  • A digital platform facilitating easy access to affordable insurance services in partnership with Britam
  • Over 13 million M-PESA customers to access Motor Insurance through their phones
  • Other Insurance service categories to added into the portfolio
12th April 2021, Dar es Salaam - Tanzania’s leading Technology and Communication Company, Vodacom Tanzania has announced the launch of ‘VodaBima’ – a digital service that aims at giving customers access to insurance services at their fingertips thus catalyzing the uptake of insurance services among Tanzanians by digitizing the service.

According to Finscope report 2013, Insurance uptake in Tanzania is at 13.0% having doubled from 6.8% in 2009. Despite the double digit growth, Insurance is still one of least utilized financial services in Tanzania. Different reasons are cited for the low numbers including a low awareness, mistrust of the service and bottlenecks to access the services. As a technology company with a vision to digitize Tanzania and change lives through technology, Vodacom is keen to bridge this gap by offering a digital solution that will ease access to Insurance products.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam, M-Pesa Director, Epimack Mbeteni said that VodaBima is a new addition to M-Pesa portfolio of products and services all aimed at making digital inclusion in Tanzania a reality.

“For 13 years now, Vodacom M-Pesa has been a key catalyst in growth of financial inclusion in the country and we are always looking into new ways of pushing for an inclusive digital economy. Vodacom aims to bridge the gap of access to insurance services by offering a digital solution that will cut down costs and increase access to Insurance products. VodaBima gives customers the option of saving up for Insurance at no cost in their VodaBima wallet throughout the year. VodaBima platform will send out push notifications and SMS alerts when your vehicle Insurance is about to expire

FLIPFLOPI - THE WORLD’S FIRST RECYCLED PLASTIC SAILING DHOW MOVES FROM SOURCE TO THE SEA AS IT EXPANDS THE PLASTIC POLLUTION CAMPAIGN ACROSS EAST AFRICA

14th April 2021 - The world’s first recycled plastic sailing dhow, ‘The Flipflopi’ has just completed its historic voyage circumnavigating Lake Victoria in its East African campaign to tackle plastic pollution and is now on its way to Tanzania’s capital city, Dar es Salaam.

In a 4-week expedition that saw the dhow travel 850km from Kisumu Kenya, to Uganda and finally to Mwanza, Tanzania, the Flipflopi campaign brought together key stakeholders who hold the keys to turning the tide on plastic – from school children, to artists and activists, to country leaders and governments.

The Flipflopi is now charting a new course as it travels downstream from the source to the sea, heading to Dar es Salaam for the final leg on this historic journey. From Dar es Salaam, The Flipflopi will sail north from Tanzania to her home in Lamu, Kenya, where the boat has not returned since she left over 2 years ago.

The Lake Victoria expedition brought national and regional attention to the plastic problem affecting lakeshore communities, and showcased alternate solutions to waste-plastic through circular economy and waste management activities, mobilising hundreds of people at events along the way and paving the way for new commitments and policy-change around single-use plastic in the region.

LONG-AWAITED $15 BILLION EAST AFRICAN OIL PIPELINE DEAL SIGNED IN KAMPALA

Fifteen years after discovering commercially-viable crude oil deposits, Uganda begins its final journey to production.

Fifteen years after discovering commercially-viable crude oil deposits, Uganda begins its final journey to production with the signing on Sunday of a landmark deal with Tanzania and French oil company Total.

The deal, which is expected to unlock upwards of $15 billion in investments, was signed in Kampala. President Yoweri Museveni led the Uganda delegation while Total chairman and chief executive Patrick Pouyanne led the French company’s team, The EastAfrican has learnt.

A key element of the project is the crude oil export pipeline to run from Uganda to the Indian Ocean at Tanga and Tanzania President Samia Suluhu travelled to Kampala in her first foreign trip as head of state to sign the tripartite agreement on behalf of her country.

Signing of the deal was earlier scheduled for March 22 in Kampala but was postponed following the death of Tanzania's President John Pombe Magufuli, who was a key driving force behind the pipeline.

A deal for the $3.5 billion East African Crude Oil Pipeline (Eacop) is a strategic win for Tanzania which will earn $12.7 off each barrel of oil transported through it.

Longest heated pipeline

At peak production, the 1,445-kilometre heated pipeline which starts in Hoima in the Albertine Graben, western Uganda, and ends at Tanga Port in Tanzania, will transport 216,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Due to the waxy nature of Uganda’s oil, it will be one of the longest heated crude oil export pipelines in the world.

