Benki ya Wananchi ya Dar es Salaam (DCB) imetoa mikopo yenye dhamani ya Sh.Bilioni 363.3 kwa wajasiriamali 362,507 kati ya hao wajasiriamali wadogo kupitia vikundi ni 156,718 katika Manispaa za Jiji la Dar es Salaam.

BAM TO RENOVATE AND EXTEND KILIMANJARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IN TANZANIA

Bunnik, the Netherlands, 13 March 2015 – BAM International has been awarded a €37 million design and construct contract for the rehabilitation and extension of Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) in Tanzania, which is situated between Moshi and Arusha in northern Tanzania. BAM expects to complete the works for Kilimanjaro Airports Development Company (KADCO) in 2017.

The scope of work comprises the refurbishment of the terminal building (built in 1971), the construction of a new parallel taxiway, the extension of the existing apron and taxiways, including repairs on the runway, as well as the drainage and sewage works. Furthermore BAM will install new airfield ground lighting and floodlights along the apron.

Funding was partly granted by the Dutch fund ORIO for the development and implementation of this project. The remaining part is guaranteed by commercial financing arranged by the Government of Tanzania.

Kilimanjaro International Airport is one of the four international airports in Tanzania and is the second largest airport after Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam for which BAM has completed two rehabilitation projects already and is currently constructing the new Terminal 3 building.

ZIMBABWE SEEKS SOUTH AFRICAN BANK LOANS TO HELP EASE CRUNCH

Zimbabwe’s government is seeking lines of credit from South African banks to help ease a liquidity crunch that’s holding back growth in the southern African nation, Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa said.

Authorities are seeking loan facilities from private banks rather than financial aid to help overcome the crisis, Chinamasa said in an interview in the South African capital, Pretoria.

“We are looking for lines of credit by South African financial institutions to our commercial banks to enable lending for productive purposes,” he said.

Chinamasa is accompanying President Robert Mugabe, 91, on his first state visit to South Africa in 21 years to help strengthen economic and political ties with its biggest trading partner. Zimbabwe is facing a foreign-currency shortage, partly due to a lack of investment as the government’s so-called indigenization laws deter companies. The rules require foreign and white-owned companies to cede 51% stakes to black Zimbabweans or the government’s empowerment agency.

STANDARD BANK INTRODUCES BIOMETRIC MOBILE BANKING

April 9, 2015; Johannesburg. Standard Bank has introduced a biometric mobile banking solution that allows Apple iPhone and iPad users to use their device’s fingerprint scanner to sign into the financial service’s company’s mobile banking application.

The update makes use of the TouchID functionality built into the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus as well as the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3.

According to Standard Bank, a number of international banks have already introduced similar features into their apps. Quoting Juniper Research, the bank says global downloads of biometric-enabled apps will hit the 6m mark this year. This figure, it says, will increase to more than 770m downloads per year by 2019.

The bank’s head of mobile banking, Magnus Taljaard, says in a statement that the new biometric identification feature underwent rigorous testing in order for the company to ensure a “safe and robust solution”.

South Africa’s economy could have been 10 percent larger if power shortages hadn’t stifled growth and investment and put the nation’s debt at risk of being cut to junk, economists’ estimates show.

Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd., which supplies about 95 percent of the country’s electricity, is rationing supply because it can’t meet demand from aging plants following years of underinvestment. Its chairman stepped down last month after losing the board’s support over a decision to suspend the chief executive officer and three other top managers, leaving it without permanent leadership.

South Africa’s estimated economic expansion of 2 percent this year could have been at least 1 percentage point higher had it not been for the cuts, said Dawie Roodt, chief economist at Efficient Group Ltd. Rolling blackouts have curbed mining and manufacturing, both knocked by strikes that limited 2014 growth to the slowest pace since a 2009 recession, and prompted rating downgrades.

PPP SUCCESS IN RWANDA SHOWS POTENTIAL FOR GREATER SELF-RELIANCE

Twenty-one years after its genocide, Rwanda ranks 46th in the world for ease of doing business according to the World Bank, four spots below its former coloniser Belgium. This is flattering. And the rush with which international lenders financed its energy utility’s first solar public private partnership (PPP) demonstrates that this ranking is not empty academic musing. Yet, in the same manner in which Rwandans drew on their own internal reserves of strength and resilience to rebuild their nation, so too should they draw on their own reserves of capital to build the nation’s infrastructure.

