Initiative Expands Support for Tanzania’s Informal Food Sector

Dodoma, Tanzania - 19 May 2026: Stanbic Bank Tanzania, through the Stanbic Biashara Incubator, in partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and Said Salim Bakhresa & Company Limited (SSB), has expanded its RISE Mama Lishe programme to Dodoma, empowering 320 women and youth food entrepreneurs with business training, financial literacy skills and energy-efficient cooking stoves.

The Dodoma engagement marks another milestone in the national programme first launched in Dar es Salaam in November 2025. Since then, the initiative has reached entrepreneurs in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Kilimanjaro and Tanga, with Dodoma now serving as a strategic hub in broadening the programme’s national footprint.

The initiative aims to strengthen Tanzania’s informal food sector by helping entrepreneurs improve business operations, reduce operational costs and adopt cleaner, safer cooking solutions.

Supporting Inclusive Growth and Clean Cooking Adoption

Through the 2025–2026 cycle, Stanbic Bank and GIZ are targeting to empower 2,000 women and youth entrepreneurs through entrepreneurship training, financial literacy, clean cooking awareness and practical business support.

In Dodoma alone, 300 participating entrepreneurs will each receive an energy-efficient stove designed to reduce fuel consumption, lower smoke exposure and improve workplace safety.

Equity Group Holdings Plc has announced record financial results for the first quarter of 2026, reflecting strong growth driven by its technology-led transformation strategy and continued expansion of inclusive financial services across Africa.

The Group reported a 24% year-on-year increase in Profit After Tax (PAT), reaching Ksh 19.1 billion in Q1 2026 compared to Ksh 15.4 billion recorded during the same period in 2025. The strong performance underscores the continued success of the Group’s strategy to position itself as a resilient Pan-African financial services institution anchored on innovation, digital transformation, and customer-centric banking solutions.

Equity Group’s balance sheet expanded by 16% to Ksh 2.04 trillion, supported by sustained customer confidence and growing economic activity across its regional markets. Customer deposits increased by 13%, while net loans registered a 9% growth, further reinforcing the Group’s strong market position and expanding financial intermediation role across Africa.

The Group also achieved a major milestone in its regional expansion strategy, with regional subsidiaries now contributing 50% of Group banking profitability and accounting for 52% of total banking assets. The achievement highlights Equity’s continued evolution into a strong continental financial services champion with diversified growth across multiple African markets.

Strong growth was recorded across regional subsidiaries, led by Equity Bank Tanzania, which posted an outstanding 150% increase in Profit After Tax during the quarter. Equity Bank Rwanda followed with a 36% increase, while Equity Bank DRC recorded a 32% growth in profitability, reflecting the strength of the Group’s regional operations and expanding market footprint.

Under the leadership of Managing Director, Isabela Maganga, Equity Bank Tanzania emerged as the best-performing subsidiary in terms of profit growth. The remarkable performance reflects the bank’s continued focus on expanding access to financial services, accelerating digital banking adoption, and promoting financial inclusion across Tanzania.

KIGALI, RWANDA – May 18, 2026: NMB Bank Plc has secured strategic financing facilities worth a combined USD 180 million from International Finance Corporation (IFC), British International Investment (BII), and Norfund to expand lending to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), agribusinesses, women-led enterprises and youth-driven businesses across Tanzania.

The agreements, signed on the sidelines of the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali, comprise USD 100 million from IFC and USD 80 million jointly provided by BII and Norfund. The facilities are expected to strengthen NMB’s lending capacity and support the provision of longer-tenor, structured financing to businesses operating in key productive sectors of the economy.

NMB said the financing will help address growing demand for credit among growth-oriented enterprises, particularly those seeking working capital, investment funding and supply chain support. The facilities will also reinforce the bank’s broader commitment to responsible growth, financial inclusion and sustainable finance under its Medium-Term Strategic Plan 2026–2030.

