WHAT TANZANIA NEEDS TO DO TO PROMPT CREATIVITY AND BOOST PRODUCTIVITY IN TECHNOLOGY
In recent years, measures have been taken by the government and private companies alike to help strengthen the Tanzanian economy. Many of these efforts form part of the country’s vision to become a middle-income, semi-industrialised economy by 2025.
It is well known that this ambition – which was designed nearly twenty years ago – is high on the government’s agenda.
The Vision sets out a roadmap of goals that the country wants to deliver by 2025. One of the Vision’s key goals is to develop a strong and competitive economy with sustained growth.
Investing in the country’s infrastructure forms a key part in helping reach this vision. For example, there has been much discussion recently regarding the roll-out of the standard-gauge railway and the upgrade to the country’s road network.
Investment in hard infrastructure will serve as an important tool for helping the country boost its productivity and the speed at which goods can be delivered.
Elsewhere, it is also becoming increasingly clear that digital connectivity is also an important tool for helping to boost the economy. To that end, it was recently reported that over 520,000 people in 45 villages will be connected to the country’s telecommunication infrastructure in the near future.
The scale of this project is significant and shows that the country’s telecom sector and government are committed to helping the country open a new digital chapter.
This is, of course, positive news as digital connectivity provides a way to access life changing services. For example, Tigo Tanzania has developed a number of valuable services such as mobile money and m-health services, which have provided banking and health services to those who previously were excluded or struggled to gain access.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY HAS A KEY ROLE TO PLAY IN HOW TANZANIA DEVELOPS
Within the past five years, the rate of mobile phone penetration in the sub-Saharan region has increased at an exponential rate.
According to the GSMA – the international telecoms trade body – by the end of 2018, the number of mobile phone users within the region had increased by over 20 million from the year before.
Estimates suggest that overall mobile phone penetration is set to increase even further, with an additional 167 million people expected to subscribe to mobile services by 2025.
Tanzania is no exception: the latest figures from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority indicate that there were almost 49 million mobile telecom subscribers in the country at the end of 2019.
Looking to the future, current estimates suggest that between 2018 and 2025, Tanzania will see 10 million new mobile phone subscribers.
This predicted increase in the adoption of mobile phones is possible largely due to the country’s strong telecommunications sector. It also highlights people’s willingness to embrace new technology and to open a new chapter in Tanzania’s digital evolution.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY IS REVOLUTIONIZING TANZANIA’S ECONOMY
In recent years, the growth and adoption of digital technology has presented many countries with several benefits and significant opportunities. The growth of m-health is a prime example of this. For numerous countries, m-health has become an important tool in how healthcare is delivered. From allowing people to research their symptoms, to helping hospitals to store medical records, m-health is having a clear and positive impact for patients and practitioners alike.
In Tanzania, m-health has played an important role in supporting people living with various illnesses, by reminding them to make medical appointments or helping answer questions without the need for a physical consultation with a doctor.
Recently, m-health took a further step forward when Aga Khan University launched a mobile app to help people to evaluate possible COVID-19 symptoms. Applications such as these demonstrate the important role that m-health can play in overcoming health related challenges.
As m-health has become a much-discussed topic of late, it is important to remember that Tanzania’s telecoms sector has played a key part in the development of the country’s m-health services for a number of years now.