Within just 12 months of an agreement being reached between the state energy utility and private developer GigaWatt Global, an approximately $24m, 8.5 MW solar plant was financed, constructed and connected to the grid. Lenders came from Europe and the US. The project demonstrates that PPPs in Rwanda can be successful mechanisms in transferring upfront costs and construction, delay and operations and maintenance risks from state-owned institutions to private developers for the delivery of infrastructure on time, on budget and to specification. The project demonstrates that Rwanda is an attractive destination for foreign direct investment.

SAUDI STRATEGY TO RETAIN OIL DOMINANCE

In the face of lower oil prices the world’s biggest energy players have slashed spending, cut jobs and pulled back on the number of rigs drilling for oil and gas.

But as the oil price rout has forced companies into a deep retrenchment, Saudi Arabia’s energy behemoth has set its sights on longer term ambitions. After all, the kingdom has a $750bn buffer to allow it to do so.

To be sure, Saudi Aramco is also using the downturn to “sharpen” its fiscal discipline, according to its chief executive Khalid Al Falih, negotiating better deals with services companies and other contractors to trim spending.

But it is making a bet that running its energy sector hard, investing in oil, gas and refining and pushing for new business in troubled times, will enable Opec’s largest producer to retain its dominance.

BG GROUP'S CEO COULD POCKET $43 MILLION JUST AFTER TWO MONTHS AFTER TAKING THE JOB

BG Group's CEO Helge Lund started the job just two months ago.

And now, Lund could take home as much as $43 million in compensation, Bloomberg’s Mikael Holter reports.

On Tuesday, Royal Dutch Shell announced it is taking over the British gas company for about $70 billion.

As part of the deal, Lund's package includes one year's gross salary pay and 30% of base pay if he leaves the company.

The same applies to other directors because its penned in their contracts, according to Reuters.

Lund's compensation created controversy before he even started. Last December, investors pressured BG Group into slashing his first year pay, Reuters reported. 

BRITAIN JUST DISCOVERED 100 BILLION BARRELS OF OIL NEAR GATWICK AIRPORT

UK Oil & Gas Investments, the exploration, development, and production group, just revealed that it discovered about 100 billion barrels of oil near Gatwick Airport.

The group said in a regulatory statement that up to 100 billion barrels of oil could be onshore beneath the South of England, after it drilled a well at Horse Hill near Gatwick Airport, West Sussex, last year. The number comes from the fact that UKOG said that the local area could hold 158 million barrels of oil per square mile and from management estimates confirmed this morning on the BBC.

"Drilling the deepest well in the basin in 30 years, together with the ability to use concepts, techniques, and technology unavailable in the 1980s, has provided new cutting-edge data and interpretations to comprehensively change the understanding of the area's potential oil resources," Stephen Sanderson, the CEO of UKOG, said in a statement.

DCB COMMERCIAL BANK BOARD PROPOSES TSH1.8 BILLION DIVIDENDS

Dar es Salaam. April 9, 2015. DCB Commercial Bank, plc shareholders are expected to pocket a total of Tsh1.8 billion after the bank's board of directors recommended the amount for the 2014 annual dividends.

The Bank board chairman Paul Rupia said the amount is equivalent to Tsh27 per issued and fully paid shares. The company policy on dividends is to allocate 50 per cent of annual profit.

The 2014 annual dividends are almost double the dividends amount paid by the bank to its share holders five years ago. However, the 2014 amount is less than Tsh1.9 billion dividends paid during the year 2012.

Speaking with the media in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Rupia said during the year ended December 31, 2014, DCB Commercial bank recorded a profit after tax of Tsh3.77 billion, an increase of 2 per cent compared with the year 2013.

“Since its inception 13 years ago, DCB Commercial Bank's performance has been impressive with annual upwards in profit, assets and customer deposits,” Rupia said in a press conference yesterday.

DAR ES SALAAM STOCK EXCHANGE TURNOVER SHOOTS UP IN Q1, 2015

The Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) turnover has increased almost two-folds by 93 per cent to 278bn/- in the first quarter 2015 from 144bn/- of the previous quarter that ended in December 2014.

