Zanzibar. ZANTEL has donated 3 used generators worth 250,000 USD to Karume Institute of science and technology of Zanzibar in support of the School’s efforts in ensuring that students continue with their studies even when the power is out.

Speaking during the handover ceremony in Zanzibar over the weekend, The company’s, Head in Zanzibar, Mr. Mohamed Mussa Baucha said the donation was meant to help the college students with their studies as an alternative means of power once electricity goes out and expressed his hope that students will be encouraged to perform well as a result.

Dodoma. There may be light at the end of the tunnel for the banking industry after commercial banks endured two consecutive years of decline.

Analysis predict better performance in 2018 following a forgettable run in 2016 and 2017, thanks to a liquidity squeeze that prompted banks to slash lending to the private sector.

With tight liquidity in the economy, borrowers failed to honour their obligations, resulting in a spike in nonperforming loans (NPLs).

The NPL ratio had jumped to an average of 9.5 per cent by the end of last year from 6.4 per cent in 2015 against the acceptable threshold of five per cent. The NPL ratio is the ratio of the amount of nonperforming loans in a bank’s loan portfolio to the total amount of outstanding loans the bank holds.

The situation persisted through 2017, with financial results for the first nine months of the year showing increasing NPLs and declining profits among at least four of the country’s largest banks. Some banks blamed the situation on the government’s decision to dismiss 9,932 of the 435,000 workers on its payroll for allegedly possessing forged academic and professional certificates.

A significant number of the sacked workers, who were ordered to leave office by May 15 or face arrest and prosecution, had taken bank loans.

15^th December 2017, Arusha. In Tanzania, hospitals and clinics suffer from a shortage of medicine, medical supplies and beds, particularly public referral hospitals. In an attempt to address these shortages plaguing the nation, Exim Bank Tanzania has embarked on a countrywide initiative of donating 500 beds and mattresses to public hospitals in 13 regions across the country as part of a year-long corporate social campaign aimed at celebrating 20 years of serving the Tanzanian community.

Today, Exim Bank Tanzania, has donated 40 beds and mattresses to Mount Meru Regional Hospital.

The Corporate Social campaign dubbed “20 years of taking care of the community” which was launched in August during the banks 20^th anniversary has invested heavily into the Tanzanian health care.

CHINESE TOURISTS BIGGEST SPENDERS IN TANZANIA BY FAR

The 2016 International Visitors’ Exit Survey published last week by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows that a Chinese tourist spent an average of $541 (about Sh1.2 million) per night in 2016.

Dar es Salaam. Chinese visitors are the biggest spenders among foreign tourists in Tanzania, according to the latest official data.

The 2016 International Visitors’ Exit Survey published last week by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows that a Chinese tourist spent an average of $541 (about Sh1.2 million) per night in 2016.

This is about three times of the overall average expenditure per person per night of $178 for tourists from other countries. In 2015, the overall average expenditure was $199.

A decrease in the average expenditure per person per night is partly attributed to an increase in the number of arrivals from neighbouring countries, where expenditure is lower.

Visitors from the UK, US, South Africa, Australia, France and Canada spent above the national average of $178 per person per night, but their average expenditure was far below what the Chinese spent.

Dodoma. The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) is finalising a policy on interest rate caps, The Citizen has learnt. It is part of  efforts by the government reduce the cost of credit, which is said to be prohibitively high for many Tanzanians.

BoT deputy governor (financial stability and deepening) Bernard Kibesse said in Dodoma on Wednesday that Tanzania had opted for a policy as it studied how other countries in the region were handling the matter.

“The relevant policy will be ready by March, 2018,” he said on the sidelines of the official opening by President John Magufuli of CRDB Bank’s main branch in Dodoma.

Speaking during the event, President Magufuli reiterated his call to commercial banks to lower their lending rates, saying the government was strengthening credit reference systems as a way of reducing non-performing loans (NPLs) in the banking system.

“That is why I want BoT to come up with a policy that will ensure uniformity of lending rates across financial institutions. We cannot build an industrialised nation with a system whereby each bank charges its own rates,” he said.

Zanzibar. ZANTEL and Zanzibar Revenue Board (ZRB) have entered into a partnership that allows tax payers in Zanzibar to pay all of their taxes through Zantel’s mobile money service EzyPesa which is available nationwide.

