VODACOM LAUNCHES VISION 2030, INVESTS OVER $100M IN TECH INFRASTRUCTURE MODERNIZATION

Philip Besiimire, Managing Director of Vodacom Tanzania.

Dar es Salaam, 14 September 2025 – As Vodacom Tanzania celebrates 25 years of service to the nation, the company has unveiled one of the largest infrastructure investments in its history: a technology modernization program worth over $100 million. This bold initiative aims to transform connectivity, elevate service quality, and accelerate digital inclusion across both urban centers and underserved rural communities—supporting national growth for the next 25 years and beyond.

The program will upgrade thousands of network sites nationwide and introduce cutting-edge enhancements to the company’s IT infrastructure, including the M-Pesa platform. Customers can expect faster data speeds, improved call quality, more stable M-Pesa services, and enhanced cybersecurity—direct responses to the needs of Vodacom’s growing user base, now numbering in the tens of millions.

“Our journey to Vision 2030 has officially begun,” said Philip Besiimire, Managing Director of Vodacom Tanzania“With this investment, we are laying the groundwork for the next five years and beyond—empowering people through better access, protecting the planet through greener technologies, and maintaining the trust of our customers, partners, and investors. To date, over 1,000 network sites have already been upgraded across the Lake Zone, Southern Highlands, and parts of Central Tanzania.”

Aligning With National and Global Goals

Vodacom Tanzania’s Vision 2030 places people, planet, and trust at the core of every decision. The modernization program aligns closely with Tanzania’s national digital transformation agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In line with its Net Zero 2035 ambition, Vodacom’s new infrastructure will cut power consumption by up to 30%, using energy-efficient technologies that also improve network performance and coverage. This strengthens the company’s ESG commitments while ensuring that high-quality digital access reaches even the most remote areas.

Cutting-Edge Technology for a Greener Future

According to Andrew Lupembe, Vodacom’s Network Director, the upgrades will significantly expand 4G coverage and enhance overall connectivity.

“This upgrade involves the latest technology and will significantly expand 4G coverage, ensuring faster internet speeds and improved connectivity wherever Vodacom is available. We are going greener with Huawei’s industry-leading ‘zero-bit-zero (0 bit 0) watt’ technology, which dramatically improves power efficiency while reducing carbon emissions. At the same time, we are optimizing tower space with multi-band radio technology, accommodating multiple spectrums in one radio and combining several frequency bands in a single antenna,” he explained.

Driving Digital Inclusion and Innovation

As Tanzania’s digital economy rapidly grows, Vodacom continues to strengthen its role as an enabler of opportunity—accelerating digital and financial inclusion, catalyzing innovation, and investing in infrastructure that connects every Tanzanian to the digital future.
