Dar es Salaam; Januari 31, 2020 - Benki ya biashara ya DCB (DCB Commercial Bank Plc) imetangaza kupata faida ya shilingi bilioni 2.3katika mwaka 2019, ikiwakilisha ongezeko la asilimia 43kutoka faida ya mwaka 2018 ambayo ilikuwa shilingi bilioni 1.6.
Katika taarifa iliyotolewa kwa vyombo mbalimbali vya habari leo tarehe 31 Januari 2020 na iliyochapishwa katika magazeti kwa mujibu wa sharia za benki kuu, utendaji wa benki umeendelea kuimarika ikilinganishwa na mwaka uliotangulia huku ufanisi katika nyanja zote muhimu ukiongezeka kwa kiwango cha kuridhisha.
Akiwakilisha taarifa za fedha za robo ya nne ya mwaka 2019, mkurugenzi wa Fedha wa benki ya DCB Ndugu Zacharia Kapama, ameeleza kuwa mafanikio haya yametokana na ukuaji wa mizania ya benki, ambao umechagizwa na ukuaji wa amana za watejakwa asilimia 14 (Shilingi bilioni 10.1), ikilinganishwa na mwaka uliotangulia.
Ukuaji wa amana umeisaidia benki pia kuongeza ukuaji wa mikopo ambapo benki imefanikiwa kuongeza kiwango ghafi cha mikopokwa asilimia 11 (shilingi bilioni 8.0), ambacho ni kiasi kikubwa ukilinganisha na ongezeko la mikopo katika miaka miwili iliyotangulia. Mikopo ghafi ya benki imekua kutoka shilingibilioni 90.5mwaka 2018 kufikia shilingibilioni 93.3mwaka 2019.

The slower than expected growth is partly due to the moderate expansion of the continent’s “big five” — Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa – whose joint growth was an average rate of 3.1 percent, compared with the average of 4.0 percent for the rest of the continent. The Bank’s flagship publication, published annually since 2003, provides headline numbers on Africa’s economic performance and outlook. NMB BANK PLC RECORDS THE HIGHEST PROFIT IN THE BANKING INDUSTRY

The Bank’s net profit increased from TZS 97.7 billion in 2018 to TZS 148.6 billion in 2019. The growth is attributed to an increase in the Bank’s operating income, which increased by 5%, reduced impairment charges by 27%, and cost control measures that resulted in flat year on year operating costs.
The Bank’s interest income increased by 4% from TZS 601.6 billion in 2018 to TZS 626.3 billion in 2019, Non-Funded income increased by 14% from TZS 195.9 billion in 2018 to TZS 224 billion in 2019, while impairment charges dropped by 27% YoY from TZS 137.3 billion in 2018 to 100.4 billion in 2019, attributed to significant improvement in the quality of the loan book and loan repayments during the year.
The Bank’s total assets grew by 15% from TZS 5,680 billion in 2018 to TZS 6,548 billion in 2019. Loans and advances to customers increased to TZS 3,619 billion a 12% increase from TZS 3,272 billion recorded in the previous year.
The Bank’s asset growth was funded by a TZS 629 billion increase in customer deposits as well as the NMB Retail Bond, which raised TZS 83.3 billion in liquidity. Overall customer deposits rose by 15% from TZS 4,280 billion in the previous year to TZS 4,871 billion in 2019.

Also, I pointed out that many banks in Tanzania are lagging behind in their comprehensive adoption of social media as they do not understand how to strategically use social media. For a bank to have a competitive advantage, it needs to embrace social media platforms.
I shared two reasons why banks should embrace social media: it reduces costs and improves efficiency and improves customer experience. I urged that for those banks that do not use social media platforms yet, wake up as social media is here to stay and will continue to be a major player in the bankingindustry. So it is imperative for a bank to plan how it will utilize the social media platforms. So how can social media help banks? This week I will share two more reasons why banks should embrace social media:
- Finding potential customers - According to the Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA), the number of internet users in Tanzania is 23 million with most of them browsing while on the go via mobile devices. It is safe to assume all internet users have access to social media since mobile users just love to flock to social networking sites and platforms. Through social media, banks can monitor online conversations to understand the behaviours and needs of prospective customers, which will enable the banks to design new, or modify existing, products based on those needs.

THE TANZANIAN TELECOMMUNICATION SECTOR NOW EMPLOYS OVER 1.5M PEOPLE

Speaking at an industry event, the Deputy Minister highlighted the ways in which recent changes in the technology landscape are helping to drive the country’s economic growth.
One sector which is helping drive forward the digital technology that has helped to boost economic activity is Tanzania’s telecommunications sector.
During the past decade, the country’s telecommunications sector has invested heavily in developing digital technology, leading to a massive increase in the number of mobile subscribers to date.
The sector has also enjoyed considerable growth itself. As a result, the Tanzanian telecommunication sector now employs over 1.5 million people, providing a wide range of job opportunities, from software technicians, customer support staff, and SIM card vendors. With the roll-out of new technologies such as 4G, mobile operators have looked to expand their workforce to ensure a high-quality service for its customers.