KIGALI, RWANDA – May 17, 2026: Tanzania’s Minister for Information, Communication and Information Technology, Angellah Kairuki, has overseen the signing of a financing partnership worth more than TZS 40 billion between National Bank of Commerce (NBC) and British International Investment (BII) aimed at expanding access to financial services for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) across Tanzania.

The agreement, announced on the sidelines of the Africa CEO Forum 2026 held in Kigali over the weekend, will provide long-term financing over a five-year period to support business expansion, strengthen economic resilience and improve the competitiveness of Tanzanian businesses across key productive sectors.

Minister Kairuki attended the signing ceremony on behalf of the Government of Tanzania, which holds a 30 percent stake in NBC Bank. The event was also attended by senior NBC executives led by the bank’s Managing Director, Theobald Sabi, alongside Managing Director and Head of Africa at BII, Chris Chijiutomi.

Through the partnership, MSMEs will gain access to working capital, domestic and international trade finance services, and innovative financial solutions designed to help businesses scale and compete more effectively in regional markets.

GEITA, TANZANIA, 15 May 2026 – Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) has officially marked the completion of its 2025/2026 Graduate Trainee and Critical Skills Programme, reaffirming its long-term commitment to developing Tanzanian talent and strengthening local capacity within the mining sector.

The programme, which concluded on 14 May 2026, provided a full year of structured, hands-on professional development to a cohort of 35 Tanzanian graduates deployed across key technical and administrative departments at the mine.

Launched in June 2025, the initiative placed graduates in a wide range of disciplines including geology, electrical engineering, process plant instrumentation, survey, mine planning, metallurgy, records management, public relations and communications, among others. Participants gained practical exposure and real-world industry experience within one of Tanzania’s leading large-scale gold mining operations.

The programme forms part of GGML’s broader strategy to invest in Tanzanian human capital and support national workforce development priorities. With over 25 years of operations in Geita Region, the company has consistently aligned its skills development initiatives with government efforts aimed at enhancing youth employability and preparing graduates for competitive industries.

Dodoma, Tanzania – Stanbic Bank Tanzania has reinforced its health-sector Corporate Social Investment (CSI) footprint in Dodoma after donating medical supplies worth TZS 18 million to three major public health institutions serving thousands of patients across the region and beyond.

The support will benefit National Mental Health Hospital Mirembe, Dodoma Regional Referral Hospital, and Benjamin Mkapa Hospital — institutions that play a vital role in mental healthcare, regional referral services, and specialized medical treatment in Tanzania.

The donation was officially handed over during a CSI event graced by Dodoma Regional Commissioner, Hon. Rosemary Senyamule. The supplies included 300 hospital bed sheets, 150 surgical gloves, 450 syringes, and 90 delivery packs. According to the bank, the items will be distributed equally among the three hospitals to support daily medical operations, improve patient care, and enhance safety for frontline healthcare workers.Speaking during the handover ceremony, Stanbic Bank Tanzania Dodoma Branch Manager, Joan Mbise, said the donation reflects the bank’s long-term commitment to supporting communities through practical interventions that address real needs.

“Beyond handing over medical supplies, today’s event is a sign of our commitment to work with the Government and the communities we serve. We believe real development begins where we are — in our hospitals, in our health facilities, and in the lives of citizens served every day,” she said.

 

Joan noted that Stanbic Bank’s community investment agenda is guided by four core pillars: health, education, financial education, and environment. She explained that the bank prioritizes these sectors because they form a strong foundation for sustainable national development.

She added that the Dodoma donation falls under Stanbic’s health pillar, which focuses on improving access to healthcare, strengthening service delivery, and contributing to the wellbeing of communities.

DSE HOSTS UGANDA SOVEREIGN SUKUK ROADSHOW TO PROMOTE ISLAMIC CAPITAL MARKETS IN EAST AFRICA

Dar es Salaam, May 12, 2026 – The Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE), in collaboration with Uganda’s Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development and Yusra Sukuk Company Limited, hosted the Uganda Sovereign Sukuk Roadshow aimed at strengthening regional investment collaboration and promoting Islamic capital markets across East Africa.

