DIAMOND TRUST BANK PROFIT HITS $62.2 MILLION ON GROWTH FROM REGIONAL OUTLETS

Diamond Trust Bank has announced a 9.6 per cent increase in after tax profit boosted by strong performance of its regional operations.

The Nairobi Securities Exchange-listed bank earned Ksh5.7 billion ($62.2 million) net profit last year compared to Ksh5.2 billion ($56.7 million) reported in 2013.

“The group results have benefited from the continuing growth of share of results from DTB’s subsidiaries in Tanzania, Uganda and Burundi,” said DTB’s chief executive Nasim Devji Thursday in a statement.

AfDB APPROVES $123 MILLION FOR MOMBASA-MARIAKANI ROAD

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $123 million loan to Kenya for upgrading 41.7 kilometres of the Mombasa- Mariakani highway.

The project will see the road upgraded to a dual carriage consisting of flyovers, bus bays, service roads, truck parking, pedestrian foot bridges, walkways, street lighting and associated soft components.

KfW Development Bank of Germany, European Investment Bank and the Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund will also co-finance the project.

Dar es Salaam, Tuesday, March 10, 2015: A total of Sh47 billion out of Sh77 billion deposited at the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) for the purpose of paying road contractors is either missing or cannot be accounted for.

The Controller and Auditor General (CAG) says over Sh33 billion that was set aside for road projects in the 2011/2012 financial year also cannot be accounted for.

This means that a total of Sh80billion is either missing or cannot be traced as there is no proof of payment purportedly made to contractors.

In a special audit, the CAG reveals that Parliament was lied to about the expenditure of Sh252 billion earmarked for the construction of new roads.

The amount was instead diverted to pay road contractors and consultants, according to the January 2015 CAG report.

Impeccable sources told The Citizen in Dar es Salaam yesterday that Sh3,048,365,229 was not accounted for from the total amount of Sh252,975,000,000.

DONORS TO RELEASE SH80 BILLION OF BUDGET SUPPORT

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s Development Partners have agreed to release a further $44 million (about Sh80 billion) through the General Budget Support (GBS) after they were satisfied by measures taken over the Tegeta escrow account scam.

According to a joint press statement, the government and Budget Support Development Partners (BSDPs) held a successful dialogue meeting on Wednesday with the view of resuming budget support arrangements before the end of the current fiscal year.

The statement elaborated that the Development Partners are envisaging further disbursement decisions following their respective procedures; or in case of multilateral institutions preparing proposals to their respective boards of directors.

During the meeting, according to the statement, the government confirmed that it will continue to handle the IPTL issue including ongoing processes and investigations in line with good governance principles.

Dar es Salaam. Nearly four years down the road, Tanzanians will finally get to know the truth about the Swiss billions that are allegedly hidden in the secret bank accounts of local politicians, businessmen and public servants.

Attorney General George Masaju told The Citizen last month that the probe report was ready but the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) ordered that the findings be tabled in Parliament next week.

The report is highly anticipated, given that it will reveal who owns what in offshore bank accounts. It will also set in motion legal action against the suspects.

LACK OF INFRASTRUCTURE HITS DEVELOPMENT OF SATELLITE CITY IN KIGAMBONI

Absence of basic infrastructure at Dege Eco Village in Kigamboni is slowing development of the satellite township and developers are now requesting the government to supply the area with water, roads and energy.

National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and Azimio Estate Housing Limited, who are jointly developing Sh990 billion ($550 million) Dege Eco Village, made the request through the Parliamentary Steering Committee which visited the project’s site at the weekend.

The Speaker of the Parliament Ms Anne Makinda who is also chairperson of the committee, led members to the project site where they were told that for such projects to be meaningful, they need reliable and advanced supply of water, electricity and well developed roads.

END RED TAPE, JAPAN INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION AGENCY ADVISES TANZANIA

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s bureaucratic procedures in the registration of businesses is bad to investors, and more specifically those from Japan, it was said in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

The chief representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Tanzania, Mr Onishi Yasunori said for Tanzania to attract an increased number of Japanese investors, the country must reduce the number of institutions dealing with business registration.

“These issues normally discourage investors and the government should reduce the procedures if it wants to attract an increasing number of investors,” he said calling upon Tanzania to change various policies pertaining to business and investing.

According to the World Bank’s Doing Business Report, it requires 26 procedures in Tanzania for one to register a firm. Defining procedures to be any interaction of the company founders with external parties (including government agencies, lawyers, auditors or notaries), the World Bank’s report ranks Tanzania the poorest in this category in East Africa. In Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda, the same takes three, eight, 10 and 15 procedures respectively.

A City grandee in charge of handing out bonuses to Barclays directors has been told to step down immediately by one of the UK’s largest investor bodies.

