The 5th Anzisha Prize application phase is now open, and the search is on to find Africa’s youngest, most exciting social and business entrepreneurs under 22 years of age.

Tangu alipowasili nchini Uingereza, Mheshimiwa Mbene alikutanishwa na wafanyabiashara na wawekezaji mbalimbali kupitia Vyama vyao vya kibiashara na pia alikutana na baadhi ya wafanyabiashara na wawekezaji binafsi na kufanya nao mazungumzo yenye lengo la kuwekeza kwenye uongezaji thamani wa mazao au kufanya biashara hasa kwa kuvipatia masoko bidhaa kutoka nchini Tanzania.

Mheshimiwa Janet Mbene pia alikutanishwa na mshauri wa Serikali ya Uingereza juu ya masuala ya biashara kwa Tanzania, Lord Clive Hollick na watendaji wengine wa Idara ya uhamasishaji uwekezaji na Biashara (UKTI), ambapo alielezwa baadhi ya changamoto wanazokumbana nazo wawekezaji nchini Tanzania. Mheshimiwa Mbene alitumia fursa hiyo kuwapa ushauri anaoamini utasaidia kupatikana kwa ufumbuzi wa changamoto hizo na hasa baada ya mifumo ya utendaji kazi serikalini kurekebishwa kupitia Mpango maalum wa Matokeo Makubwa sasa (BRN).

Katika siku ya tatu ya ziara yake, mheshimiwa Mbene alitembelea Ofisi za Ubalozi na kukutana na watumishi wa Ubalozi na baadaye kukitembelea Kituo cha Biashara na kupata maelezo juu ya shughuli zake na changamoto zake.

Pia kutokana na ziara yake na kuongea na wafanyabiashara mbalimbali, Mheshimiwa Mbene amegundua kuwa Kituo kinafanya kazi kwa karibu sana na wafanyabiashara wa Ulaya, hivyo Serikali inatakiwa kukiongezea Kituo nguvu zaidi ili kiweze kutekeleza majukumu yake mengi kwa ufanisi zaidi na kuendelea kutoa mchango wake mkubwa katika kufanikisha malengo ya kiuchumi ya Taifa, kama ilivyokusudiwa.

Mheshimiwa Mbene baada ya kugundua kuwa ziko fursa nyingi za biashara na uwekezaji na kwamba wafanyabiashara wengi wana imani na Tanzania, ameahidi kupeleka mapendekezo yake Serikalini ya jinsi ya kuimarisha shughuli za Vituo vyetu vya Biashara ambavyo viko nje ya Tanzania.

Jambo la kwanza ni uandikishaji wa Wapiga Kura. Tarehe 24 Februari, 2015 Waziri Mkuu, Mheshimiwa Mizengo Kayanza Peter Pinda alizindua rasmi uandikishaji wa wapiga kura ikiwa ni sehemu ya zoezi la uboreshaji wa daftari la kudumu la wapiga kura nchini. Zoezi hili lilizinduliwa Makambako, Mkoani Njombe na litaendelea nchini kote mpaka litakapokamilika kwa mujibu wa ratiba itakayopangwa na Tume ya Uchaguzi. Uandikishaji unatumia teknolojia ya kisasa ya utambuzi wa alama za vidole (BVR) na macho ya mtu anayeandikishwa. Teknolojia hii itatusaidia kuondoa kutoaminiana, manung’uniko na madai kuhusu udanganyifu katika chaguzi zetu kwamba wamepiga kura wasiostahili. Kuanza kutumika kwa teknolojia hii ni kielelezo cha utashi wa Serikali kuwa nchi yetu iwe na chaguzi zilizo huru, wazi na haki.

1. What was your first job?

It was part-time when in high school, during the night and on weekends to save for my first car. I was 16 and worked in an ice cream store and a clothing shop earning US$6.50 an hour.

2. What parts of your job keep you awake at night?

One is, are my customers happy? Second is my team. Who is underperforming and why? Not because I need to fire them the next day, but how can I motivate them? Do they need a tough talk, an inspirational talk, or are they just underperforming because they’re not fit for the role?

3. Who has had the biggest impact on your career and why?

There is a lady I worked with for three months in microfinance. She had graduated from Harvard and had the opportunity to make lots of money, but she chose to work in emerging markets. She was still doing challenging things but having an impact on people’s lives. I had always imagined myself working in one of these fancy jobs in the corporate world for 20 years, then at 45 shifting over and working for a non-profit. But she made me realise I can have an impact from a young age whether it is working in development or in a business operating where markets are growing. She is the one who told me I could take my skills andeducation and work in an emerging market, showing me there was no reason to wait until I was 45.

In an effort to help upgrade the socio-economic level of the society where it operates, Exim Bank Tanzania has renovated the Amani Center for people with disability located at Chamwino, Morogoro region.

