The supplies were presented by NMB Lake Zone Manager, Faraja Ng’ingo, during two separate phases, with the first phase taking place at Mkuyuni Primary School in Chato District.
Among the educational materials donated were 150 desks, 50 chairs and tables, and three computers delivered to Chato District. Additionally, Kaigara and Biija Primary Schools in Muleba District received 200 sheets of iron and wheel chairs to disabled students.
During the donation ceremony, Ng’ingo emphasized the bank’s commitment to giving back to the community as part of its corporate social responsibility, stating that they aim to share a portion of their profits with the communities they serve.
The donations included 150 desks for Itale, Mkuyuni, and Rumasi schools, while Rubambagwe School received 50 chairs and tables, along with three computers for Rumasi School. In the healthcare sector, Chato Regional Hospital received 10 beds with mattresses, 10 wheelchairs for patients, and 10 blood pressure monitoring machines.
“For several years, we have been providing support to the community, particularly in education and health sectors, and during disasters such as floods and fires, we have made contributions as part of our commitment to social responsibility,” stated Ng’ingo.
She assured that NMB Bank will continue collaborating with the government in implementing developmental projects while returning part of its profits to the citizens.
“We remain committed to supporting government efforts in enhancing quality education and improving working conditions. In doing so, we can effectively reach our citizens and clients,” Ng’ingo remarked.
Furthermore, the four wheelchairs provided to the inclusive Kaigara School will help alleviate challenges faced by students lacking mobility aids.
Muleba District Commissioner Abel Nyamahanga, upon receiving the donations, condemned discrimination against children with disabilities and urged more stakeholders to come forward to meet their needs.
“Parents should not hide children with disabilities. This school provides inclusive education, and when children face abuse and discrimination, they may think that is the way of life. They should not be mistreated in any way,” Nyamahanga emphasized.
On behalf of the Chato District Commissioner, District Administrative Secretary Thomas Dime acknowledged that the donated supplies will ease the shortage of desks, expressing gratitude to NMB for being a crucial development partner that has consistently supported the district.
“While we appreciate the support we have received, we still face a challenge of over 26,000 desks. We are working to resolve this issue through the Council’s internal revenue,” Dime stated.
He encouraged the Council to seek solutions to this problem in collaboration with school committees and reminded parents of their responsibility in contributing towards desks.
Verena Nicolous, the headteacher of Mkuyuni Primary School, noted that the school, which has 1,683 students, currently faces a shortage of 164 desks. She expressed that the assistance will serve as a catalyst for enhancing the educational environment at the school.
Some students at Mkuyuni Primary School voiced that the lack of desks forces some to sit on the floor. They believe that the support from NMB will facilitate a more conducive learning environment.
Salum Ramadhan, a seventh-grade student, highlighted that dust makes students dirty, affecting their notebooks, and appealed for additional support to address the desk shortage.
Dr. Osward Lyapa, the acting director of Chato Regional Referral Hospital, discussed the impact of the medical equipment donation, which includes blood pressure machines, beds, and wheelchairs, stating that it will significantly enhance care for patients, particularly in the cardiology clinics held at the hospital.
“Recently, we received funding to complete our ward building, which will allow us to accommodate over 200 patients at once. Thanks to this assistance, there will no longer be patients sleeping on the floor or sharing beds,” Dr. Lyapa stated.
Education Officer for Muleba Ward, Garib Issa, remarked on NMB's consistent support, noting that the bank had also previously provided beds and mattresses to Kaigara School, the only institution offering inclusive education in Muleba District.
In conclusion, the contributions made by NMB Bank highlight their ongoing commitment to community development and support in both education and healthcare sectors.