“Because of the pipeline, on each barrel, Uganda will lose $12.7 because of paying for the pipeline. But why don’t we concentrate on the refinery, supply Uganda and the interior part of East Africa,” President Museveni said in a TV interview in Kampala last year.

The long-awaited agreement allows Uganda to move ahead with a project that has been plagued by delays for more than a decade since the confirmation of commercial deposits.

The country’s oil deposits are estimated to have reduced in value from $61 billion in 2013 to $18 billion in 2018 due to a fall of crude oil prices on the world market, according to the Climate Policy Initiative, a UK-based research firm.

Mr Dewji, popularly known by his admirers as Mo and who is chief executive officer for Mohammed Enterprises Tanzania Limited (MeTL), will sit on President Ramaphosa’s investment advisory council, for a period a three years.

A statement, released yesterday by MeTL, said Mo and his colleagues on President Ramaphosa’s investment advisory council, will be responsible for the development and implementation of strategies and programs to attract and retain domestic and foreign direct investment to the Republic of South Africa.

TANZANIA COMMUNICATIONS REGULATOR SUSPENDS TELECOM FIRMS' NEW DATA CHARGES

Dar es Salaam - The government on Friday April 2, 2021 suspended telecommunication firms’ new data bundles after they (the bundles) had raised a public uproar.

Earlier on Friday, all telecommunication firms had revised their bundles for voice calls, data and short messaging service as they sought to align them with new regulations as published by Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA).

In the process however, they (telcos) significantly raised data bundles. This raised a public uproar as subscribers vehemently opposed the new charges, with some describing them as ‘outrageous’ via social media platforms.

In response to the uproar, the government issued a statement later in the day, announcing the suspension of the new data charges until the matter gets resolved.

“The government has directed telcos to suspend the new prices for data bundles for a while as the issue is being sorted out,” the head of corporate communications at TCRA, Mr Semu Mwakyanjala, told The Citizen.

The message was followed by a statement from the regulator, saying the suspension of data bundles was meant to give room for further discussions.

“TCRA is temporarily suspending the new data bundles so as to give room for service providers to conduct a detailed analysis that should culminate into new tariffs that effectively put into consideration the interests of consumers,” the statement reads.

PRESIDENT SAMIA: STOP FRUSTRATING TAXPAYERS, EXPAND TAX BASE

President Samia Suluhu Hassan during the swearing in of the newly appointed Ministers at State House on April 1.

Dodoma - Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has told the taxman through the Ministry of Finance and Planning to stop frustrating businesses and instead look for new ways how to expand the tax base.

“You have been given a threshold of Sh 2 trillion per month, go and expand the tax base and come up with new tax payers,” said the President.

The President was speaking at the swearing in of the newly appointed Chief Secretary, Ministers and their Deputies at State House in Dodoma.

According to the President the prevailing trend is killing tax payers instead of making the environment conducive for doing business.

“You use a lot of force in collection of taxes, now those whom you impose heavy taxes upon, you take away their tools of work, close their bank accounts, forcefully take money from accounts, just because the law allows you to do so, once this happens most business people opt to close shop and go to other countries,” said President.

She added: This reduces the number of tax payers, I therefore urge you to go out there and expand the tax base plus supervising all the issues that frustrate people from paying taxes.

EQUITY OVERTAKES KCB AS THE MOST PROFITABLE BANK

NAIROBI - Equity Bank has overtaken KCB Group as Kenya’s most profitable lender on back of aggressive expansion of foreign subsidiaries in a year when earnings plunged due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Equity Bank net profit dropped 11 per cent to Sh19.7 billion, racing ahead of KCB whose earnings fell 22 per cent to Sh19.6 billion with the performance of the foreign subsidiaries setting the two rivals apart.

KCB Group subsidiaries brought in Sh3.6 billion in net profits, which was has half the Sh7.2 billion that Equity received from its operations outside Kenya.

The growth of Equity profits from the foreign subsidiaries was on the back of its acquisition of Congo’s Banqué Commerciale du Congo in August, a deal that helped make it the first Kenyan banks to grow balance sheet beyond Sh1 trillion.

“Profit after tax from outside Kenya contributed to 28 per cent of our bottom line from 18 per cent the previous year as we increased market share and the merger in DRC propelled the group from position 4 to position 2 in that market,” said James Mwangi Equity Group CEO.
