UGANDAN MINERS LEARN INNOVATIVE TECH AT GEITA EXPO

Emmanuel Njabugeni, Ungerground, Long-Term Planning Engineer (left), explains to mining experts from the Uganda Ministry of Mines how GGML utilises multiple technologies in its open-pit and underground mining operations.

This year's Geita Mining Technology & Exhibition has drawn a diverse range of stakeholders, including officials from the Ministry of Mines of the Government of Uganda. They had the opportunity to learn how Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) employs modern technology in its underground and open pit mining operations.

The visting Ugandans, headed by Morris Muheirwe Tabaaro, Inspector of Mines in the Directorate of Geological Survey and Mines for Eastern Uganda, visited the GGML booth at the ongoing sixth exhibition in EPZ grounds in Bombambili, Geita, Tanzania.

Tabaaro explained that their visit was not only to share experiences but also to gain knowledge about the company's methods for mineral research and mining, both in open pit and underground ways.

Furthermore, expounding on the exposure provided, GGML's Emmanuel Njabugeni Engineer Underground, Long-Term Planning stated that this initiative demonstrates Tanzania's leadership in mining practices, following numerous well-established guidelines and even influencing the nation.

Njabugeni, with over 15 years of experience in mining activities, explained that during the exhibition they educated visitors, small miners and participants on modern technologies that help reduce mining costs and protect the environment. "We have made significant progress in technology, including the Studio UG software for underground mining, as well as other technologies that we demonstrated to our Ugandan colleagues, highlighting the benefits they can reap.

"Our colleagues from Uganda have the opportunity to learn a lot from us here in Tanzania, particularly from GGML – the largest gold mine not only in Tanzania but in East and Central Africa.

"GGML is at the forefront of technology and environmental conservation, which is why I have instructed our Ugandan peers on how these practices are implemented in mining while preserving the environment. This approach has greatly benefited us, as well as the wider community," he concluded.

"I clarified that we employ research companies in Geita. For example at GGML, we rely on the services of Capital Mining Services to provide us with data which determines whether a profit or loss will be made. The price of gold, the equipment and the cost of human resources, as well as expenses like hole filling and environmental safety, all factor into this analysis."

This move comes at a time when the Tanzanian Government is strengthening its efforts to implement the Vision 2030, initiated by the Minister of Minerals, Athony Mavunde, which aims to ensure that minerals are the wealth and livelihood of Tanzanians.
