LANGUAGE AND LEARNING IN FOCUS: KEY INSIGHTS FROM THE BRITISH COUNCIL INCLUSION CONFERENCE

In November 2025, the British Council convened the Language, Education and Inclusion Conference in Abuja. The event brought together policymakers, researchers, educators, and development partners from across Africa, South Asia, and the United Kingdom to explore how education systems can become more inclusive and equitable—particularly through the lens of language in teaching and learning.

This conference forms part of a broader series of British Council engagements focused on improving inclusion and quality in education. Across many countries, factors such as gender, disability, geography, and poverty remain central to learning outcomes. Within these discussions, language consistently emerges as a critical determinant of whether learners can fully participate, understand lessons, and remain engaged in the classroom.

Classroom Experience and Inclusion

A key focus of the conference was the learner’s experience in the classroom. Participants examined how language directly influences comprehension, confidence, and participation. When teaching connects with what learners already know—especially through familiar languages—lessons tend to be more accessible and engaging. This is particularly important for learners who may otherwise struggle to keep up.

Another important area of discussion was the role of English. In many participating countries, English serves as an official language and a gateway to education, employment, and global engagement. The conversation, therefore, was not about whether English is important—but how to ensure equitable access to quality English-language education, especially for learners who primarily encounter English in school settings.

A third dimension explored different international approaches to language use in education. Delegates shared experiences from systems where:

• English is used as the medium of instruction from early years,
• English is introduced later in schooling,
• Or where bilingual and multilingual approaches are applied.

Arusha - Wakulima wa Wilaya ya Karatu wanatarajiwa kunufaika kwa kiasi kikubwa na upatikanaji bora wa taarifa za masoko pamoja na kuongezeka kwa uwazi katika biashara ya mazao, kufuatia kuanzishwa kwa mpango wa kidijitali unaoongozwa na Mixx by Yas kwa kushirikiana na wadau wa sekta ya kilimo.

Mpango huo ulizinduliwa rasmi kupitia hafla ya makabidhiano ya runinga janja (Smart TV) iliyotolewa kwa Chama Kikuu cha Ushirika Arusha (ACU) kwa kushirikiana na Mamlaka ya Udhibiti wa Nafaka na Mazao Mchanganyiko (COPRA). Hatua hii inalenga kuboresha upatikanaji wa taarifa muhimu za masoko kwa wakulima na kuongeza ushiriki wao katika mifumo rasmi ya biashara.

Akizungumza katika hafla hiyo, Meneja wa Kibiashara Kanda ya Kaskazini wa Mixx by Yas, Eric Sosteness, alisema kuwa suluhisho za kidijitali zinatoa fursa mpya kwa wakulima kufikia masoko kwa urahisi zaidi.

“Kupitia Mixx by Yas, tumejikita kuwawezesha wakulima kwa kuwapatia suluhisho zinazowaleta karibu zaidi na masoko. Upatikanaji wa taarifa za mnada kwa wakati utawasaidia wakulima kufanya maamuzi sahihi na kuongeza kipato chao,” alisema.

Runinga hiyo janja inatarajiwa kuwa chombo muhimu katika kurusha moja kwa moja minada ya mazao ya kilimo. Kupitia teknolojia hiyo, wakulima wa Karatu na maeneo jirani wataweza kufuatilia mwenendo wa bei na shughuli za biashara bila kulazimika kuwepo katika eneo la mnada. Hatua hii inatarajiwa kuongeza uwazi, kupunguza upotoshaji wa taarifa, na kuimarisha ushindani wa haki katika soko.

Katika kuendeleza ajenda ya uendelevu na uhifadhi wa mazingira, KCB Bank Tanzania kwa kushirikiana na Mikoko Development Foundation wamefanikisha utekelezaji wa mpango wa kimkakati wa upandaji miti katika eneo la Kondo, ambapo jumla ya miti 1,000 imepandwa kulinda vyanzo muhimu vya maji.

Mpango huu unaendana na mkakati wa KCB Tanzania wa kuimarisha athari chanya za mazingira na kijamii (ESG), ukilenga kurejesha mifumo ya ikolojia na kulinda vyanzo vya maji—ambavyo ni muhimu katika kukabiliana na changamoto za mabadiliko ya tabianchi.