The roadshow provided investors, capital market stakeholders and financial institutions with an opportunity to gain deeper insights into the Uganda Infrastructure Sovereign Sukuk valued at €205 million, alongside an additional Green Shoe Option of €30 million, as part of the broader €495 million Sukuk issuance programme.

Speaking during the session, the Deputy Permanent Secretary at Uganda’s Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Mr. Patrick Ocailap, said the initiative is intended to diversify infrastructure financing sources while attracting both regional and international investors seeking Shariah-compliant investment opportunities.

Among the key features of the Sukuk are its asset-backed and tradable structure, offering enhanced security and flexibility for investors.

In addition, the Sukuk’s coupon payments and redemption amounts are protected through Takaful insurance arrangements, while the rating process by the International Islamic Rating Agency (IIRA) is currently underway.

To further enhance investor appeal, the Government of Uganda has also provided tax exemptions on investors’ return payments linked to the Sukuk programme.

Akizungumza katika Mkutano Mkuu wa Sita wa Wanahisa wa benki hiyo, Mwenyekiti wa Bodi ya Wakurugenzi wa Mwanga Hakika Bank, Ridhuan Mringo, alisema mafanikio hayo yametokana na ufanisi wa mikakati ya biashara, nidhamu ya kifedha pamoja na ushirikiano mzuri kati ya menejimenti, wafanyakazi na wadau wa benki hiyo.

Alisema benki hiyo itaendelea kuimarisha huduma zake za kifedha na kuongeza ubunifu katika bidhaa zake ili kuendana na mahitaji ya soko na kuongeza ushindani katika sekta ya benki nchini.

“Faida kabla ya kodi ilifikia Sh18.28 bilioni kutoka Sh14.6 bilioni mwaka 2024, sawa na ukuaji wa asilimia 25. Ongezeko hili linaashiria ufanisi katika kuongeza mapato na kudhibiti gharama za uendeshaji,” amesema Mringo.

Aidha, alisema benki hiyo imeendelea kutoa mikopo inayochochea maendeleo ya sekta za uzalishaji huku ikizingatia athari za kimazingira na kijamii katika maamuzi yake ya kifedha.

Mwanga, Kilimanjaro — Mwanga Hakika Bank (MHB) has recorded strong growth across key financial indicators in 2025, reinforcing its position among Tanzania’s fastest-growing banks.

According to the bank’s latest financial statements, total assets increased by 44.9 percent to Sh470.8 billion in 2025, up from Sh324.9 billion recorded in 2024. The milestone reflects the lender’s rapid expansion and growing confidence from customers and investors alike.

The impressive growth was largely driven by a significant rise in lending activity, with loans to customers climbing by 53 percent to Sh305.3 billion from Sh199.5 billion in the previous year. Customer deposits also registered robust growth, increasing by 47.8 percent to Sh317.6 billion from Sh214.9 billion.

Speaking on the performance, the bank’s leadership said the results demonstrate increasing trust among customers who continue to both save and borrow through the institution.

“What this tells us is that customers’ confidence in our bank is high. They have not only entrusted us with their deposits but have also continued borrowing from us,” said the bank’s management during the presentation of the results.

The bank attributed the growth to its strategic focus on operational efficiency and customer-centered banking solutions aimed at delivering stress-free banking experiences.

The strong balance sheet performance also translated into improved shareholder returns, with profit after tax rising to Sh13.2 billion in 2025 from Sh9.9 billion recorded in 2024.

“This year, the Bank successfully reached half a trillion in total assets, a remarkable milestone achieved within just five years of operation. This achievement reflects the Bank’s strong growth trajectory and demonstrates the increasing confidence and trust we continue to earn in the Tanzanian market,” the bank stated.