The DSE Chief Executive Officer, Mr Moremi Marwa, said in a statement in Dar es Salaam that year on year basis, the first quarter’s turnover was almost 7 times compared to the corresponding quarter of only 42bn/-.

“The DSE 2015 first quarter has been very successful. Once again for the seventh consecutive quarters, DSE was ranked as one of the exchanges in Africa that delivers high returns to investors on its listed stocks,” he said.

“Wealth enhancement as measured by increase in market investment value and liquidity levels, as measured by market turnover or volume of transactions, increased at relatively significant levels.”

Rising food prices pushed up the annual headline inflation rate to 4.3 per cent in March, a slight increase from the previous month’s 4.2 per cent, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced in Dar es Salaam.

The statistics body attributed the inflation rise to the increase in food prices, citing some of the food items that contributed to the increase as rice by 19.9 per cent, cassava flour by 8.3 per cent, meat by 6.2 per cent, fish by 15.5 per cent, sugar by 4.4 per cent and beans by 5.3 per cent.

Addressing reporters, NBS Director of Population Census and Social Statistics Ephraim Kwesigabo, said that food and non-alcoholic beverages inflation rate for the period under review has increased to 5.9 per cent from 4.9 per cent recorded in February 2015.

WASIRA SUSPENDS THREE RUBADA OFFICIALS OVER 2BN/- FRAUD

Rufiji Basin Development Authority (RUBADA) Acting Director General, Alloyce Masanja and two directors have been suspended indefinitely over alleged embezzlement of over 2bn/-.

Other officials suspended are Planning and Investment Director Tabu Ndatulu and Finance and Administration Director Filozi Mayayi.

Agriculture, Foods and Cooperatives Minister Stephen Wasira, addressing reporters in Dar es Salaam, said the decision to suspend the trio came following investigations in connection with mismanagement and corruption allegations that were levelled against the authority’s management.

Besides suspension, the trio’s fate for either a court trial or not will be determined by Prevention and Combating Corruption Bureau (PCCB) and Police.

FASTJET PASSENGER STATISTICS FOR MARCH 2015

9 April 2015 - fastjet operations in Tanzania carried a total of 56,808  passengers and achieved a load factor of 70%.  This represents an increase of 66% in the number of passengers carried and a 3% increase in the load factor, compared with the same month last year.

Punctuality for the month remained excellent, with 91% of flights arriving on time ^{Note 3}. This was despite increased aircraft utilisation with additional flights added to the network.

Ed Winter, Chief Executive Officer of fastjet plc, said:

This clearly demonstrates the growth that fastjet has achieved as our low-cost model continues to stimulate the Tanzanian air travel market. DAR ES SALAAM PORT TO BECOME NATION'S BIGGEST REVENUE CONTRIBUTOR

Minister of East African Cooperation, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe.

The Dar es Salaam Port will in three years time lead in contributing to the national income if the ongoing improvements to enhance efficiency at the port are timely implemented.

The Minister of East African Cooperation Dr Harrison Mwakyembe said this in Dar es Salaam after inaugurating the first 2015 Economic Freedom of Tanzania Conference organised by Uhuru Initiative for Policy and Education.

“The government commitments to remove all red tape at the Dar es Salaam port and adoption of latest Information and Communication Technology (ICT) are progressively changing the port performance to international standards,” he said.

Dr Mwakyembe cited among others, the introduction of the Single Customs Territory (SCT) and the recent launching of the three freight wagon train routes to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda.

NEW TANGA PORT PROJECT REACHES ADVANCED STAGE

The implementation of the multi-trillion Mwambani Economic Corridor Project in Tanga Region has reached an advanced stage after receiving support from not only the government of Tanzania, but also in the East and Central African countries.

Co-director of the company manning the project, Mr Cuthbert Tenga, reported that the project, estimated to cost over 53 trillion/-, was in good course as they have secured all the necessary required documents to start the project.

The project, to involve construction of a deep sea and free port at Mwambani in Tanga City and a new heavy haul standard gauge railway from there, would be operated by MWAPORC, an acronym for Mwambani Port and Railway Corridor, a Tanzanian Project Company.
