen that the US dollar has strengthened against all major currencies, largely because the US economy has shown exceptional rapid growth while Europe is struggling.

Dar es Salaam. The global appreciation of the United States dollar--fuelled by exceptionally rapid growth in the world’s largest economy amid challenges in the Euro Zone--is sending shock waves across East Africa, holding the region’s currencies captive, The Citizen has learnt.
The Kenyan, Ugandan and Tanzanian shillings have continuously depreciated against the vehicle currency in the past 10 months, turning East Africans into mere spectators as the world enjoys massive reductions in oil prices.
The Tanzanian shilling shed six per cent in the past 10 months to trade at an average of Sh1,676 against the US dollar as of Tuesday this week. In December 2013, $1 was equivalent to an average of Sh1,581.

TANZANIA GOVERNMENT FURY OVER CLAIMS OF ILLEGAL DEALS IN IVORY

Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation minister Bernard Membe. He expressed the government’s dismay over reports about ivory export in diplomatic bags.

Dodoma. The government has dismissed as blatant lies claims in local and international media that members of last year’s Chinese presidential delegation illegally bought and exported ivory. Top officials said the reports were driven by jealousy.
Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation minister Bernard Membe said on television that reports that President Xi Jinping’s plane was used to ferry the ivory were “baseless and fabricated”.
The report was aimed at tarnishing the image of the country and disrupting diplomatic relations between Tanzania and China, Mr Membe added.
On Wednesday, various international media outlets quoted a report by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA)--a non-governmental organisation--saying that Chinese diplomatic and military staff bought illegal ivory when President Jinping’s entourage of government officials and business leaders arrived in Tanzania in March 2013.

INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS INVITED TO FIRST EVER HOSPITALITY CONFERENCE IN TANZANIA

The first Hospitality Roundtable will bring together leading hotel brands, hoteliers, suppliers, buyers, investors, and cross sector service providers to establish a clear dialogue on the state of the industry and to secure future growth. The Conference will be held at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre in Dar es Salaam Tanzania on November 10-11, 2014.
Over the next few decades, Sub Saharan Africa is expected to undergo profound economical change. The conference will bring together regional and industry experts to allow exploration of business opportunities, find new business partners and gain invaluable industry knowledge to help their business succeed. More importantly, delegates will be able to see how they, as stakeholders, can align their services and be part of this growth.  With the potential to lead to national economic development, the hospitality industry is hoped to seize this opportunity to catalyze  growth and become a leading region that the world will recognize.

" With international and domestic investors recognizing the rich potential in Tanzania, it really is the time for us all to discuss how Tanzania can best foster a sustainable hospitality industry, build lasting and mutually beneficial partnerships, and build a pipeline for success” said conference organizer and international hospitality expert Meelis Kuuskler. “The hospitality and tourism industry is poised to grow at unprecedented rates. But, this development can only materialize if stakeholders can build a sturdy ecosystem to facilitate its sustained growth. With communication, innovation, and a coordinated planning effort, we can build on the solid foundation that East Africa has already established.”

The conference programme will introduce several new and exciting sessions with themes that include: Current state of the industry, Supply Chain and Sourcing, Recruitment, training, and Retention of Human Resources, Revenue in food and beverage, new Technology that can support hospitality developments and operations. If Tanzania and East Africa are to benefit from this industry, it is important for all stakeholders to be proactive and keep abreast of current trends and advancements.

The hospitality industry requires consistent delivery of products and services that meet guest expectations. Delivering consistent and quality service is one of the major challenges that the hospitality industry faces. Considering issues such as procurement, staffing, and strategies for growth, the 2-day conference will allow delegates to consider new ways of ensuring their business remains competitive.
Keynote messages and panel discussions will include presentations from domestic and international experts in hospitality, who will be sharing their views on how to secure the healthy growth of the industry in Tanzania. Suppliers and showcase providers are coming from around the world to present their products to the industry. This represents a major shift in business as usual, as the roundtable introduces hospitality suppliers to the industry, suppliers who can directly support overall growth and success.
One of the fundamental issues affecting the growth of the hospitality sector is that of Human Resources.  "The challenge we need to address in the hotel industry as far as human resources is training and  development of employees . In order to equip the employees with the necessary skills, companies should adopt a proactive approach when it comes to training. Training should be continuous, consistent  and relevant to the industry needs"  said Mr Damas Mfugale, CEO of Peacock Hotels.

"The Hospitality Roundtable comes at a time when Africa is facing a lot of challenges mainly because of both intentional and unintentional misrepresentation of its facts on international media which unfortunately influences decisions of individual tourists.

I am of opinion that this forum will be a good platform to disseminate truth and facts on Africa and Tanzania in particular and will bring invaluable experience sharing amongst stakeholders at a time when there is need to do so more than ever before."
said Mr Sirili Akko, CEO of Tanzania Association of Tour Operators.

Entrance to the conference is free to all East African Nationals.
