BENKI ya Posta Tanzania (TPB) imedhamiria kuunganisha matawi yake yote katika mfumo wa kisasa wa mawasiliano kupitia mkongo wa mawasiliano nchini (Fiber Optic) ili kuberesha huduma na mawasiliano katika huduma zake.

Taarifa hiyo imetolewa jana jijini Dar es Salaam na Meneja Mkuu Uendeshaji wa TPB, Kolimba Tawa alipokuwa akizungumza katika makabidhiano ya mradi mpya wa benki hiyo uliounganisha mawasiliano ya kisasa takribani matawi 11 maeneo mbalimmbali nchini.

WORLD BANK APPROVES NEW FINANCING FOR MORE AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN TANZANIA AS ITS CITIES EXPAND

WASHINGTON D.C. February 24, 2015 – The World Bank Group’s Board of Executive Directors today approved $60 million in new financing from the highly-concessional International Development Association (IDA)* to help Tanzania develop a viable mortgage finance market for affordable housing. The new financing will build on the achievements of the ongoing 2010 Housing Finance Project (HFP) and brings the total IDA investment in the project to $100 million.

The HFP has overseen the establishment of the Tanzania Mortgage Refinancing Company (TMRC) which is playing a key role in developing the mortgage market. The Company provides long term financing to mortgage lenders which has encouraged an increasing number of banks to offer mortgages. Improved access to financing has also contributed to the growing supply of affordable housing coming onto the market.

The project, which is being implemented by the Bank of Tanzania, is also delivering a comprehensive capacity building program on the mortgage market targeting service providers, financial intermediaries, market professionals, policy makers, regulators, government authorities, the judiciary and the general public.

“Tanzania's rapid urbanization in recent years has underscored the urgency to improve access to finance for affordable housing,” says Philippe Dongier, World Bank Country Director for Tanzania, Burundi and Uganda. “Developing mortgage markets will make it possible for ordinary families (including those that have low incomes) to invest in their own housing as opposed to renting or building slowly over many years as and when they set aside some savings. The mortgage market will go a long way in addressing the constraints to accessing housing credit which many working urban residents face, and it will further expand the construction industry and associated jobs.”

SIMU ZA OBI MOBILES ZAINGIA TANZANIA

TANZANIA'S EXPORTS TO INDIA INCREASE BY 70PC

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s exports to India increased by about 70 per cent last year as the two countries amplify efforts to boost their bilateral trade relations, it was revealed on Monday.

Tanzania exported goods worth $1.3 billion (Sh2 trillion) to the world’s tenth-largest economy – by nominal gross domestic product – last year from $752.2 (Sh1.2 trillion) exported the previous year, the Indian High Commissioner said in Dar es Salaam.

“This is the first time that Tanzania’s exports have shown an impressive growth,” Mr Debnath Shaw as he addressed a high level business delegation from Federation of Gujarat Industries, Vodadara and Gurarat.

The growth, according to the Indian diplomat, stems from efforts such as organising seminars, exhibitions and business visits between governments and members of the private sector from the two countries.

TANZANIA COMMUNICATIONS REGULATORY AUTHORITY’S DIRECTIVE TO MOBILE OPERATORS

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has directed mobile service providers to adhere to the law when reviewing their tariffs following a recent change of bundles that concerned the public.

The regulator also asked the operators to file the tariffs with it before they become effective but all the directives seems to be for future use as it did not clearly state any irregularity.

When The Citizen called TCRA to clarify whether the directives mean that the mobile operators had broken the law or should revert to the old tariffs, the agency’s spokesperson Mr Innocent Mungy said the recently changed tariffs were under promotion and that the operators did not violate any regulation.

Nairobi, Monday. New evidence has emerged of how the contract for the construction of a modern passenger terminal at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport was varied by more than Sh9 billion.

The revelation comes a few days after the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) sent home four top managers, including Managing Director Lucy Mbugua, to pave the way for investigations into alleged corruption at the region’s largest airport.

The contract, signed in 2013 between the authority and Chinese firm Anhui Construction Engineering Group Ltd, was a variation of the original contract signed in 2011, with the introduction of a new inflated provision for Sh9.5 billion

The first contract signed in December 2011 between KAA and the company was for an agreed sum of Sh59.4 billion.