Ushirikiano kati ya taasisi hizi mbili unaonesha namna sekta binafsi na mashirika ya kijamii yanavyoweza kufanya kazi kwa pamoja kwa ufanisi, kwa kutumia utaalamu wa ndani na kuunda thamani ya pamoja. TANZANIA RECORDS 357% SURGE IN REVENUE FROM GOVERNMENT MINORITY-OWNED COMPANIES

Arusha, Tanzania | 16 March 2026 — Tanzania has recorded a significant increase in revenue contributions from companies in which the Government holds minority shares, highlighting improved performance, stronger governance, and enhanced investment oversight.

Speaking at the Annual Forum of Board Directors of Government Minority-Owned Companies held at the Pan African Postal Union (PAPU) Headquarters in Arusha, the Minister for Finance, Khamis Mussa Omar, revealed that contributions to the Consolidated Fund rose sharply from TZS 58.26 billion in 2020 to TZS 266.52 billion in 2024.

The increase represents a remarkable 357 percent growth over five years, reflecting the impact of reforms and strengthened supervision under the Treasury Registrar’s Office.

“This growth demonstrates improved governance, accountability, and strategic management of public investments,” the Minister noted.

Government Investment Hits TZS 3.6 Trillion

According to Minister Omar, companies in which the Government holds minority shares now account for 18 percent of the 308 institutions under the Treasury Registrar.

He added that total Government investment reached TZS 3.6 trillion in the 2024/2025 financial year, with TZS 1.94 trillion invested domestically—a clear indication of the Government’s commitment to supporting local economic growth.

Driving Growth Through Strategic Investment

The Finance Minister emphasized the importance of ensuring that public investments are efficiently managed, profitable, and aligned with national economic priorities.

He commended ongoing reforms across public institutions, noting their critical role in boosting non-tax revenue collection and strengthening overall institutional performance.

These reforms, he said, have contributed to a record increase in non-tax revenue to the Government in the current fiscal cycle.

The equities market continues to deliver exceptional performance, with domestic market capitalisation rising by more than 52.5% since the start of the year. This surge has been largely driven by banking stocks, underscoring investor confidence in the sector’s profitability and financial stability.

According to Zan Securities’ Advisory and Research Manager, Isaac Lubeja, the banking sector remains central to the market’s growth trajectory.

“The equities market is currently riding a wave of exceptional growth, and we expect the banking sector to remain the primary protagonist in this story,” he said.

Leading counters such as CRDB Bank and DCB Bank have continued to attract strong demand from local investors, reflecting solid balance sheets and earnings outlooks.

However, analysts caution that foreign investor activity could influence the pace of the rally. Net foreign outflows doubled during the week to 22.95bn/-, raising concerns about whether domestic institutional investors can sustain the current upward momentum.

“There is a subtle tension building in the market,” Mr Lubeja noted, highlighting the delicate balance between local demand and foreign selling pressure.

Monday 16 March 2026, Dar es Salaam – Coca-Cola Kwanza Ltd (CCK) - a company in the Coca-Cola Beverages Africa Group, has handed over six Tuk-Tuks to top-performing official distributors as part of a Returnable Glass Bottle (RGB) incentive programme aimed at rewarding partners who are driving beverage availability and market growth across Tanzania.

The incentive programme, which ran during the fourth quarter of last year, was open to all qualifying distributors of CCK products. It sought to recognize distributors that demonstrated outstanding performance while ensuring that a cold drink remains easily accessible to consumers across the country.

The Tuk-Tuk delivery vehicles were awarded to four distributors who recorded the highest RGB sales volumes in the fourth quarter, while two additional distributors were recognized for achieving the highest RGB sales volumes for the full year in 2025.

According to David Chait, General Manager of CCK, the initiative reflects the company’s broader strategy of partnering with distributors to drive shared growth while improving service to retailers and consumers.

STANDARD CHARTERED MARKS WOMEN’S DAY WITH DONATION AND FINANCIAL EDUCATION AT CCBRT

OYA MICRO-CREDIT YAANDAA FUTARI MAALUM KUIMARISHA MSHIKAMANO NA JAMII

ECOBANK LENDING TO WOMEN-LED BUSINESSES SURGES 194% TO US$780 MILLION
