Zantel's staff participates in the blood donation drive in Unguja yesterday.
In a bid to support
the national blood bank, volunteering employees of Zantel in Zanzibar have held
a blood donation exercise which is also a continuation of their ‘Shea Upendo na
Uwapendao’ campaign that began in Dar es Salaam last week.
The exercise, which forms part of the company’s Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR), is aimed at spreading love through blood donation,
supporting the national blood bank as well as to saving lives of fellow
Tanzanians.
Held at Zantel’s head office in Zanzibar, the exercise witnessed a
huge turnout with Zantel employees and a few members of the general public
participating.
Speaking during the event, head of Zantel in Zanzibar Mr. Mohamed Musa
Baucha expressed
appreciation to all participants and called on other companies as well as the general
public to avail themselves for such exercises whenever they are approached to
do so.
“We are very happy that our call to help save lives was met with
so much enthusiasm today with almost all of the Zantel employees in Zanzibar. I
urge all of you to continue with this heart whenever you are called upon to
participate in these kind of exercises,” he said.
On his part, a representative from the Zanzibar National Blood Transfusion Service, Omar Said Omar explained that the blood donation exercise was successful and that he was happy with the commitment displayed by the Zantel staff.
He, however, noted that the demand of blood is still high in the country compared to the units collected.
“The Zanzibar
National Blood Transfusion Service needs to collect atleast 12,000 units every
year to meet the annual demand, but it has been collecting only 40 per cent of
the requirement,” Omar said.
He further noted
that blood donation is an ongoing exercise for voluntary donors but ZBTS has been
approaching companies and the general public to raise public awareness on the
importance of donating blood for saving lives. "Only a few people have been
donating blood voluntarily and so this is a wakeup call to others to
participate”, he said.
