DAR ES SALAAM - 27 JUNE 2025
The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has officially launched cargo transportation services using the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), marking a major milestone in modernizing the country’s transport and logistics sector.
According to a statement released Thursday by Fredy Mwanjala, TRC’s Head of Information and Public Relations, the service begins with one cargo train per day.
As per the schedule, the train departs Pugu Station at 4:00 a.m., makes a scheduled stop in Morogoro at 6:00 a.m. to allow passenger trains to pass, and is expected to arrive in Dodoma at 2:05 p.m.
Mwanjala stated that TRC intends to gradually increase the number of trains and wagons in the near future to meet growing cargo demands.
“The Corporation welcomes businesses, institutions, and all stakeholders in the transport sector to take advantage of this modern, fast, and secure service to move their goods,” he said.
The statement noted that the launch of freight services follows the successful rollout of SGR passenger trains, which began operations on June 24, 2024. As of June 2025, more than 2.5 million travelers have used the passenger service.
TRC emphasizes that this transition to cargo transport marks a new chapter in maximizing the full potential of the SGR and contributing meaningfully to national economic development.
