VODACOM AND DAR ES SALAAM BASKETBALL LEAGUE CELEBRATE PLAYERS’ AWARDS NIGHT

The President of Dar es Salaam Basketball Association (BD), Mr. Shendu Hamis Mwagalla (left), presents a certificate of recognition to Ms. Gemma Kamara, Head of Pricing and Customer Segments at Vodacom Tanzania PLC, as a token of appreciation for the company’s contribution to the development of basketball in Tanzania.

Dar es Salaam, October 13, 2025 — Vodacom Tanzania PLC, in partnership with the Dar es Salaam Basketball League (BDL), hosted a special awards gala in Dar es Salaam to mark the conclusion of the 2025 basketball season. The event celebrated the achievements of players, teams, and stakeholders who participated throughout the season, while highlighting the positive impact of Vodacom’s investment in promoting sports and youth development in Tanzania.

This year’s league featured a total of 277 teams, both men’s and women’s, competing at the Don Bosco Oysterbay Court, which was recently renovated by Vodacom as part of its commitment to nurturing talent and inspiring youth through sports. Awards and prizes were presented to the season’s champions, as well as to outstanding male and female players who demonstrated discipline, creativity, and sportsmanship on the court.

Speaking at the event, Gemma Kamara, Head of Pricing and Customer Segments at Vodacom Tanzania, said:

“For Vodacom, this partnership with BDL is more than just sports sponsorship. It’s about engaging with the community and empowering young people to realize their potential. We’ve learned a lot from this league — watching young people grow, gain confidence, and use sports as a foundation for personal and social development. Vodacom remains committed to empowering youth through sports, education, and technology as key pillars to help them achieve their dreams.”

On his part, Mpoki Mwakipale, Secretary of the Tanzania Basketball Federation, expressed appreciation for Vodacom’s continued contribution to the development of basketball in the country.

“The collaboration between BDL and Vodacom has transformed the game. We’ve witnessed tremendous improvement in enthusiasm, discipline, and true competitiveness. It’s inspiring to see our young players reaching new levels,” Mwakipale said.

Nadia Samir, a player from Don Bosco Troncatti, shared her experience, noting the importance of improved facilities:

“One of the biggest challenges we face as players is the lack of proper sports infrastructure. But this year, we were delighted to see major improvements at the Don Bosco Court thanks to Vodacom’s sponsorship. The league was more competitive than ever, and we hope to see more sponsors come forward to support basketball development in Tanzania.”

In the men’s category, Dar City Basketball Team emerged as champions after an intense final series against JKT, securing a TZS 10 million prize from Vodacom. Meanwhile, in the women’s division, DB Lioness Basketball Team dominated the court to claim the 2025 BDL Championship title, also receiving TZS 10 million in recognition of their outstanding performance.

Through initiatives like this, Vodacom continues to demonstrate its commitment to being a development partner for Tanzanian youth — using sports, education, and technology as powerful tools to build a confident and visionary generation with hope for a better future.

The awards gala brought together Vodacom representatives, BDL officials, sports stakeholders, players’ families, and members of the media. The night was filled with music, excitement, and celebration — marking a joyful conclusion to a season where young Tanzanians turned their passion for basketball into purpose and achievement.