This partnership allows all ZRB clients including those who are not using Zantel services to be able to make their tax payments without any hassles.

This also means that local taxpayers will now be able to conveniently pay their respective taxes including Customs and Excise taxes such as: Import Duty, Excise Duty, Pay as You Earn (PAYE) and VAT on importation through EzyPesa.

MAGUFULI ORDERS TIGHTER FOREIGN EXCHANGE CONTROLS, BANK CRACKDOWN AS GROWTH SLOWS

Tanzanian President John Magufuli made Cabinet reshuffle on October 7, 2017. IMF called on Tanzania to speed up reforms and spend more to prevent a slowdown of the economy.

Tanzanian president John Magufuli ordered the central bank to tighten controls on the movement of hard currency and take swift action against failing banks in a bid to tackle financial crimes and protect the local shilling currency.

The move comes as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) called on Tanzania to speed up reforms and spend more to prevent a slowdown in one of the world’s fastest growing economies.

Magufuli pledged to reform an economy hobbled by red tape and corruption and begin a programme to develop public infrastructure after he was elected in 2015.

“We now have some 58 banks in Tanzania, the (central) Bank of Tanzania should closely monitor these banks and take swift action against failing institutions. It’s better to have a few viable banks than many failing banks,” he said in a statement issued by his office.

“I also want restrictions on the use of U.S. dollars. As I speak, $1 million cash was confiscated at the ... (main) airport in Dar es Salaam and there is no explanation on the movement of this money into the country. We have to be careful.”

KENYA VOTED WORLD'S TOP SAFARI DESTINATION, AGAIN

Kenya has again been voted as the world’s leading safari destination by the World Travel Awards.

Kenya scooped the prestigious award during a grand ceremony that took place at JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Hotel in Vietnam on December 10.

It is the fourth time that Kenya has won the global accolade. Kenya bagged the award last year, in 2015 and 2013.

Kenya overcame fierce competition from other African safari destinations such as South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

Apart from the global win, this year, Kenya also scooped the Africa’s leading beach destination award, the Africa’s leading national park award and the Africa’s leading tourist board award from the World Travel Awards.

ZIMBABWE'S MNANGAGWA CALLS FOR END TO WESTERN SANCTIONS

Zimbabwe’s new President Emmerson Mnangagwa. He has called for the removal of Western sanctions on his government during a speech to ruling party officials.

Zimbabwe’s new President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday called for the removal of Western sanctions on his government during a speech to ruling party officials and said elections due in 2018 were nearer than “you expect”.

Mnangagwa, 75, became president last month after the military and ruling Zanu-PF turned against Robert Mugabe who had ruled the country for 37 years and was seen grooming his wife Grace to succeed him.

While the European Union removed sanctions on Zanu-PF officials, members of the military and some government-owned firms in 2014, the United States has kept a travel and economic embargo on several ruling party elites.

“We call for the unconditional lifting of the political and economic sanctions, which have crippled our national development,” Mnangagwa told a meeting of the Zanu-PF central committee in downtown Harare.

CRDB BANK SETS 700BN/- FOR INDUSTRIAL DRIVE

CRDB Bank, one of the largest banks in the country, said on Wednesday it will increase the lending amount to industrial sector. The bank said it will raise the amount from the current 15 per cent to 20 per cent to 700bn/- by next year.

The bank’s Managing Director, Dr Charles Kimei, said the increase set to enable industrialists to borrow more in a bid to implement the industrialisation talk. Dr Kimei said to beef up the industry lending portfolio “we have borrowed 650bn/- from international lenders” at competitive rate.

“Our strong balance sheet and rating enable us to secure the loan that will lend in long term for between 8 to 10 years” Dr Kimei said during the launching of the bank's fifth branch and the largest in Dodoma. The amount, according Dr Kimei, was lent from IFC, the investment arm of World Bank, Africa Development Bank, SwedeFund and European Investment Bank.

President John Magufuli, who was the chief guest of the event, praised CRDB move to increase the industry lending saying it helps lifting people out of poverty and economic growth. “I am told out of the bank’s 3.5tri/- loans 1.1tri/- was directed to agriculture and industry,” Mr Magufuli said.

