NMB Bank has reiterated its commitment to digital innovation as a key driver of financial inclusion in Tanzania. Through its mobile platform, NMB Mkononi, the bank is transforming how millions of Tanzanians access financial services — quickly, securely, and without the need to visit a branch.
Speaking during the 49th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), NMB’s Senior Manager for Digital Sales, Mr. Hezbon Mpate, highlighted that over 4.7 million customers now use the NMB Mkononi app. In 2024 alone, 96% of transactions were processed digitally, reflecting a 16% year-on-year growth.
“Our aim is to eliminate the barriers of time and distance. With NMB Mkononi, we’re ensuring banking services are truly accessible to all,” said Mpate.
Enhancements for Greater Access & Security
To further support customer needs, NMB has:
- Upgraded biometric login with fingerprint authentication.
- Increased daily limits from TZS 5 million to TZS 30 million for higher-value transactions via MshikoFasta.
- Expanded instant micro-loans, allowing users to borrow up to TZS 1 million in under 10 minutes, collateral-free.
Since 2022, MshikoFasta has disbursed over 3 million loans, benefitting nearly 1 million Tanzanians, including food vendors, small traders (wamachinga), and service providers.
Embracing AI for Efficiency
NMB has also launched an AI-powered chatbot, NMB Jirani, available on WhatsApp, the bank’s website, and social media. The bot currently handles 78% of customer queries in real-time and has reduced customer care traffic by 22%.
Digital Momentum Nationwide
Recent data from the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) shows that 72% of adults in Tanzania now use digital financial services, with over 38 million mobile users and monthly transactions exceeding TZS 14 trillion.
“We’re focused on scaling NMB Mkononi into an inclusive, secure, and impactful digital platform,” Mpate emphasized.