The call for the immediate departure of Sir John Sunderland, who is chairman of the Barclays’ remuneration committee, is being made by the Local Authority Pension Fund Forum (LAPFF) – which unites 64 public sector pension funds with combined assets of £150bn.

Kieran Quinn, chair of LAPPF, said: “Sir John Sunderland must go from the Barclays board immediately. It is inexplicable how Barclays can have gone back on its promise to the 2014 AGM that Sir John would step down. Having messed up remuneration for 2013, Sir John has in fact stayed on as chair and presided over another year of still unacceptably high pay for 2014, and is still in place in March 2015. It’s nothing short of misleading shareholders.”

NEW CREDIT SUISSE BOSS FACES STIFF CHALLENGE IN ASIA

(Reuters) - Incoming Credit Suisse (CSGN.VX) boss Tidjane Thiam is expected to focus on private banking in Asia while aggressively cutting jobs at its investment bank, as he aims to repeat the success in the region of his old employer, Prudential (PRU.L).

Thiam could slash 3,000 jobs from Credit Suisse's investment bank, or 15 percent of staff globally, and cut 150 billion Swiss francs (100 billion pounds) ($149 billion) of assets from the bank's fixed income, commodities and currencies business as part of that shift, analysts at JPMorgan said.

TANZANIA TO INTRODUCE ELECTRONIC INTEGRATED LAND MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM IN 2015

On 16th March 2015, Tanzania will open tenders for the implementation of an electronic Integrated Land Management Information System (ILMS) to allow electronic updating, processing, storage and retrieval of land records and information, in order to avoid double registration of land and ensure payment of all related taxes.

The annoucement was made by the Tanzania Minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development William Lukuvi, who indicated that hopefully the system will run at the pilot stage in the Coastal Region of Tanzania before end of the year.

The phase one of the project is estimated to be for 24 months plus 12 months for System Maintenance and support.

Seven other zones should be implemented later.

In Uganda a similar pilot project has resulted in 500,000 land titles being converted into digital copies, making the country a success story in Sub-Sahara Africa for Land Information System implementation.

A recent Tanzanian delegation led by Minister Lukuvi visted Uganda to learn the best practices in relation to ILMS.

 Stanbic Bank Tanzania has officially launched banking through electronic channels allowing customers the ease and convenience of banking from their phone or computer.

“We have worked to ensure that banking through E-channels is safe, reliable and convenient even for first time users. Through this service, we are improving the lives of our customers and making banking hassle free,” Farha Mohammed, Head of Electronic Channels at Stanbic Bank Tanzania said.

The Stanbic Bank customer needs to merely register online using their Customer ID or information. After registration, a customer can check balances, forex rates, statement, pay utility bills like LUKU and Dawasco, make payments to beneficiaries and mobile wallets and purchase airtime anytime among other things.

AfDB BOARD APPROVES THE BILL AND MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION TRUST FUND

The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank Group on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 in Abidjan approved the establishment of the Bill and Melinda Gates Trust Fund to be hosted by the Bank.

The Fund’s US $2.4 million initial contribution will support forward-thinking on the issue of concessional finance in development by an African Development Fund (ADF) Policy Lab. It would also support other future Bank activities.

It is the first bilateral fund with a non-sovereign entity, and the first bilateral fund with the Foundation aimed to provide structure to the long-standing collaboration with the Bank and scale up areas of intervention.

The Bank currently manages about 39 trust funds most of which are depleted.

There was overwhelming support for the collaboration, which fits squarely with the Bank’s Ten Year Strategy. The Strategy looks to engage in strategic partnerships to disseminate knowledge and lead new policy initiatives.

GOING GLOBAL: HOW THIS NIGERIAN GAME DEVELOPER BUILT HIS ENTERPRISE

A Nigerian mobile game developer, Gamsole, is setting a high standard for future African gaming companies. Six months after its induction, in 2012, and under the leadership of CEO Abiola Elijah Olaniran, the company had already amassed an impressive player base of three million.

Gamsole develops a wide array of entertaining and educational games for Windows Phone and Windows 8, usually around an African theme. In 2014 it was one of five companies to receive a grant from the Microsoft 4Afrika Initiative, and the company is growing quickly. Today over 10 million Gamesole games have already been downloaded.

Olaniran spoke to How we made it in Africa about his journey as a software developer, the primary ingredient for his success, and his entrepreneurial advice for others.

What was the inspiration behind starting Gamsole?

This may sound like your cliché software developer, tech junkie story, but I actually started game development out of curiosity. I say this because my journey into technology only started because I was curious about it. I grew up in Lagos surrounded by all this technology and gadgets, things I kept trying to make sense of. I think my foray into software really started when I began visiting Microsoft for technical insight.

