Luxembourg, July 1, 2025 – CRDB Bank has officially listed its landmark Green Bond, known as the Kijani Bond, on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange (LuxSE)—marking a historic step forward in green finance for Tanzania and the Sub-Saharan African region.
This listing makes CRDB Bank one of the first commercial banks in Sub-Saharan Africa to issue a locally originated green bond and successfully list it on an international platform. The bond is also now visible on the Luxembourg Green Exchange (LGX), the world’s leading platform dedicated exclusively to sustainable securities.
From Tanzania to the Global Stage
The Kijani Bond was initially launched in Tanzania and drew remarkable investor interest, raising TZS 171.8 billion (approximately USD 65.7 million). Its official admission to the LuxSE Securities Official List (SOL) reflects growing international demand for climate-focused investments from Africa—and Africa’s increasing capacity to deliver them.
The listing ceremony was held at the LuxSE headquarters and attended by key dignitaries, including Mr. Juma Ali Salum, Acting Ambassador of Tanzania to Belgium and Luxembourg; Mr. Abdulmajid Mussa Nsekela, CEO of CRDB Bank; Mr. Arnaud Delestienne, Chief Business Officer and Executive Committee Member of LuxSE; as well as representatives from Orbit Securities Tanzania, the lead selling agents, and executives from the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE), where the bond is also listed.
A Vision for Sustainable Finance
Speaking at the event, Mr. Nsekela described the listing as more than just a financial milestone—it’s the beginning of a stronger partnership between Africa and Europe in funding a greener future.
“The listing of the Kijani Bond is not the end of a process—it’s the start of a bold new journey,” said Nsekela. “We are proud to be pioneers in this space, having raised over USD 65.7 million through our inaugural green bond, which was oversubscribed by more than 429%. Today, we take our sustainability journey to the global stage—not just to access capital, but to elevate the standards of green finance in Africa.”
Financing a Greener Tomorrow
CRDB’s Kijani Bond is the first of its kind in Tanzania and one of the largest green bonds issued in Sub-Saharan Africa to date. The funds raised are already being deployed to finance critical sectors contributing to sustainable development, including:
- Renewable energy
- Climate-resilient agriculture
- Clean cooking energy
- Green building infrastructure
- Sustainable transport
- Clean water and sanitation
- Other climate-aligned projects
LuxSE’s Arnaud Delestienne praised the listing, noting its importance for both global markets and Africa’s sustainable finance leadership.
“We’re pleased to welcome CRDB Bank and its green bond to our exchange. This shows how international capital markets can mobilize funding for essential services and green transformation in Africa,” he said. “It also confirms Africa’s growing role as a partner in global sustainable finance.”
A Moment of National Pride
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Tanzanian government, Mr. Juma Ali Salum emphasized the listing’s significance as a source of national pride and a demonstration of the country’s commitment to climate action under the leadership of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan.
“This is a proud moment for our nation. The Kijani Bond reflects Tanzania’s resolve to play a leading role in inclusive, climate-conscious development,” he said.
CRDB: Leading Africa’s Green Finance Revolution
As an accredited entity with the United Nations Green Climate Fund (UN-GCF), CRDB Bank is solidifying its position as a green finance leader in East and Central Africa. The bond’s listing on LuxSE opens new doors for the bank to access global capital and support Tanzania’s green growth agenda.
Already, the funds are transforming lives across the country—empowering women and youth to start and expand businesses, supporting farmers with climate-smart agriculture, and delivering real impact in underserved communities.