WHY BANKS SHOULD EMBRACE SOCIAL MEDIA - PART ONE

According to Jeremy K. Balkin, an expert in the engagement of Millennials in the financial services sector, more than 60% of people (Millennials) today choose to bank on their mobile device first and by 2020 it is estimated that some 1.9 billion people will be banking on mobile. For that reason, banks need to move towards providing faster and more efficient solutions for the entire Millennial generation.
As technology is gradually changing the banking industry, social media plays an important role in achieving banks’ objectives. Furthermore, in the current banking environment, strategic social communication has become an integral component of how banks build relationships with their customers and communities.
According to Financial Brand (a digital publication focused on marketing and strategy issues affecting banks), nine out of ten financial institutions in developed markets are using Facebook and at least 50% of them are using at least Twitter or Instagram platforms compared to less than 30% of financial institutions in developing markets.
Social media helps banks to build meaningful relationships with existing clients and engage prospective clients. Social media is also one of the first places that potential clients go to find out more about prospective organizations they want to do business with so if a bank is not on social media platforms, it misses out on opportunities to grow its customers. The bank needs an effective, comprehensive, and profitable social marketing strategy that integrates with the rest of its marketing activities. It’s not just about what social media platforms use, but how to use them and when. Hence the bank needs to define a social media strategy that suits its business.

This month's briefing explores the recently proposed amendments to inheritance laws in relation to foreign heirs in Tanzania, with a particular focus on whether foreign heirs could inherit land.
This month’s legal briefing focuses on the Written Laws (Miscellaneous Amendments) (No. 8) Bill 2019 (the Bill), which among other things, proposes amendments to the Probate and Administration of Estates Act (the Probate Act). The Bill was tabled before Parliament for the first reading towards the end of 2019.
This briefing explores the following matters:
- the proposed amendments to the Probate Act and how this may affect the Land Act
- the Emmanuel Marangakis case
Section 20 of the Land Act currently provides that non-citizens shall not be allocated or granted land, unless it is for investment purposes. Section 20 of the Land Act further states that a body corporate registered in Tanzania, whose majority shareholders or owners are non-citizens, shall be considered a foreign company for the purpose of the Act.
The High Court of Tanzania in the case of Emmanuel Marangakis Attorney of Anastasios Anagnostou vs The Administrator General, Civil Case No. 1 of 2011 case interpreted section 20 of the Land Act in relation to the ability of non-citizens of Tanzania to occupy and hold land in Tanzania by way of inheritance. The High Court essentially decided that section 20 of the Land Act does not restrict foreigners from occupying land in Tanzania through inheritance. Historically, foreign heirs had been relying on this High Court decision to occupy land by way of inheritance.

IFC, TANZANIA MORTGAGE REFINANCE COMPANY PARTNER TO INCREASE ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN TANZANIA
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, January 21, 2020 - IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, today announced an investment of up to $5.75 million in the Tanzania Mortgage Refinance Company (TMRC) that will help grow the country’s nascent mortgage sector and increase access to affordable housing.
The financing includes the local currency equivalent of up to $1.5 million in equity and $4.25 million for a Medium-Term Notes (MTN) bond issuance, spread over multiple tranches. The investment leverages the International Development Association’s (IDA) Private Sector Windowlocal currency facility and blended finance facility.
Jumoke Jagun-Dokunmu, IFC’s Regional Director for Eastern Africa, said, “IFC is committed to developing the property market in Africa by providing long-term, local-currency financing. By investing in the Tanzania Mortgage Refinancing Company, we hope to boost affordable mortgage lending to create more affordable housing for Tanzanian families.”

Furthermore, it helped improve affordability by extending the mortgage repayment period from five years to up to 25 years.

VODACOM SAFEGUARDS BARRED CUSTOMER INFORMATION
Dar es Salaam; 21st January 2020: Vodacom Tanzania PLC has today announced that 157,000 of its customers have been barred from accessing services after failing to register their Sim Cards biometrically. This follows Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority’s (‘TCRA’) order to all operators to switch off non-biometrically registered phone lines as of January 20, 2020.
Announcing today, Vodacom’s Managing Director - Hisham Hendi - urged customers affected by the move to visit Vodacom’s over 35,000 service points across the country in order to register their lines and continue using the company’s services. “Our shops in major towns will continue to stay open for 24 hours a day /7 days a week in order to accommodate customers who have National ID Numbers (NINs) and who want to biometrically register their lines in order to continue using our services including M-Pesa”. He added that only those customers that have received NINs from NIDA but have failed to register their lines ahead of the said deadline have been affected by yesterday’s exercise. “Given that the exercise to biometrically register one’s sim card is an ongoing one, those customers without NINs should visit a NIDA office close to them in order to get one and eventually biometrically register their sim cards at any of our service points to avoid any inconveniences” he added.
“As a public listed company Vodacom adheres to laws and regulations of the Government of Tanzania and it’s institutions. This regulation is important for all stakeholders as it makes for good practice around know your customer protections” he said.
