GSM FOUNDATION ENHANCES WASTE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES IN SCHOOLS

17 October 2024, Dar es Salaam: In a significant step towards promoting environmental sustainability, the GSM Foundation is pleased to announce the handover of 15 outclass dustbins installed in school premises, 25 in class dustbins and 1 wheelbarrow to Pius Msekwa Primary School. This initiative is part of the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to promote waste management education and practices among the primary school students across the country and supporting the government in implementation of The Mpango Kabambe wa Hifadhi na Usimamizi wa Mazingira (2022-2032) of Tanzania government, known as the National Environmental Master Plan for Strategic-Interventions (NEMPSI).

The handover ceremony, held on 17th of October, marks a continuation of the Foundation’s efforts to equip primary schools with essential waste management tools. In addition to the dustbins provided to Pius Msekwa, the GSM Foundation has previously distributed and installed a total of 35 dustbins, 40 in-class dustbins and 4 wheelbarrows to 2 primary schools around Kinondoni district which benefited to total of 3,144 students in which 1,633 are female and 1,511 are male.

“Our mission extends beyond merely providing dustbins; it is to foster a deep sense of environmental responsibility in our children. By embedding proper waste management practices within the school culture, we aim to empower students not only to adopt these habits themselves but also to become ambassadors of environmental stewardship within their families and communities. Through this, we ensure that the principles of sustainable waste management are passed down, creating lasting positive impacts on society” said Ms. Faith Gugu, Head of the GSM Foundation. This is achieved through distributing and posting the posters with the environmental management messages. Apart from Pius Msekwa Primary school, a total of 150 Posters distributed and posted through various school areas and in this school also, 50 posters will be posted.

This initiative emphasizes the importance of environmental education and encourages students to engage with their communities. An important aspect of this program is the potential economic benefit it brings to families. By promoting proper waste segregation, the communities around schools can sell recyclable waste, providing an additional source of income while reducing litter in their neighbourhoods.

“We believe that every small step counts,” Faith added. “By working together, we can create lasting change in our communities.”

The GSM Foundation is committed to conducting inclusive change on proper waste management projects to other schools across the country, with the plan conducting handover to 1 school monthly up to June, 2025.