AIRLINE FLYDUBAI INCREASING ITS BUSINESS ON THE AFRICAN CONTINENT

United Arab Emirates’ low-cost airline Flydubai is increasing its flights to several key destinations in northern and eastern Africa, including South Sudan and Burundi. Last year the carrier launched six new routes to region, doubling its network.

According to Flydubai’s CEO Ghaith Al Ghaith, the airline is the first UAE carrier to serve Bujumbura (Burundi), Juba (South Sudan) and Zanzibar (Tanzania). “We have seen strong demand for travel across our network in Africa,” he said in a media statement.

Djibouti was Flydubai’s first destination in Africa. Today it flies to 12 cities, including Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Kigali (Rwanda), Entebbe (Uganda) and Khartoum (Sudan). It is also the first low-cost airline to offer a business class option to Dubai from destinations such as Juba.

The Flydubai’s cargo transportation has also seen increased demand from the continent, with Juba amongst one of its busiest cargo routes globally.

The airline, currently offering five flights a week to South Sudan’s Juba, has announced that it will soon offer daily flights to the capital. And Burundi’s capital Bujumbura will also see frequency of flights increase from two to three a week.

UGANDA ANNOUNCES FIRST PETROLEUM EXPLORATION LICENSING ROUND

The Government of Uganda has announced the Country's first competitive licensing round for petroleum exploration for 6 blocks (Turaco, Kanywantaba, Ngassa, Taitai& Karuka, Mvule and Ngagi) in the Albertine region.

The licensing round is expected to conclude with the award of exploration licenses by the end of 2015.

FNB TANZANIA CONDUCTS A TRADE FINANCE SEMINAR FOR TANZANIAN EXPORTERS AND IMPORTERS

Over 70 Tanzanian exporters and importers have benefited from the capacity building on the secrets of the game that has been facilitated by the First National Bank Tanzania (FNB).

The one day Trade Finance Seminar that was conducted at the Serena Hotel on Wednesday this week was facilitated by internationally acknowledged experts in the areas of economic analysis and corporate banking.

Earlier welcoming attendants to the seminar Mr. Sylvester Selepe, FNB Treasurer said that exporters and importers in Tanzania have been realizing some losses in their businesses not because of lack of control but even more because of lacking the requisite skills.

TANZANIA WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS, MARCH 7, 2015

Tanzania Women of Achievement Awards (TWAA) pays tribute to the most exceptional and achieving women in the country who have not only achieved success in their own respective fields but who have made a significant difference in their communities and society as a whole. 

All Tanzanians are considered for the Awards provided they are based within the geographical boundaries of the country.

The Awards provide a wonderful opportunity to recognize and applaud women who are helping to reshape Tanzania for the better. 

The ceremony took place on 7th March 2015, a day before the International Women’s Day (8th March 2013) and is not only an inspirational occasion but also the best and most enjoyable networking events in the annual calendar. The schedule allows time to make new contacts as well as a chance to enjoy a series of presentations, which inspire, motivate and celebrate female success.

The award is followed by a mentorship program that engages young emerging women leaders from different regions across the country paired with women executives in business and politics as mentors for one month. The young mentees are empowered with needed tools to develop their leadership skills so as to help them instill a positive change in their communities.

The awards were launched in 2009 and take place bi-annually.

Japan imetoa msaada huo ikiwa ni sehemu ya mchango wake katika shule mpya ya msingi Kakuni ambayo Waziri Mkuu Mizengo Pinda alianzisha wazo la kuijenga kama njia ya kumshukuru Mungu na kuwashukuru wananchi waliosaidia kumfikisha hapo alipo. Waziri Mkuu Pinda alisoma darasa la kwanza hadi la nne katika shule ya msingi Kakuni mwaka 1957 hadi 1960.

SWALA TANZANIA LAUNCHES TRUST TO EMPOWER COMMUNITIES

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Swala Oil and Gas (Tanzania) plc (“Swala”) has announced the launch of Swala Energy Trust Company Limited (the “Trust”). The Trust owns 7.5 million shares in Swala and will invest profits from the gradual sale of these shares to support and uplift the welfare of communities where Swala operates.

A first of its kind in the East African region, the trust is a further development to the successful Initial Public Offer prospectus (IPO) launched last year which was oversubscribed by 39 percent.

The Trust, which is designed to be independent of Swala, is overseen by a board of directors that have considerable experience in this area. The trust owns 7.5 million shares in Swala that, at today’s market price, are worth nearly 49 billion shillings. These shares will be used to generate venture capital to finance community-oriented development projects in Swala’s areas of operations. The trustees of the Trust will be entitled to sell up to 10% of the 7.5 million shares every year to support these investments, and will work closely with local and existing structures to run a variety of programs that will benefit local communities.

The Trust is currently conducting a study to establish key partners and identify specific community needs around Swala’s areas of operations.
