DUTCH CONSTRUCTION FIRM TO REFURBISH KILIMANJARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

March 16, 2015. A Dutch construction firm—Bam International has been awarded a Euro 37 million designs and construction contract for rehabilitation and extension of Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA).

According to the contract, BAM is expected to complete the work for Kilimanjaro Airports Development Company (KADCO) in July, next year.
KADCO manages the KIA—the second largest airport in the country after the Julius Nyerere International Airport in the country’s commercial capital of Dar es Salaam.

KADCO Director of Operations and Technical Services, Christopher Mukoma told reporters here that the scope of work comprises the refurbishment of the 44-year-old terminal building, to enable it to handle as many passengers as possible.

“The building is expected to have ultra-modern restaurants as well as a modern passengers’ waiting lounge,” Mukama said, adding that it will also involve the construction of a new parallel 1.1 km taxiway, extension of the existing apron and taxiways, including repairs on the 3 km-runway, as well as upgrading the airport’s drainage and sewage systems.
He said the construction company will also install new airfield ground lighting and floodlights along the apron.

The funding for the airport’s refurbishment project was partly granted by the Dutch fund-ORIO for the development and implementation of this project, to the tune of Euro 15 million while the remaining part is guaranteed by commercial financing arranged by the government of Tanzania.

KIA is the main gate way to northern Tanzania’s tourist hub.
The Dutch construction firm has completed two rehabilitation projects already and is currently constructing the JNIA’s new Terminal 3 building.