AGA KHAN UNIVERSITY TO INVEST $1BN IN EAST AFRICA

The Chancellor of the Aga Khan University (AKU), His Highness the Aga Khan, confers a master’s degree in education on Ms Mwanapili Mwinyi Kambi at the 2015 AKU convocation in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

Dar es Salaam. The Aga Khan University has announced a $1 billion (Sh1.8 trillion) investment in education in East Africa. At the same time, the Aga Khan – the spiritual leader of Shia Ismaili Muslims – yesterday said Africa must move rapidly to establish and reinforce a healthy civil society to help improve quality of life.

The investment, to be released over 15 years, will see new campuses and graduate schools in the region, with $700 million coming to Tanzania. Speaking at the university’s graduation ceremony in Dar es Salaam, the Aga Khan said both the developed and the developing worlds need quality civil society organisations to manage the future. Vibrant and ethical civil society organisations are critical if the quality of human life across the world is to be improved, he added.

Kwa upande wa Meneja Mkazi wa Kampuni ya EY, Bw. Joseph Sheffu amesema kuna maeneo mengi wameayatafiti na kuona kuna fursa ya uwekezaji kutokana na taratibu bora zilizopo nchini katika sekta ya uwekezaji.

Bw. Sheffu amesema kampuni hiyo ina wahasibu, wataalam wa kodi pamoja na wakaguzi ambao wameweza kupata ujuzi katika mataifa mbalimbali hivyo huduma inayotolewa na taasisi hiyo imekuwa ni bora.

JK GRANTS CHARTER TO AGA KHAN VARSITY

President Jakaya Kikwete holds talks with His Highness the Aga Khan at State House on Monday before the Head of State granted a charter to the Aga Khan University.

Dar es Salaam. President Jakaya Kikwete on Monday granted a charter to the Aga Khan University, making it the first foreign-based institution to get the document.

President Kikwete handed the certificate to His Highness the Aga Khan at a ceremony at State House.

The Head of State said the government of Tanzania had for many years enjoyed a cordial relationship with the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), which runs the university and other Aga Khan projects in the country.

REGULATION CAN ONLY HAVE A LIMITED IMPACT ON FINANCIAL INCLUSION

The problem with a regulatory approach to the promotion of financial inclusion is that regulations cannot force financial institutions to provide customers with services when it is not profitable for them to do so.

The main cause of financial exclusion is the difficulty in serving the financially excluded in a commercially viable manner, since the costs of providing such services are high, especially in rural areas, whereas the income that can be generated from the poor is low.

Consequently financial exclusion can only be reduced through innovations that lower the cost of providing services or which can create new services that are both wanted by and affordable to the poor.

In a market economy, the institutions best placed to generate these innovations are in the private sector — institutions that have the incentive and expertise to do so.

UGANDA SECURITIES EXCHANGE GETS NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE

After more than a year of sourcing, the governing council of the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE) has appointed Mr Paul Bwiso as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Mr Bwiso, who admits his love for reading and playing basketball, is not new to the USE.

For the last six years, he has been the general manager, Dyer and Blair Investment Bank of Uganda, a member of the USE. He was also a member of the USE governing council.

“My plan is to correct the way we have been doing things,” Mr Bwiso told Daily Monitor in an interview.

SAFARICOM SHARES AT ALL-TIME HIGH AS NAIROBI SECURITIES EXCHANGE SOARS TOWARD 5500 (KENYA)

The Nairobi Securities Exchange indicative 20-Share index edged closer to the 5,500 mark buoyed by price rally of blue chips.

The index gained 27.7 points in Thursday’s trading to close at 5473.8 as telecommunication giant Safaricom touched an all-time high and beer maker East African Breweries Limited (EABL) traded at the highest price in the last one year.

“On sustained foreign investor demand, EABL touched a new 52-week high of Sh355. Also keeping up with the momentum, Safaricom touched an all-time high of Sh15.30 mainly buoyed by local investor demand,” said Standard Investment Bank.

The two counters are the largest with Safaricom valued at Sh607 billion and EABL at Sh276 billion.