The president said if all privatised parastatals were operating like CRDB, “we could have made big strides on development. Unfortunately, many [parastatals] are not performing.” He also called for banks, now 58 in the country, to go to rural areas where there is big number of unbankable population.

IMF APPLAUDS TANZANIA ECONOMY, IDENTIFIES CHALLENGES

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revealed that the Tanzania economy has grown strongly by 6.8 per cent in the first half of 2017.

A statement released by the IMF’s official, Mr Mauricio Villafuerte said a team from IMF visited Tanzania from November 30 to December 12, 2017 and held discussions on the seventh review under the Policy Support Instrument (PSI) programme that was approved on July 16, 2014 and on the macroeconomic policies and structural reforms that could underpin a successor arrangement.

According to Mr Villafuerte the preliminary data for the first half of 2017 released by the authorities has indicated that the economy grew at strong points. However, the IMF team explained that while good harvest is set to help support growth, other macroeconomic indicators lower-than-anticipated government spending and tax revenue collections, weak private sector credit growth and rising non-performing loans suggest that there are downward pressures on growth.

The team noted that the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) is engaged in rebasing the GDP statistics, an exercise that is required of all East African Community (EAC) countries. “In this context, the NBS will revisit its source data and compilation methodology, and the team looks forward to the revised data, which should help provide a clearer picture of economic growth,” reads part of the statement.

Addressing a procurement officers meeting here, Azania Bank Ltd Senior Manager in Retail Banking, Mr Jackson Lohay said that on the industrialisation window is already participating in the agenda. Mr Lohay said that ABL is providing funds to entities that are starting industrial activities, expanding their production lines and factories as well as to revive industries that had stopped production.

Mr Lohay noted that the bank that is owned by pension funds by 98 per cent was acting on President John Magufuli’s directive on industrialisation, starting with trade finance in two sugar industries in Morogoro. He unveiled that ABL is pulling together sugarcane growers and support them so that they produce well to supply enough and sustainable raw materials.

TEACHERS' BANK RISKS CLOSURE, SAYS PRESIDENT JOHN MAGUFULI

President John Magufuli has told teachers gathered in Dodoma for their annual general meeting on Thursday that their Mwalimu Commercial Bank (MCB) is among poor performing banks in the country, hence risks closure.

Officially opening the Tanzania Teachers' Union Annual General Meeting, President Magufuli said he was requested to launch the MCB, but when he passed through the bank’s financial reports available at the Bank of Tanzania (BOT), he realized that it was performing poorly hence he refused.

He told teachers to hold the Union’s leaders accountable on the two per cent monthly deductions from their salaries as contributions. He said his government is committed to pay outstanding 25bn/- for teachers, but reminded them to choose clean leaders.

MOHAMMED ENTERPRISES READY TO COOPERATE WITH GOVERNMENT ON SISAL ASSESSMENT

The Management of Mohammed Enterprises (T) Limited (MeTL) has expressed readiness to cooperate with government officials to assess development of its Sisal estates located at Mazinde, Mabogo and Kwalukongwe in Korogwe district, Tanga Region.

The commitment follows reports that Deputy Minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlement Development, Ms Angelina Mabula, has issued directives for revocation of tittle deeds of all undeveloped Sisal farms in the district and elsewhere in the country.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday, MeTL subsidiaries Manager, Mr Ndekirwa Nnyari said the company has undertaken major development at the farms since it acquired them in 2000 from Ralli Estates Limited which ran bankrupt.

“Soon after acquiring the estates, we installed new machinery, employed workers and started re-planting Sisal. Production of the cash crop has ever since increased from 480 tonnes in 2001 to 2,200 tonnes by last year,” he pointed out.

President John Magufuli has ordered Bank of Tanania to close all banks that are performing poorly and insisted there must be proper assessments of all financial institutions.

The Head of State has also ordered Finance and Planning Minister Dr Philip Mpango and Central Bank (BOT) officials to stop the dollarization since more than one currency can’t be used in a country.

He gave the directives while officially opening CRDB Bank Branch at LAPF Building in Dodoma on Wednesday and congratulated the financial institution for paying 19.5bn/- dividends to the government. He insisted that the government will no longer rescue poor performing banks since it has other crucial obligations to serve the wananchi.
