Resumption of Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) flights to Mwanza will stimulate and promote tourism in the Lake Zone and enhance the sector’s contributions to the economy, Mwanza Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr John Mongela, has said.
Mr Mongela said that the resumption of ATCL flights to Mwanza will unlock tourism potentials in the region to increase individual earnings and contributions to economic growth. Mr Elibariki Mmari, a businessman based in Mwanza said that Air flights to Mwanza would promote economic activities in the city and the entire Lake Zone regions.
He said the flights would also help to promote the Lake Zone as key tourist destination and therefore boost tourist activities and help local tourism companies to compete for markets in the East African community (EAC).
Mmari who is also Tanzania chamber of commerce, Industries and Agriculture (TCCIA) Mwanza Regional Chairman said that in order to fulfil the slogan of Mwanza to be EAC trade hub, ATCL must pull its socks to make sure it increases air routes to Mwanza and the entire Lake zone.
One of a passenger from Dar es Salaam who was on the new ATCL aircraft that landed in Mwanza over the weekend, Mr Frank Kisengo, said that flights to Mwanza would promote domestic tourism and economy as a whole in the area and contribute to the growth of the region’s GDP.
“We have a lot of domestic tourism attractions that would attract tourists, but due to lack of strong advertisement, this hampers tourism destinations in the Lake Zone regions,” said Mr Kisengo.
He said that for the time being the region has to be ready to compete on Air transport in the region with Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania as well as the rest in EAC in terms of tourism industry in order to promote economy.
The ATCL Board Chairman, Eng Emmanuel Koroso, said that ATCL has determined to promote domestic tourism destinations and make Mwanza Region an EAC tourism hub where tourists will visit Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater easily through Mwanza Airport.
The plan, according to the president, is designed to transform Mwanza Region’s infrastructure and to spur development through tourism industry.
