HALOTEL LAUNCH TELECOMMUNICATIONS NETWORK WITH A VISION TO PROVIDE EVERY TANZANIAN WITH A MOBILE PHONE

Dar es Salaam, 15 October 2015 – Halotel today announced the launch of 2G and 3G mobile and internet services in Tanzania.

Recognized as the “Best Investment Project 2014 in East, Central and West Africa Region” at the 5th Annual Investment Meeting (AIM) held in Dubai, UAE, Halotel is expected to make telecom services accessible to every population of Tanzania through its strong and advanced technology network throughout the country.

Besides 2G service for voice call and message, Halotel will bring competitively-priced 3G connectivity (of speeds up to 45 mbps) to the most remote areas of the country, empowering not just urban but rural areas through connectivity, and offering mobile services as a basic commodity.

“Halotel’s vision is to provide every Tanzanian with a mobile phone and bring communication and information technology to every corner of life. We believe that when telecommunications services are accessible to everyone, and become a part of everyday life, they can be a driving force contributing to socio-economic development for the country as a whole” said Nguyen Thanh Quang, General Director of Halotel.

With an initial investment of USD 736 million, after constructing and installing network infrastructure in just one year, Viettel’s operations in Tanzania have expanded services to all 26 provinces in the country across rural and urban areas, and created over 2,000 direct and 20,000 indirect jobs. With a strong infrastructure comprising 18,000 km of optical cable and more than 2.500 base transceivers. 1500 villages are now connected for the first time.

Halotel will also provide free internet connectivity to 450 public schools over the next three years. Viettel has also provided optical cable to 150 committees, 150 public hospitals, 150 police stations and 65 post offices within the first half of the year.

1. Currently Tanzania has about five telecommunication companies offering their services with a very competitive market share; as a new company, what would be your strategy to win a reasonable market share within a short period of time

- Halotel’s vision is to provide every Tanzanian with a mobile phone and bring communication and information technology to every corner of life. We believe that when telecommunications services are accessible to everyone, and become a part of everyday life, they can be a driving force contributing to socio-economic development for the country as a whole.

2. Why Tanzania? Where will you be in terms of coverage? Are there any plans to expand to other East African counties? Where?

- The world finds Tanzania an attractive tourism destination; we find great potential in transport infrastructure development for tourism.

The world is impressed by Tanzania’s nature landscapes; we are impressed by Tanzanian people’s efforts to build up the country.

The world praises Tanzania as “Switzerland” of Africa; we see the vision of the country’s development plan.

One of the significant potentials we see in Tanzania is telecommunication. With the transmission network and the effective management, Tanzania has become a competitive market which is very beneficial for Tanzanian people.

3. For years now, customers of the four telecommunications companies have been enjoying the cutting-age services, how unique will you be? What are the unique product that you intent to offer in the East African country?

- We provide services running on a high speed and stable network. Within one year, Halotel has set up a network of 18,000 kilometers of optic cable and 2,500 of 2G-3G base stations (BTS). Noticeably, Halotel has brought broad-band service to 1,500 villages which were never connected before. We provide not only mobile service, but also other value-added services (VAS) that customers can enjoy even without having smartphones.

- We will be among the top 3 of the biggest telecom operators in Tanzania.
