TTCL RECOVERS TWO-THIRD OUTSTANDING DEBT

Tanzania Telecommunication Company Limited (TTCL) has managed to collect two-third of its outstanding debt in three months. TTCL recovered 6.8bn/- out of 10.7bn/- total debt owed to its clients in just three months ending October.

The collection of outstanding debt was beefed by the government recently directive to state owned firms to take appropriate measures against defaulters.

The Deputy Minister for Works and Communication Mr Atashasta Nditiye said during the familiarisation tour to TTCL in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the delays in paying back the debt is letting down the company strategic plan to expand communication services throughout the country.

“There is no more room for discussions with defaulters other than cutting the services and suing them in court,” he said while urging each individual employee at TTCL to work hard and add value to the company’s services.

He pledged to the TTCL management and staff the necessary government support to ensure communication services are expanding and reaching the underserved population particularly in the rural areas. He also called TTCL to speed up providing high quality and affordable services to its customers as way to sustain stiff competitions in the market.

Speaking earlier, the TTCL Chief Executive Officer, Mr Waziri Kindamba said the company has recently ventured into mobile money transfer services (TTCL PESA) as it seeks to enter the competitive market that already has four players utilising an unstructured supplementary service data (USSD) technology to roll-out its services soon.

The introduction of the new mobile money services by TTCL brings good news to especially rural dwellers who have limited access to conventional bank services and for years have been yearning for cheaper mobile communication services.

So far all mobile money operators in Tanzania are offering similar services that enable users to easily deposit, withdraw, transfer money, settle bills and pay for goods through their phones. “With this major transformation, TTCL will compete with the rest of other players in the mobile telecommunications industry,” he said.

Getting internet to remote areas is also seen as a development tool to boost education and opportunities for the poorer population. “We’re dedicated to making life better for our customers and their businesses.

So whatever your sector, and whatever you require, we’ll have the solution to help,” he said. TTCL also launched video conference services that will maximize corporate efficient while cut down travel expenses.
