NMB BANK SETS THE BAR AGAIN FOR GENDER EQUALITY IN THE WORKPLACE

Back-to-Back EDGE Certification Confirms Industry Leadership

NMB Bank is making waves once again—not just in financial performance, but in workplace equality. The bank has secured its second EDGE Assess certification, reinforcing its position as Tanzania’s only EDGE-certified organization and the first financial institution in Africa to achieve and sustain this global standard.

EDGE (Economic Dividends for Gender Equality) is no ordinary badge. It’s the world’s leading assessment and certification system for gender equity in the workplace—evaluating companies on everything from equal pay to leadership development and inclusive culture.

A Culture Rooted in Equality

At a press event held at the bank’s Dar es Salaam headquarters, Acting CEO Filbert Mponzi described the milestone as a powerful validation of NMB’s commitment to fairness and inclusion.

This re-certification is both a testament to our continued efforts and a powerful motivator to keep fostering a fair, inclusive, and empowering workplace for all,” Mponzi said.

At NMB, gender equality is not just a policy—it is a core value.”

From hiring to product design, gender-conscious thinking is deeply embedded in NMB’s strategy. One standout example? The Jasiri Gender Bond, a pioneering financial instrument through which the bank has issued over TZS 70 billion in loans to women-led businesses across Tanzania—benefiting more than 3,200 borrowers.

More Than an HR Initiative—It’s a Business Strategy

Mponzi emphasized that diversity and inclusion are key to innovation, productivity, and employee satisfaction.

These are not just ideals—we treat them as business priorities. That’s why gender equity is woven into our human capital policies and financial offerings.”

And it’s paying off. As of December 31, 2024, NMB employed 5,204 people, with a near-perfect gender balance. Even more impressively, women now make up over 32% of leadership positions, thanks to focused mentorship, career development, and internal promotion strategies.

Recognition from IFC and Global Partners

During the event, Sam Ng’ang’a, East Africa Regional Manager at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), handed over the re-certification certificate to NMB Bank. He praised the bank’s long-standing dedication to creating an equitable workplace.

Through our Anaweza Gender Country Programme, IFC is proud to support NMB in driving dignified, inclusive, and sustainable growth,” he said.

A Legacy of Firsts—and What Comes Next

Back in 2022, NMB made history by becoming the first African bank and third African organization overall to achieve EDGE certification. According to Emmanuel Akonaay, NMB’s Chief Human Resources Officer, this recognition shows that the bank is not only delivering financial results—but also leading on social impact and inclusive growth.

This reinforces our identity as a people-centric institution. Inclusivity guides not only how we treat our people, but also how we serve our customers and communities.”
