Dar es Salaam. A new firm that will end Swissport’s ground handling monopoly at the Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) is yet to be named despite authority’s recent promises.
The Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) promised in early November, 2014 that the new operator would be named on November 14.
TAA director general Suleiman Suleiman toldThe Citizen on sidelines of a two-day meeting for airport managers in November that the authority’s tender to pick the second ground hander had been floated and that the evaluation process was conducted.
“We announced the tender and eight bidders participated. However, only seven returned the tender document…..the winner has already been identified….we are currently following certain procedures and I expect to announce the winner before 14th of November,” he said.
Until yesterday, TAA maintained that procedures to announce the winner were still in progress.
“What I can confirm to you today is that we are still on procedures to announce the winner…I can’t tell exactly when but it should be any time soon,” TAA corporate legal secretary Ramadhani Maleta told The Citizen yesterday.
Mr Suleiman said the need for a second ground handler at Tanzania’s primier airport was necessitated by increased number of passengers and flights that come with increased cargo to Tanzania via the airport. “Swissport Tanzania used to be the only ground handler because there was no much business at the airport as flights were few and passengers were not as many as they are today.” he said in November, 2014.
