Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – 12 March 2026: Absa Bank Tanzania, in partnership with Microsoft and Women in Tech, has officially launched the ElevateHer AI Programme in Tanzania. This initiative aims to equip 5,000 young Tanzanian women with practical artificial intelligence (AI) skills and certification, strengthening their participation in the digital economy.
The ElevateHer programme is part of a larger continental initiative designed to train 50,000 women across Africa, providing them with the tools and knowledge to thrive in an AI-driven workforce.
Accessible, Year-Round Learning
Through ElevateHer, participants will have access to free, self-paced online learning pathways that cover:
- AI Fundamentals – Understanding the basics of artificial intelligence.
- AI Applications in Business – How AI is applied in real-world business scenarios.
- Career Development in an AI-Driven Workplace – Preparing for the future of work in an increasingly digital economy.
The programme is available throughout the year, making it accessible to women across Tanzania.
Supporting Women in Tech
Absa Bank Tanzania Chief Operations Officer, Oscar Mwamfwagasi, emphasized the importance of digital skills for young women:
“Artificial intelligence is transforming how economies operate and how people work. Through the ElevateHer AI Programme, Absa Bank Tanzania aims to ensure young Tanzanian women are equipped with the skills and confidence to participate in the digital economy and contribute to innovation and growth.”
This initiative builds on Absa Bank Tanzania’s ongoing efforts to promote women in technology, following last year’s GirlCode Hackathon, which brought together young female innovators to develop technology-driven solutions.
Three Learning Pathways for Growth
The ElevateHer programme offers participants three tailored learning pathways:
- AI for All – Introductory AI knowledge for beginners.
- AI for Business – Practical AI tools and applications for entrepreneurs and business professionals.
- AI for Career Growth – Skills for career advancement in an AI-driven workplace.
These pathways ensure that women can gain practical, job-relevant knowledge and apply AI tools in their professional or entrepreneurial journeys.
A Continental Vision for Women in AI
Tiara Pathon, AI Skills Director for Microsoft Elevate at Microsoft South Africa, highlighted the importance of inclusivity in digital skills:
“Inclusive economic growth in the age of AI requires building skills at scale in emerging markets. For Africa, this means making deliberate investments in women’s digital and AI capabilities. Through our partnership with Absa and Women in Tech, ElevateHer is helping equip women across the continent with practical, job-relevant AI skills that strengthen Africa’s role in the future of work.”
The programme also receives support from Women in Tech Global, an organization committed to empowering five million women and girls in STEM by 2030.
