As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility drive to promote capacity development amongst the young generation in Tanzania, Exim Bank Tanzania, which believes that innovation is life, has set up a computer lab at Kilakala Primary School in Temeke District in Dar es Salaam region.

Speaking during the handover ceremony held yesterday at the school, Exim Bank Tanzania Temeke Branch Manager Ms. Joyce Sinamtwa said that the donation of fully installed computers, underlines Exim Bank’s firm commitment to promoting capacity development among Tanzanians by investing in human capital.

She said, “In addition to the library that was setup last year, this computer lab will also help to bring development close to these children and demonstrates our commitment to invest in the future leaders of this nation. Some of these pupils have a high Intelligent Quotient but lack the opportunity to access such educational facilities. Exim Bank Tanzania decided to enhance their potential as a way of contributing to the future of these pupils hence equipping them for the challenges ahead.”

Ms. Sinamtwa said that the management of Exim Bank believes that by setting up a modern computer lab at a public school, many pupils will be able to use this opportunity in developing their skills thus becoming innovative in their day to-day lives.
She mentioned that since the bank adopted Kilakala Primary School in August 2012 the school has been going through gradual transformation through support given by the bank, which includes renovation of infrastructure, donation of desks, books and other academic materials.

The head teacher of Kilakala Primary School Mr. Abdul Kuratasa said, “The assumption that children in public schools cannot use computers in their studies will change now because of this innovative project. It will help in grooming our children to become good in the Science and Technology sector as well as keeping up with the current changes in the world. Now they will also have an opportunity to compete favourably with pupils from private schools. We thank Exim Bank Tanzania for this investment in the children.”

Mr. Kuratasa said the project will have a great effect on these children, adding that prior to the installation of the lab, some pupils did not know what a computer looks like, let alone a fully installed computer lab.

“Kilakala pupils will now have the opportunity to use computers with the help of teachers and IT experts. We appreciate and see ourselves as a lucky school to have this project,” he said.

Commenting on the impact of the computer lab and the earlier stocked library Nasra Abeid, a Kilakala class seven pupil said, “This is an opportunity we had longed for. We can now be sure of using a computer before going to secondary school, which is a dream come true. We are grateful.”
