Dar es Salaam, August 6, 2025 – The National Bank of Commerce (NBC) has been named Tanzania’s Best Digital Bank for Consumers 2025 by Euromoney during a prestigious award ceremony held in London, United Kingdom. This recognition reflects NBC’s commitment to innovation, financial inclusion, and digital excellence in the banking sector.
Pioneering Financial Inclusion through Technology
Addressing journalists in Dar es Salaam, Mr. Elibariki Masuke, Director of Retail Banking at NBC—on behalf of the bank’s Managing Director, Mr. Theobald Sabi—emphasized that the award is a result of the bank’s focused strategy to promote inclusive banking services through its digital platform, NBC Kiganjani.
“Through NBC Kiganjani, we have opened the doors of financial services to all Tanzanians – urban and rural, large and small businesses, smartphone users and those with basic phones. Our USSD and App services ensure that every Tanzanian has the opportunity to participate in the formal economy,” said Mr. Masuke.
He added that the platform's success is rooted in its ability to meet everyday financial needs such as bill payments, money transfers, instant microloans, transport ticket purchases, and more—offering convenience and accessibility to millions.
Innovation, Security, and Local Collaboration
Mr. Masuke also highlighted NBC’s strong digital infrastructure, which leverages technologies like NIDA verification, fingerprint authentication, and two-step verification, enabling seamless customer onboarding and enhanced security.
“Our efforts also support the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 9, which focuses on building resilient infrastructure and fostering innovation,” he noted.
A key factor that impressed the Euromoney Awards panel was NBC’s strategic collaboration with local Fintechs, which has resulted in solutions designed specifically for the Tanzanian market. These partnerships not only foster innovation but also contribute to job creation and the growth of the local tech ecosystem.
Customer-Centric Digital Growth
Mr. David Raymond, NBC’s Head of Marketing, stated that the award is a reflection of market realities.
“Over 70 per cent of all NBC transactions now take place outside physical branches, and digital user growth has surged by 160 per cent. This shows that Tanzanians are more than ready for the digital banking era,” he explained.
One of NBC’s flagship digital products, NBC Wakala Pesa, has played a pivotal role in this growth by simplifying transactions and offering zero fees on money transfers, making banking more accessible to everyday users.
Driving the Future with Fintech
Mr. Ulrik Peter, Head of Digital Alternative Channels and Transformations, reiterated NBC’s commitment to expanding collaboration with local service providers to develop products that respond directly to the needs of Tanzanians.
“By working with Tanzanian Fintechs, we’re able to design banking services that directly support everyday life—from healthcare to education and commerce,” he said.