The bank through its policy of giving back to the community where it operates is also set to provide more support to community development initiatives in the country.

Speaking at a function to handover the renovated buildings in Morogoro yesterday, Exim Bank (Morogoro) Branch Manager, Mrs. Anna Wesiwasi said the bank’s heartfelt support will go a long way in upgrading the quality of life to the children living at the centre as it will help the latter live in a more conducive and healthier environment.

US AND EAST AFRICA SIGN NEW TRADE AGREEMENT

Trade between the United States and the East African Community (EAC) member countries is set to increase following signing of a raft of trade agreements by the two regions on Thursday.

US Trade Representative Michael Froman led trade ministers from each of the five EAC countries in signing the Cooperation Agreement on Trade Facilitation, Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, and Technical Barriers to Trade.

Mr Froman said the signing was an important milestone for deepening the ties between the two blocs.

"This agreement will help us lift the burdens that trade barriers impose, unlocking opportunity on both our continents," said Mr Froman.

The pact is aimed at speeding movement of goods within the EAC and expanding the volume of exports to the US.

TANZANIA IN PLANS TO AMEND BUDGET, EXCLUDE DONOR FUNDING

Stung by a decision by major donors to withhold $500 million in aid until a corruption scandal is fully investigated and implicated officials punished, the Tanzanian government now says it will not plan for any support in the next budget.

Servacius Likwelile, the Permanent Secretary in the Finance Ministry, said donors had stayed away from a scheduled budget review meeting in November, and that there were no indications of how much money, if any, they would give to reduce the budget deficit for the 2015/16 financial year that begins in July.

“The government has decided that, going forward, we will not continue to depend on donors, and we have come up with other measures to offset this,” Dr Likwelile said.

The new budget guidelines seen by The EastAfrican acknowledge the difficulties the government has faced in accessing promised aid in the first two quarters of the 2014/15 financial year.

OIL FIRMS ROB TANZANIANS OFF SH18BN YEARLY: REPORT

Dar es Salaam. Oil marketing companies have been stealing imported petroleum products worth Sh18 billion annually, according to a stakeholders’ report.

The report, which was released on Friday by a Special Committee of Oil Marketing Companies and Stakeholders under the Bulk Oil Procurement System (BPS), shows that there are three areas where theft takes place, one being from the vessels themselves.

The pipeline system also provides an opening for oil thieves to operate. And then, the pipeline is linked with vessels to many terminals and storage terminals which avail loopholes for thieves.

In this trend, the loser is none other than the end user, that is, the consumer of oil who has to bear the burden of the huge losses, the report points out.

From the study carried out by a committee set up by Petroleum Importation Coordinator (PIC) Ltd, it has been established that between December 2011 and November 2014, Tanzanians incurred a loss of 30,000 metric tonnes of fuel worth $28 million (Sh51 billion).

BARCELONA — Samsung Electronics Co. introduced a flagship smartphone with a curved screen and mobile-payment system, seeking to spark sales after a painful year that saw its leadership eroded by Apple Inc. and Chinese upstarts like Xiaomi Corp.

The new Galaxy S6 and its double curved-screen variant the Galaxy S6 Edge, released Sunday on the sidelines of an annual trade show here, outlines Samsung’s005930, +4.86% latest strategy for finding its footing: take on Apple’s AAPL, -1.50% iPhone head on, while bringing even more of the manufacturing process under its control.

Kampuni ya ACACIA kupitia mgodi wake wa Buzwagi uliopo kwenye halmashauri ya mji wa Kahama, imeipatia ushuru wa asilimia 0.3 (0.3%) ya mapato ghafi halmashauri hiyo, ikiwa ni ushuru kwa kipindi cha miezi sita (Julai - Disemba, 2014) ambayo ni zaidi ya shilingi za kitanzania millioni 800, uliokabidhiwa kwa Mkurugenzi wa Halmashauri ya Mji wa Kahama.

TANZANIAN AND ITALIAN PETROLEUM REFINING COMPANY LIMITED (TIPER) SET TO DOUBLE FUEL STORAGE CAPACITY

The Tanzanian and Italian Petroleum Refining Company Limited (TIPER), now plans to invest 16 million US dollars (about 25.6bn/-) to double its storage capacity to 300,000 cubic metres. The firm's current operational capacity is 141,000 cubic metres. The facility is used for the storage of petroleum products namely gas oil (diesel), gasoline (petrol) as well as kerosene and heavy furnace oil (HFO).

TIPER Managing Director, Mr. Daniel Belair, was recently quoted as saying that the investment comes in addition to a massive rehabilitation which started several years ago at the cost of 14 million US dollars (about 22.4bn/-).

Mr. Belair says the decision to increase the firm's storage capacity is regarded to have come at the right time, when East Africa continues to grow. “Fuel is a key component of growth and as Tanzania and the neighbouring countries’ demand for fuel increase, TIPER is able to accommodate the growth.”