SOUTH SUDAN, SOMALIA TO WAIT LONGER TO JOIN EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY

Somalia and South Sudan will have to wait longer to join the East African Community (EAC).

According to a communiqué after the 16th EAC Heads of State Summit that ended in Nairobi Friday, the earliest the two states can be admitted to the regional bloc is next year.

South Sudan’s bid to join the EAC has stumbled in the wake of the civil war that broke out pitting forces loyal to vice president Dr Riek Machar against those supporting President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

NIGERIA, CHINA TRADE TRANSACTION HITS $191 BILLION

The Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Mr Liu Kan, says the volume of trade between Nigeria and China in 2014 was about N38.01 trillion ($18.1 billion).

Liu said on Wednesday in Lagos that there was relative increase in the exchange of goods and services in the year over the 2013 transactions.

“Today, Nigeria is China’s third major export destination in Africa after South Africa and Angola, while China is Nigeria’s largest source of imports and third major trade partner. According to China Customs, the trade volume between China and Nigeria in 2014 rose to about 18.1 billion dollars which is an increase over our 2013 transaction

11 MW POWER FACILITY COMMISSIONED IN NORTHERN MOZAMBIQUE

Aggreko, in partnership with Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), the state power utility have successfully commissioned 11 MW of generation capacity in the port city of Nacala, northern Mozambique. This facility will be further increased by 7 MW in the coming weeks, bringing the total capacity of the plant to 18 MW.

With consistent annual GDP growth of more than 7% and a rapidly expanding industrial sector, power demands across Mozambique are increasing exponentially. In its role as the national power utility and system operator in Mozambique, EDM are working to bring high quality electricity throughout the country by increasing generation capacity and further developing transmission and distribution networks.

The strain on power supplies in northern Mozambique has been increased due to recent seasonal flooding that has caused disruption to power networks in a number of Northern provinces. The additional generation capacity from the Aggreko plant comes on-line at a critical time, helping ensure power supplies are maintained to essential services in Nampula province.

KENYA EIGTH LARGEST GEOTHERMAL POWER PRODUCER IN THE WORLD, STUDY SAYS

A new study presented to World Bank by KenGen has revealed that Kenya is the eighth largest geothermal energy producer in the world; this is after the completion of the additional 280MW to the national grid in Olkaria.

The energy production has so far come with several benefits to Kenyans as it has contributed to lowering the cost of doing business by displacing thermal power and has added to Kenya’s green energy initiatives.

EGYPT TO OFFER SOLAR POWER PROJECTS AT EEDC

Egypt will increase its solar power capacity from 4.3GW to 8GW in the next ten years, in a bid to meet the energy needs of the country.

This was announced by the investment minister Ashraf Salman, who said that the additional capacity of electricity will be generated through solar power. “…We anticipate that 4.3GW of that need will be generated by solar power,” the minister added.

The government expects to start signing photovoltaic project deals during the Egypt Economic and Development Conference which will be held in March this year. ““Significant contracts for investment in solar and coal power stations will be made available at the EEDC and we think it highly likely that they will be signed at the conference,” the minister added.

US$145M APPROVED FOR TANZANIA-KENYA POWER LINE PROJECT

African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved the US$ 145m outstanding loan to Kenya to pave way for construction of the 508 km Tanzania-Kenya power line project.

AFDB said in a statement that the funds will see through construction of 508 km transmission line and substations, which will help transmit 2,000MW of electricity between Kenya and Tanzania (about 93 km in Kenya and 415 km in Tanzania).

The 508-km and 400-kilovolt (kV) power line is anticipated to enhance regional power connections between the two countries and boost access to cheap power, as well as spur industrial production.

GHANA TO RECEIVE POWER GENERATING SHIPS THIS MARCH

Karpowership Ghana Company, a subsidiary of Turkish Karadeniz Energy Group will deliver two temporal power generating vessels/stations to Ghana on March this year to help boost the country’s electricity needs. This will be in follow-up to an agreement signed last year June between Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the company.

The ship-floating power stations project is under the finance of Karpower, which is an independent power producer. Previously the company had signed a 10 year power purchase agreement with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
