East African Community Secretariat, Arusha, 13 October 2014: The 10th Ordinary Meeting of the EAC Sectoral Council of Ministers responsible for Health is underway at the EAC headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.
The 13 – 17 October meeting is being conducted through sessions of Senior Officials; the Co-ordination Committee (Permanent/Principal Secretaries); and the Ministerial session.
The Sectoral Council meeting will over the five-day period review the implementation of previous decisions of the EAC Sectoral Council on Health and the EAC Council of Ministers as well as a report of the 19th Ordinary Meeting of the EAC Sectoral Committee on Health held from 8th to 12th September 2014.
Speaking during the official opening, the Chairperson of the Senior Officials session Mr. Ibrahim Maalim from the Ministry of Health Kenya, called upon the participants to remain focused and committed to the common goal of securing a better healthier future for the people of the region through regional collaboration and integration in health.
On his part EAC Principal Health Officer Dr Stanley Sonoiya reiterated the need for the Partner States to have a common vision of fostering EAC integration, where good health is key for regional integration and development. He pointed out that for speedy development to occur, we need to have healthy East Africans to contribute and benefit from the EAC integration programmes.
The East African Community Headquarters will also host the EAC-Africa Medicines Regulatory Harmonization Round Table Donors Conference on Friday 17th October 2014. The Conference will be co-chaired by Hon. James W. Macharia, Cabinet Secretary for Health of the Republic of Kenya and Chairperson of the EAC Sectoral Council of Minister of Health as well as Mr. Dan Hartman, Director of integrated Development (Global Health) from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, USA.
