Already the Business Registration and Licensing Agency (BRELA) is connected to the fibre optic and is providing services online, President Jakaya Kikwete said in Dar es Salaam.

President Kikwete made the observation during a function to lay the foundation stone for a commercial and residential complex project being implemented by National Housing Corporation (NHC), dubbed ‘Morocco Square,’ which will house, among others, the largest shopping mall in the East Africa region.

In Tanzania, only 19 per cent of the adult population has access to formal services, compared to an average of 29 per cent for sub-Saharan Africa as a whole (source: World Bank). Being financially excluded is linked to income level: the richest 20 per cent of adults in developing countries are more than twice as likely to have a formal account as the poorest 20 per cent. Yet, while the poor do not have the same access to financial products as wealthier individuals, their need for financial services may be even greater (source: World Bank).

ANGELA MERKEL IS THE FAVOURITE TO WIN THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

German Chancellor Angela Merkel meets with U.S. President
Barack Obama in the Oval Office at the White House on
May 2, 2014 in Washington, DC.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is tipped to win this year's Nobel Peace Prize for her leadership on the refugee crisis in Europe.

Pope Francis was the bookies' favourite until recently to pick up the prestigious prize, but odds have shifted over the weekend after a Merkel was named as the favourite by a key prize predictor.

Kristian Berg Harpviken, director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), publishes a closely watched shortlist of likely winner each year and 2015's list is topped by Merkel, the Telegraph reports.

Merkel is now favourite, with Ladbrokes offering odds of 2/1 that she will pick up the prize.

The Telegraph quotes Mr Harpviken as saying: "Angela Merkel will get the peace prize. She is the one who really took moral leadership and who turned the debate on refugee issues in a European context entirely around."

THE OIL PRICE IS KILLING ROLLS-ROYCE AND IT'S CUTING 400 JOBS

Rolls-Royce is bailing out its Marine division.
Rolls-Royce is slashing 400 jobs from its marine division, blaming the fall in the price of oil and a need to cut costs.

The engineering group announced the cuts in a statement on Monday.

The cuts follow 600 factory job going earlier this year. The new round of redundancies will reportedly hit factory managers.

Mikael Makinen, president of the company's marine division, said in a statement on Monday: "Reducing our workforce is never an easy decision, but the continued weak oil price, and the need to become more competitive, means it is necessary, if we are to build a strong base from which we can successfully grow this business in the future."

Rolls-Royce's Marine division services and supplies the oil and gas industry and benefitted from the boom in the sector up to 2013. But the collapse in oil prices last year has led to a slowdown, which has a knock-on effect for Rolls.
