Female employees can now look forward to a 20-week paid maternity leave. This translates to 140 calendar days or five months of maternity leave, excluding annual leave.
The Bank’s Head of Human Resources, Mr. Siaophoro Kishimbo, said that the adjustment is part of the Bank’s focus to create and sustain an environment that enables its employees and their families to succeed.
“As a part of the Bank’s family-friendly culture, we have increased fully-paid maternity leave for our female employees to 20 calendar weeks, while male employees will start enjoying a 14 days or two calendar weeks’ paternity leave.” Mr. Kishimbo said.
The Bank had been offering a 12 weeks, or three months, maternity leave and a 3 days’ paternity leave, in accordance with the country’s Labour Laws. The Bank’s new policy, therefore, surpasses the country’s Labour Laws requirements by 8 weeks for its female employees, and by 11 days for its male employees.
On the other hand, the Bank’s new policy has also considered Adoptive mothers whose maternity leave will increase from two calendar weeks to 90 calendar days, equivalent to three months, for mothers who adopt children aged between 0-3 months. Additionally, mothers who adopt children aged 4 months and above will be entitled to a maternity leave of 30 calendar days which are equivalent to one month.
Adoptive fathers will also be entitled to a 14 days or two calendar weeks’ paternity leave, which is an increase of 11 days.
“As we mark our Centenary Anniversary in Tanzania we believe that the new policy will further support the creation of a stronger and healthier future generation as our nursing mothers will have a longer period of uninterrupted breastfeeding for their babies. This is also in line with the recent call by the Minister of Health, Community Development, Gender, Seniors and Children, when Tanzania joined the World in marking the World Breastfeeding Week which was marked at the beginning of this month. The new Parental Leave Scheme is extended to all employees of the Bank, regardless of length of service.” Mr. Kishimbo said.
The Bank’s internal studies carried out show that staff feel more motivated at work when they receive better support in the integration of their professional and personal lives.
Women are key contributors to the Bank’s business. 40 per cent of the Bank’s leadership team in Tanzania are women, and for the past three years, females comprise 52 per cent of the workforce in Tanzania.

We believe that fostering and building on a culture to help our people balance their personal and professional commitments will deliver strong benefits for both the Bank and our employees.
